Glad you liked it. Bibi and Liv are mesmerizing.

I'm getting really anxious to re-visit Persona. I've held off on watching it again in anticipation of the blu-ray. It's been 6 years since my last viewing

I upgraded my copy of Repo Man a few weeks back when Amazon had about a dozen CC titles for under $20 as their deal of the day. I got around to watching it tonight and forgot what a wonderfully insane 80's sleezefest it was. Talk about an off the wall movie, man it was great. The little touches just make the world seem so out of place!

I need to dig out my DVD copy and give it to a friend and share the love!

It might be being rounded up and having all copies sunk in the ocean.

I'm the proud owner of a few choice Steven Spielberg movies, and I cannot imagine falling out of love with these movies...

Duel
This one is suspenseful and epic without wasting a single second. This is movie minimalism done right, and I've loved it since childhood. Duel really needs a Blu-ray upgrade.

Jaws
Jaws deserves every ounce of its acclaim over the decades. It's a masterwork example of how to pace a story for maximum effect and how to generate suspense. Yes, this movie borrows heavily from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, but it does so with tremendous glee. I love the lived-in feel of the movie and the easy-going character interactions. The shark effects are awesome...just awesome.
I also love how the people on the beach in Jaws actually look like real people. Pudgy little kids, weathered elderly people, people with goofy clothes, etc. If Jaws were made today by another director, everyone on the beach would have a perfect body with six-pack abs.
(Also, the fact that the Mayor was played by Murray Hamilton, who also starred in Anatomy of a Murder and Seconds, makes this a Criterion-related post. Faintly, yes, but surely.)

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Another Spielberg film that looks so much more epic and expensive than it probably was. It's heartwarming in a way that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Raiders of the Lost Ark
One of the most perfect adventure films, and a beautiful throwback to matinee movies of the old days.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
A near-perfect adventure film that cracks me up to this day. Gotta love the dinner scene. "I had bugs for lunch." "Snake surprise!" "Chilled monkey brains!"
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The concept manages to avoid wearing thin here, thanks to some outstanding chase scenes.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
I dock this one several points for the use of digital effects, but it's a decent and unfairly-maligned adventure film. Cate Blanchett with black hair and a Russian uniform works for me. I can't readily explain why, but it just works for me.

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Great use of John Ford's The Quiet Man in this movie! On its own terms, E.T. works in a way that seems so effortless, but was quite well played. The camera is close to the ground for much of the movie, as if to portray things from a child's eyes or a short alien's eyes. On a more superficial level, this movie makes me want to tear through some Reese's Pieces.

Poltergeist
Yeah, Tobe Hooper was the director, but Spielberg's involvement is crucial, and every scene exudes Spielberg's childlike wonder. This really is one of the most killer horror films out there. I'm 42 years old, and the clown doll still freaks me out.

Jurassic Park
There's some unnecessary fluff in this one, and I would have preferred a more faithful adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel. A faithful adaptation would not have put record audiences in the seat, though, and this movie is so resplendent with its merchandising genius that I cannot help but appreciate the whole affair.
In truth, it's like the Tyrannosaurus Rex attack scene on the Jeep vehicles is the steak, and the rest of the movie is simply the side dishes. That Tyrannosaurus Rex scene is awesome and riveting enough to earn my respect. Even if Spielberg had never created anything other than this one sequence, he would still be my hero.

Schindler's List
I "enjoy" this movie in the sense that I love watching how Spielberg guides the viewer to the emotional gut-punch at the end. It's heavy-handed, but in a necessary way. Spielberg also makes keen use of some noir-esque shadowplay. I love the scene where the shadows obscure the Nazi official's eyes when he takes the diamond bribe from Schindler.

War of the Worlds
I consider this to be one of Spielberg's most underrated movies. I have always been a huge fan of the H.G. Wells source novel, and this movie captures the spirt of that story so well. The scene of the tripods emerging over a distant hill in the countryside by a river is exactly what I envisioned when I used to read the novel during childhood. Spielberg nails this H.G. Wells novel spot-on.

In all fairness, there's a good reason why I do not own several of Spielberg's other movies, but there are a few gaps that I'd like to fill. Saving Private Ryan is nowhere near as effective as Malick's The Thin Red Line, but it's a strong movie nonetheless.

It's strange, but the women in most of Spielberg's movies do not exude any real sex appeal at all. I do not know if this is simply because of Spielberg's intent to show movies from a boy's treehouse club perspective, where girls were not yet sexualized in our eyes, or if it's an intention to portray strong females that are not objectified. Karen Allen in Raiders of the Lost Ark is attractive to me simply because of her spunky nature, but she's not overtly sexualized. The sexiest female in a Spielberg movie is Cate Blanchett in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Actually, the sexiest is Ashley Scott's purple-haired love android in A.I. Artificial Intelligence, but she's only shown for two seconds in the film.
I agree with the majority of this with the exception of Schindler's List, the Indy sequels and Poltergeist. Temple of Doom is great for the first hour but falls off the tracks completely during the second. Also, I find SPR to be just as effective as The Thin Red Line (this coming from a guy who finds Spielberg usually WAY overly sentimental). He tends to ride a fine line of sentiment in most of his films, and seems to be 50/50 on whether or not he crosses the line for me.

