The review is up over at dvdbeaver.com . Looks like they added a brown filter and it looks dramatically different from previous releases. Apparently this was the intended look of the film since the director himself supervised the transfer.

Oooh I really like the transfer, they've done a great job with it - compared to others its incredible... actually surprised at the quality haha

Question: Did CC work with the transfer before it was transferred to video to create the grain? Cause I can't get over how good it looks lol

I don't feel like writing a big User Review at the moment, but I finished going through all of the extras on the Criterion Blu-ray of Harold Lloyd's The Freshman just now, and I enthusiastically recommend this disc.

I initially thought that Criterion's elaborate Dual Format package for The Freshman was a whole lot of fuss just for one 77-minute movie, but the whole package merits celebration, because the three short films are hilarious as well, and the supplements are wonderful.

Gilda and The Narrow Margin are in my top five and will never cease to entertain the ever living hell out of me. The others (except Cry Danger and The Breaking Point) are the best new discoveries from my binge that I haven't seen listed yet.
Sometimes it almost seems like theres too many, but its certainly not a challenge you'll regret!
Agreed. A few of these would have gone on my above list, but I darn near listed my entire film noir collection anyway and needed to stop writing. Haha.

I love Gilda, and I'm thinking of ordered the Italian Blu-ray, although I suspect that a U.S. release is not far over the horizon.

Haha, totally kniw how you feel, almost seems like the list is neverending!
I've almost made it through the pile I set out to watch though, been a pretty persistent couple months

Gilda is one of my favorite classic films, the dialogue and performances are really great and I still don't think anybody had been sexier than Rita Hayworth was in that.
Hopefully when a US release comes out it will have lossless audio, but seeing as The Lady From Shanghai didn't I'm pretty sure it won't :/

Doh. I see how we're supposed to do this now. I have only seen one foreign film from CC. I just realized how awful that is.

Ingenious, ensuring somebody would want to at least come to the desert island and rescue you for the surefire massive fortune they'd make off selling these titles.

I think The Breaking Point is available on DVD from Warner's Archives. Great film. It blows the more famous version out of the water IMO. Another Garfield noir worth finding is his last film-He Ran All the Way.

Hrmmmmmmm...

USA: Rosemary's Baby
Japan: Throne of Blood
Sweden: Everlasting Moments
France: Carlos (ask me later and I'll say Three Colors or The Double Life of Veronique, ask me again after that and I'll go back to Carlos and so forth and so on)
Italy: Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (I need to take one blind buy)
UK: The Third Man (Brief Encounter is surprisingly close here)

BTW, nice spin on the deserted island scenario.

Ha! I did not think about that, since these are sincerely my favorite films in the above categories...at least until Le Samourai gets a Criterion Blu-ray upgrade. It's a shame that they are no longer available to more people.

Sweden: Wild Strawberries
France: Jules and Jim

I just secured a ticket to see Fellini's 8 1/2 at Midtown Art Cinema here in Atlanta on Tuesday night. This is advertised as a "new digital restoration", and I have no idea what that entails, but I'm sure that this movie will look awe-inspiring on a big screen.

Maybe I'll actually understand the movie after I see it on the big screen, but I won't make any bets as such. I don't think that I'll ever truly understand this one.

It does indeed! Its just a bit of a pain in the ass to get those Warner Archive titles sometimes
Still haven't seen either of those other ones, gonna have to give them a watch pretty soon.
Its a real shame John Garfields career and life were cut short so soon, he was a great actor.

Another one I dont recall seeing on either of our lists though is Gun Crazy. Thats a great one too!
