It is bad, but at least you can get it really cheap and they're not charging premium price. I've actually been disappointed with every studio canal release I've bought besides Contempt A/V wise (and even that is a stretch), and those digibook things are so cheap and corny.

Hello Scott,

I hope this email finds you well. We do hope to carry plastic replacement cases for the NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, and when they are available they will be on our website here: http://www.criterion.com/shop/other. Please check back soon. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions, and thank you for supporting Criterion!

Best,
Jon Mulvaney

I only own Le Cercle Rouge, and Delicatessen, but they're both good releases in my opinion, and got solid reviews on here (albeit not as glowing for the latter). I personally like the book-style casing, but I am a digibook collector. From reviews, La Grande Illusion looks great too; that's probably the next one I'll get.

oh, Contempt isn't too bad? anybody else here to back that opinion up? I've been kind of on the fence with buying that one.

since there are so much movies that dont even have a decent DVD release i got a little bit over the need of having everything in the best possible quality, and i dont need everything from criterion as well

its nice if a criterion slot gets used for a movie that would else get only underhelming release by KINO or OLIVE for example. (since they put not much effort into restoring a movie)

Can you order them directly from Criterion or no?

I would imagine that you would have to have a member order it for you and they can in turn mail it to you.

I don't have those two, but to me the digibooks I've bought are just cheap looking. Glue visible, the book just slapped and glued onto it, the little disc nub feeling fragile as hell etc. As far as A/V I also think its possible my opinion is skewed knowing Studio Canal is the "Oop Criterion Graveyard" and all of them are inferior versions.

It's not great, and there is a Spanish BD I've not seen in motion or reviews for, but it is a solid upgrade from the DVD for sure. My opinion

I don't think StudioCanal's release of Ran is bad. It's not what a Criterion release would've been, but it's not bad.

But a superb StudioCanal (US) release is Renoir's La Grande Illusion. I can't speak to the others, as the only other ones I have are The Third Man (I got it super cheap, and I wanted to have the extras that weren't on the Criterion edition) and Ran.

e-mail Criterion at orders@criterion.com tell them that you want to purchase some replacement cases to the UK. They'll respond with a total and tell you to send it via paypal.

They ship everything internationally except for actual dvd & blu releases.

There's a (somewhat) local B&N that has a copy marked down quite a bit, and the next time I'm there I'll probably snap it up.

I know what you mean in that it certainly isn't just an upconverted dvd or anything but man I was disappointed with that one. I'd still recommend the blu but like you said it just isn't what it could've (should've?) been. I've yet to see their Grande Illusion disc.

Just picked it up today with the coupon code at deepdiscount.

From what I've seen online (here and elsewhere) the PQ looks very good, and it left a huge hole in my collection when I sold off the Criterion DVD a few years back. This is absolutely one of my favorite films and I'll be glad to have it again.

Oh yeah, they actually changed the books later on to make them worse. I only have the book for Le Cercle (Delicatessen is a US release) and the pamphlet has its own pocket that it slides into. The entire quality of the newer releases of the books are apparently worse, including the finish of the book

Here's some pics I took of it when I got it last year

[Show spoiler]
