I have close to no money right now, but I plan on buying one or two of these films. But I can't decide which one I should grab. Any recommendations?

- Throne of Blood
- Rashomon
- Following
- Thief
The two Kurosawas, definitely.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), John Foxx, Japan, Tangerine Dream, XTC, etc. I love me some late 1970s/early 1980s synth pop, and this soundtrack excels as such.

I wrote a long User Review for Identification of a Woman a few months back when I saw the Criterion Blu-ray, because I was quite taken with the film.

I love the visuals throughout the movie...

Oh yes, the soundtrack definitely played a big role for the film, in my opinion. I also love those visuals as well. Antonioni is great at framing shots.

R.I.P. Vera Chytilova, one of the key figures of Czech New Wave cinema. I only saw Daisies a week ago and as I said then, amazing film. I'd love to see more of her films made available.

just finished This Happy Breed from the David Lean set... the second half of the film really won me over. Not that it is entirely essential to enjoying the film, but I wish I knew more about British history as even the trailer suggests "a family living against the backdrop of English history" (or something to that effect.) I wasn't expecting too much from it as I was disappointed with In Which We Serve and while I enjoyed Brief Encounter, it didn't quite shoot its way up my list of all time favorite films.

Anyway, the acting was really good and the writing (courtesy of Noel Coward) was top notch. It is a wonderful looking transfer, too. Beautiful color. Flawless, actually.

I really fell in love with How Green Was My Valley today. I watched half of it last night before turning in. The wedding scene made me happier than some of my favorite scenes of all. It's such a beautiful looking movie too!

Much recommend.

My wife and I hated it.

Loved the cinematography and Bruce Dern was great, everything else, not so much.

I watched it today for the first time and I honestly enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I'm a huge fan of Antonioni's trilogy, but I think IOAW was a pretty solid film for one of his later works.
I loved the soundtrack for this film. OMD was awesome. It's a totally 80s new wave soundtrack. The music kind of works with the movie too believe it or not.

I saw Nebraska in the movie theater when it was still playing months ago. Bruce Dern was solid. Honestly, its not my favorite Payne film though. I still prefer his older films such as Sideways and About Schmidt. Nebraska was just a tad too slow for my tastes.

I bought How Green Was My Valley a couple months ago, but still haven't watched it. I guess that I should remedy this soon.

I did watch The Grapes of Wrath a couple weeks ago, since I finished the Steinbeck novel earlier this winter. Such a great film...

good to know as I, too, have it sitting on my shelf as a blind buy. I hemmed and hawed (do ppl still say that? ) about whether or not to buy it... I watched the first minute and half on youtube and was sold on it. Looking forward to seeing it. I sampled a minute or two of the blu-ray when it came in and the PQ is indeed stunning.

I think About Schmidt would make for a perfect Criterion Blu-ray release, don't you?

What are the chances of This Is Spinal Tap becoming a future Criterion release? They had it as a dvd before and I want to own it on blu-ray but I'd rather wait if a Criterion release is possible.

Sideways is my favorite Payne film. The Descendents is excellent, too. Shailene Woodley is going places.

The Sideways blu-ray features a very entertaining commentary with Giamatti and Haden Church. They certainly didn't mail it in!

It's not out of the realm of possibility. They released it on DVD (and LD before that), but lost the rights to it along with some other films that MGM/UA decided that they didn't want to license anymore (including Robocop and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. There have certainly been rumors that Criterion might reacquire Robocop, so there's that. But I haven't heard any whisperings of their getting This Is Spinal Tap back, certainly not in the foreseeable future.