I just got back from seeing Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris on a big theater screen at Midtown Art Cinema here in Atlanta.

Oh my dear sweet Lord, this was a cool experience.

I actually had company for this one, since one of my running friends wanted to see the movie as well. We got there early to hear an Emory University professor give a short introduction to the film, and we stayed to hear the professor answer questions from the audience. I love how every person has different interpretations of certain aspects of the film. I've never thought of Solaris as purposely ambiguous, but I also do not think that it's a cop-out to say that everyone takes something different home from the film. I've seen this movie about a dozen times, and I realize something new with each subsequent viewing.

The professor discussed how Bibi Andersson (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona) was initially in consideration to play the role of Hari. I love Bibi Andersson, but I think that everyone will agree with me that Natalya Bondarchuk owns the role.

I just finished The Great Beauty and it instantly became my favorite film of 2013. I honestly can't believe what I just saw.

The film is very similar to Amarcord, in my opinion, where we are taken on a journey with the characters in the film over x amount of time and grow and learn with them, until it all comes full-circle in a not so perfect, yet satisfying kind of way.

Amazing story, amazing cinematography, amazing film all around.

This is so great to hear! I love Amarcord and will definitely put The Great Beauty on my B&N list for the next sale. Thanks for your thoughts.

The Blu-ray is absolutely stunning. I honestly can't imagine it looking any better.

After I watched the film, I decided to read several reviews instead of watching the documentary, Liv and Ingmar. Even with some interpretations under my belt, I still think it would benefit from another several watches.

I can't get the intro sequence out of my head...so haunting!

No problem!

Amarcord is one of my favorite films and hands down my favorite Fellini. I truly mean it when I say it, but it is the one thing I thought of the most over the course of this film.

Buy with confidence!

Just got back from seeing Grand Budapest Hotel! I saw the 10:30 PM showing here. Wowowowowowowowow. This blows Moonrise Kingdom out of the stratosphere. Totally amazing set and production design and art production and costume design. Amazing attention to detail. This is the most perfect Wes Anderson movie ever...its almost too perfect. So many amazing actors. This was a Wes Anderson movie on steroids. Wes Anderson blew his load on this film for sure. I give this film 3 3/4 stars all the way. It's up there on par with The Royal Tenenbaums but not as funny. There was a story here though and what a grand story. Holy F@##$%*%$^*#@)!@*%^*

I have all of them and my favorites would be 3 WOMEN and SWEETIE, with DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE maybe tied with A MAN ESCAPED for third. The other two are "interesting" and worth seeing, but potentially more off-putting with probably less replay value. Of course after saying that, I'd like to revisit FISH TANK soon because I just watched Andrea Arnold's amazing reimagining of WUTHERING HEIGHTS.

The only one I've seen, let alone own, is "The Double Life of Veronique" which is one of my favorite films of all time. So, I may be biased. But I think it's miraculous. Heck, it's worth it for Irene Jacob's performance alone, IMO.

It is possible that some of the Melville films may be put out by Studio Canal who has rights to Red Circle and Army of Shadows at least in region B territories.

I have Le Cercle Rouge (The Red Circle) on blu ray from Studio Canal, one of my favourite films. Only other i have from him on blu is Two Men in Manhattan, which is also excellent.

Medium Cool, 3 Women, Sweetie and Double Life are only recommended if you enjoy arthouse cinema. I would not recommend blind buying any of those (even though I did for 3 Women and Double Life). Double Life is so arcane that you will need to watch it multiple times to understand or have been familiar with Kieslowski's other works.

A Man Escaped is actually the most accessible film in that mix followed by Fish Tank. Both are very good. I absolutely fell for Fish Tank - a truly wonderful film.

All except Medium Cool are above average, though. MC is quite the stinker.

After watching Persona last night (the glorious blu-ray released by criterion), I would argue otherwise. She is amazing actress and more versatile than Bondarchuk.

Persona looks divine on blu-ray. The detail and contrast is incredible. Sven Nyvist lighting technique is brought to the forefront with this release. This is one of the greatest movies ever made.

Le Samourai is a great film, and, in fact, it was my all-time favorite film for years before I rediscovered the brilliance of Jacque Tourneur's Out of the Past not long ago. (Of course, Le Samourai might regain the throne, because it's a tough call between these two amazing movies.)

There is a French Pathe Blu-ray of Le Samourai, but the transfer is murky, and it's one of the rare instances where I would recommend the Criterion DVD over a Blu-ray. The existing Criterion DVD is well worth owning if you are even remotely intrigued by the movie. I'm inclined to say that I don't think that a suitable high definition transfer of Le Samourai is coming soon, but I honestly have no idea and, for all I know, Criterion may announce an upgrade next month.

Sadly that seems to be the case with the blu-ray of KC Confidential. It's a shame a quality noir like that isn't in good hands.
