It's a grade-A head explosion, though. Nobody can deny that. Head explosions just haven't been the same since the onset of computer-generated effects, so this is a welcome throwback to the past for true lovers of cinema.

Criterion has been known to throw a good cult film in the mix from time to time. Seconds and Eyes Without a Face are good recent examples.

I've never seen Scanners, but do you think this would be a safe blind-buy? I'm not huge on horror but I like Cronenberg a lot (I have Videodrome and Naked Lunch on BD).

Grade A brain explosions do sound intriguing.

That was indeed what I was referring to. Good eye.

Looks like an 80s paperback novel. I dig it for its oddity.

If you like Videodrome, then you're probably ready for Scanners. Videodrome is my favorite Cronenberg movie to date, but Scanners is a lot of fun along similar lines.

I still haven't seen Naked Lunch. I'll have to remedy that at some point.

That's the one that I'm most excited to see in the Demy set. Jeanne Moreau is the greatest.

It sure doesn't look like a temporary cover from the looks of it. But others have pointed out its taken from the original Criterion Laser disc artwork.

Here's the original and the BD:

While I absolutely adore Cronenberg's work, Eyes Without a Face and Seconds are films I would consider much more "highbrow" than Scanners. Eyes Without a Face especially has a very chilling, sublime poetry to it.

If you haven't seen the old Wellspring release -- which was actually quite good back in the DVD era -- you are in for a special treat, Owl.

The 'cool life' -- casinos, gambling, stylish cars, beautiful women, the South of France.

After you're done with it, pick up Barbet Shroeder's Cheaters.

Criterion's output this year has been tremendous!!

Ya, looks doubtful now. And they're probably holding "Crimes of the Future" for their release of THE BROOD. Really was hoping for a Criterion release of his first feature "SHIVERS" which is easily the best of his early horror flicks. Maybe some day...

I respect your opinion Great Owl and maybe Scanners has reached an elite cult status with the emergence of Cronenberg. I have seen this many times throughout the years and mostly remember it as a comedy where people in the theater would literally explode in laughter when...the heads exploded in the screen .

Anyways, I'll leave it at after I add that, Scanners will probably sell more than all the July releases combined .

On the + really excited about the Jacques Remy box set and Pickpocket .
I absolutely love Cronenberg, but Scanners is not one of his better films.

Pickpocket = YES! Bresson was one of my top picks for what I wanted that I posted yesterday! My wife and I just watched and loved A Man Escaped. This makes the month for me!

Scanners = Never seen it, never really cared for Cronenberg, probably a pass, but I might try to see it before the release...

Insomnia = Never seen it, but I like the Nolan version. Pretty sure I'll pick this up.

The Essential Jacques Demy = Never seen any of his films. Will go and do a little reading, but I do tend to like Criterion boxsets - It's really fun to dive into someone's work like that.

The Big Chill = Never seen it and never been tempted to.

One definite buy, two probable ones.
