I agree but I would watch Bottle Rocket after watching Rushmore. Rushmore and/or The Royal Tenenbaums is a good entry point to his style than Bottle Rocket which would throw someone off to his other works if they watched BR first.

Just blind bought The Great Beauty on Blu-ray. What a total piece of crap film. A good dance opening is followed by a missing story. Good camerawork but style over substance should not have been awarded at the Oscars.

I had to stop the film after 40 minutes since it wasn't going anywhere.

Such a crummy film, Im giving this Blu-ray away for free. Just pay me 6 dollars for the shipping. First one to PM me, and i'll give you more details.

God what a bad film.

I almost broke down and bought the dvd of Le Samourai this week. I assumed if I did they would announce the blu-ray upgrade of it with the next announcement...

BUT I am waiting just another month just to make sure. So if it's not announced this week I'll buy it and ensure it will be a July release.

The existing blu ray is worth buying a region free player for, it's outstanding. Edit: Picnic at Hanging Rock that is

A quick Criterion question regarding the search function at the top of the page.

I have a list, a long list, of Criterions I wish to own. I want to be able to compare releases from other distributors such as MOC etc as well as price check.

I have done a quick test with The Ballad of Narayama, a Criterion & MOC release yet I only got details for the Criterion. I have the setting on "all countries" so I am a little lost as to why MOC did not show in the results.

Any suggestions as to how I can do a search to bring up all worldwide releases of a film ?

Thanks

If you have the all countries (globe icon) selected, typing the name of the title brings a drop down menu up with each country release of the title. MoC will usually be 3rd down, with British flag. Hope this helps. Some uk releases are in the database but stuff like features aren't shown; I'd usually just pull up the eureka/criterions sites to directly compare.

It is fairly easy to meet, snap a pic with, or get an autograph from any of the guests at EbertFest. In the early years, I met and took a pic w/ Billy Crudup, Mark Borchardt (from American Movie), and my buddy took a pic w/ David Warner (Tron, Titanic, among other things.) I didn't bother (in hindsight I should have) when David Gordon Green was there. Also saw Robert Forster and Donald O'Conner was there for a screening of Singing In The Rain before he died. Talk about a religious experience - especially since it was the first time seeing that movie for me. And of course, I met Ebert a few times as he was extremely accessible and willing to talk to anybody provided he had the time to spare.

I saw in your blog, Sammy, that you were at EbertFest. Glad that you have been able to experience it. I haven't been to any other festivals, so I can't really compare, but the vibe at EbertFest is a reason for living, man. Some of the happiest memories of my life have been made down there while at that festival and I saw some great films that I would otherwise never came across. Also, saw Criterion titles El Norte, 3 Women, and George Washington down there.

Spike Lee is going to be there this year, or as I told me wife over the IM, "Spike flippin' (used the more colorful f word, truthfully) Lee!" I don't think I'll get there, however, until Saturday. Will have to see.

If you wait down on the main floor afterwards, you'll be able to meet whoever is there. They come out on the door to the left of the screen. It's how I met Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, Jeff Nichols, etc.

I don't have any other festivals to compare it to, either, but I love it. The theater is one of the best I've ever been to (the renovations looked great), and the snacks are about as reasonable as it gets. My only complaint is that the bathroom lines are always long.

I'm still waiting for the full festival line-up before I commit. I've been there two years in a row, though, and I really don't want to skip it this year. I imagine Life Itself will hit hard in that kind of environment. Just hoping they announce something that really deserves to be seen on that screen, like last year's Days of Heaven.

as you can see, I don't think people will agree on a starting point or a favorite film from him, which is interesting because for most filmmakers there is usually a fairly clear consensus favorite (or two). Anyone who reads this thread knows that I am not a fan, but I did enjoy his first few films. Might as well take it chronologically. another poster just said that he got a bit too quirky w/ The Life Aquatic. That is where he lost me, but he still has tons of fans, so there's no telling what you'll enjoy.

I have opened the MOC catalogue and checked a few others. Seems I initially picked the only film they both have released that does not show The few others I've checked show both Criterion & MOC.

Cheers for the reply

On opening night in the past they have shown 2001, The Right Stuff, and Lawrence of Arabia... off the top of my head that is all I can recall. They usually reserve the first night for the 'must see on big screen' film. I'm sure they'll choose something good. Apparently, Ebert left behind a list of films that the program directors should try to obtain for future festivals, so its nice knowing that he still is (somewhat) in charge of picking stuff.

There has also been live orchestra accompaniment for The General, Nosferatu, and Metropolis in the past, too, so they might have something like that which would definitely be worthwhile.

You and I are of a similar mind I think, though I seem to like him more. Rushmore is actually one of my all-time favorite films, and I love both Bottle Rocket and Royal Tenenbaums. But every film post-RT seemed like he was forcing his quirky heightened style that he "perfected" in RT.

I also feel like Life Aquatic was were he started to fall off for me (coincidence that this is the first film of his that Owen Wilson didn't co-write?). Though I continue to watch and enjoy parts of each films, they feel like shells compared to his first 3. But I keep buying them because Criterion does a fab job with the releases and I am am GD completist when it comes to certain artists.

I will say that I absolutely love the score of Life Aquatic though. Seu Jorge's acoustic Portuguese David Bowie covers are great.

That was probably a bad title to use as a test since they are two different films.

Criterion released the 1958 film directed by Keisuke Kinoshita, MOC released the 1983 film directed by Shohei Imamura.

With Arrows announcement of Sisters, anyone think Criterion might go into their vaults to upgrade their edition of Sisters ? Do they still own the rights to the film ?
