It is always interesting in comparing Tarkovsky's Solaris with Soderbergh's, which the latter contains Cliff Martinez's film score masterpiece.

With Godard, I would start with Vivre Sa Vie or Bande à parte which are, in my opinion, more accessible. Breathless and Pierrot Le Fou would be the next two to view, by then hopefully you will appreciate his style.

Anyone new to thread, I would definitely check out Sammy's spoiler, this film definitely should not be your first criterion blind buy.

I loved both Solaris films, both were so unique and varied, the score was fantastic for Soderberghs version, but.... Tarkovksy's has Bach in it so thats the winner for me haha.

Tarkovsky, Bresson and Malick are my favorite directors in picking classical compositions for their films. The Tree of Life carries the best film soundtrack of classical music of all the films I have seen, Berlioz, Preisner, Gorecki, Tavener and Bach to name the one's off the top of my head.

Cliff Martinez Solaris falls in the category of original film scores which I would argue is quite different than a film soundtrack.

I was watching my Last Temptation of Christ blu-ray and noticed that Criterion didn't carry over many of the extras included in the dvd. Specifically most of Scorsese's research.

Are there any other blu-rays where Criterion didn't carry over the Criterion dvd extras?

Oh god I adore Tree of Life, the score is so powerful and important and works so beautifully with every scene.

Absolutely incredible filmmaking.

I'm going to finish up my batch of Olive Titles. I'm halfway through The Great Spy Chase now, and I'll finish up with The Brain. CC related as The Great Spy Chase stars Lino Ventura of Army of Shadows fame while The Brain stars Jean-Paul Belmondo from Breathless

Now that my first marathon race in a year is finished and in the books, I'm going to rest my battered legs on the sofa and either watch an Akira Kurosawa film or pull another random title out of the unwatched film noir hat.

If you liked Ghost Dog, then you'll probably enjoy Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai.

I'm trying to go through and watch / rewatch all my Blu-rays to see if I should keep them or not so I'm unsure about exactly what I'll be watching.

I've decided it's also time to include Criterions in the mix, as I know for a fact that I do not want them all and by continuing to buy them all, it's costing me money that I could use for something else.

That's a great strategy. I am becoming more careful nowadays with the movies I buy, and that includes Criterions. I might one day go through a period where I revisit films I own and try and "de-clutter" my collection, refining it more by removing films that I don't care for so much. I think 2 purchases I made last year I'm starting to regret since I can't see myself watching them often (that would be Shoah and World Cinema Project by Martin Scorcese). Those were both expensive and physically large releases so I'm not sure if they'll stay in my collection for too long. The only box set I'm very happy I bought was the John Cassavetes set though.

Over the past couple of years, my opinions on film have significantly changed. Things I used to like in high school and my early days in college are no longer as exciting or rewarding for me.

I will admit that the collector in me is getting the best of me when it comes to Criterion, but it's time to cut that cord and start separating myself from things I have no interest in ever revisiting again.

It's better, in my opinion, to have a smaller and more concise collection of films that I like compared to films I dislike.

Amazes me every time someone decides to sell off so many of their movies. Why did you buy them in the first place?

Even better, is when something is on sale, and someone says "I sold my copy 6 months ago, and this is a great price.... I'm gonna pick one up"

Now I see why "Life Coaches" exist.

I can understand someone selling off a movie collection if he or she all of a sudden needs money to move to Europe or for some other life-altering situation. Priorities change. I can also understand someone selling off a whole lot of DVDs with the purpose of upgrading them to Blu-ray, because that's what I did.

I honestly cannot think of any Blu-rays in my collection that I want to sell. Although I obviously watch some Blu-rays more than others, every Blu-ray that I own has a place. If my apartment caught on fire, I'd grab the case with the James Bond Blu-rays and Jean-Pierre Melville Blu-rays on my way out the door, but I would be saddened to lose the others.

I do, however, need to be increasingly cognizant of space in my apartment. I've still got plenty of space and my purchasing habits probably won't change anytime soon, but my current Blu-ray/DVD collection is already a commitment in terms of storage.
(This last paragraph is not an invitation to rant about Dual Format digipaks, though. They're still worth the trouble.)

As Owl said, I understand thinning the herd for upgrades or for space limitations but I never understood the logic of a mass purge because "your tastes have changed" Honestly your tastes changed before, they'll most likely change again.
