Hopefully the video quality is as good as the Searchers is, or at least close.
Of course that is asking a lot given the age of Stagecoach vs the Searchers.

Default Walkabout issue

My Walkabout Blu freezes about 1 hour into the film on both my PS3 and BDP-960. Both firmwares are current and the disc is clean.

Anybody else have a problem? It this the same as the Days of Heaven glitch I heard about?

I haven't had any problems with "Wakabout" but I think I've read others who have. You may want to post it on Criterion's Facebook page and see if anyone else had a similar problem or to let Criterion know.

Also e-mail Criterion and let them know also.. they may even mail you out a replacement disc and would probably only take a few days.

About to go watch STAGECOACH now. Still no luck spotting a BY BRAKHAGE set at Best Buy but indications point that some stores will in fact stock the set. WE'll see.... I think I can get it cheaper retail thru Barnes & Noble. Can't online order this one... to anal retentive over the case to have a beat up copy.

Yeah a couple of us a few pages back posted about the issues and High-Def Digest mentioned it in their review.

Update on my situation....

Thanks
I have tried two copies and neither will even load on my PS3 or BP-S360 both with the latest firmware. The edge of the second disc is very jagged but never inspected the first. I have 998 Blu-Ray (And even more discs since that is only counting multi-disc TV shows and stuff as 1) and have never encountered a Blu-Ray disc as jagged as that to the point you can easily cut your finger on it. So to me that seems like something that could cause a problem and a production error that would explain not everybody having the problems. Going to try and exchange it again today if they even have another copy. Most stores here don't even bother with Criterion and those that do don't exactly stockpile them A lot of people had the same problems with Days of Heaven so seems Criterion need to step up their quality control during production IMO.

High-Def Digest also mentioned it in their review....

And at around the 51 minute mark I noticed a technical hiccup, that kind of pulled me out of the movie just for a second. But honestly, even with these faults, 'Walkabout' looks amazing for its age.
I seem to be the rare person with discs that won't even load so hopefully once/if I get a disc that will load I don't run into this problem that is more common
So third disc loads and doesn't freeze or skip at the problem area. Can really hear the Blu-Ray player stressing at that point though so it still isn't reading it totally correctly. Have not been able to test the full movie to see if it ends up messing up in any other part instead. But these differences on the same players at least confirm that it isn't a compatibility issue with players and is indeed faulty copies. The edge of this is still fairly jagged but not as jagged and I am still thinking the jagged edges being so extreme from normal is causing issues so to others having problems are your discs very jagged around the edge? Just going to hold onto this one now and hope they offer disc replacements. Sick of exchanging it and could end up with another worse disc.

Default Halloween Criterion Edition Blu ray? Only a fools hope?

I learnt recently that there was a Criterion Edition Halloween on Laserdisk have no idea what sort of special features the LD had on it.

I would like to see a Blu ray release of Halloween the Criterion Edition but with Starz/ Archer Bay already releasing Halloween I doubt we will see a Criterion Edition on Blu ray.

Criterion probably doesn't even own the rights to Halloween anymore.

That would be cool but Anchor Bay/Starz owns the rights to this. Halloween is more deserving of a Criterion release than some of the other crap they are releasing.

We will likely never see a Criterion Halloween disc, they never had the rights during the DVD years.

Criterion had a ton of great films in their laserdisc collection, but so many will never be released by them again (like all the classic Columbia & Warner discs).

Criterion no longer has the distribution rights however...

Anchor Bay was able to obtain the commentary created by Criterion for the most recent special edition DVD and it is included on the Blu-ray Disc.

Still exclusive to the Criterion laserdisc are:

- Seperate music and effects track
- Photo essay on the making, marketing, and mimicking of Halloween
- Illustrated filmographies of John Carpenter, Donald Pleasence, and Jamie Lee Curtis
- Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert give splatter movies the thumbs down while praising Halloween in a controversial 1980 sneak previews segment
- Genre guide by John McCarty, including capsule reviews of cold-blooded killer movies from "Bad Seed, The" to Halloween 5 (1989)

Funny you should say...I finished watching this film earlier this evening...blind buy as well...and I loved it! A few nights ago, I gave "M" a spin, and thought it was very interesting. So far, 3 for 3 in Criterion blind buys. I watched "Repulsion" a few months ago when I purchased it and liked it too.

Just ordered "The 400 Blows" (blind buy) from Best Buy's website today. They had it for $17.99 plus tax and shipping. Not too shabby. I searched for lots of other CC titles, and all were full price. Wonder why it is on sale...

I'm hoping you all could give me some of your opinions on the following films. I have not heard too much about them, except for their synopsis on Criterion's webpage: Playtime, Howard's End, Monsoon Wedding, Chunking Express, Paris, Texas, and A Christmas Tale.

Thanks in advance!!

-Dave

I only have Chunking Express out of that list, it was alright, but nothing that special IMO.

i must vehemently disagree! i think chungking express is incredibly special and important. it's very hard to find a film that addresses love whilst being creative and while never being lame. i would highly recommend it and call it one of the most important criterion releases (especially on blu)

What's missing doesn't sound so great. The only thing missing that IMO would be cool to have would be the Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert review bit. All the text stuff, filmographies etc is fluff that can be found on the net. The music and effects track is interesting in a way, but you can just turn the picture off and listen to it anyway...

Paris, Texas is one of the great contemporary films.
