A while back I re-watched Carnival of Souls (1962); excellent, and this is a film I would probably never have heard of if not for the Criterion label. When it comes to b&w horror films that exude creepy atmosphere, this one is towards the top of my list. The melancholy organ music added a lot to this atmosphere as well. Very creepy/unerrving; throughout, there was an acute sense of despair/sadness...
Note this title is not on Blu yet; I just wanted to mention it in this thread since it is on the Criterion label. The regular DVD looks decent, but may look better with a Blu upgrade (though who knows how much better; after all, it is an older & low budget b&w film...). [Show spoiler] [Show spoiler]

Interestingly enough, in the Criterion announcement article on the news pages, someone else mentioned that cover difference, and that this site corrected the cover for the release's page. I'm still seeing the apparently-erroneous version in the announcement article, though. I just looked at Amazon's listing. They don't have an image up for the CC BD, but the image they have for Amazon Instant Video edition is the "erroneous" one (though it does have the Criterion logo and such on the image). |

Final Results for most re-watchable Criterion films
Here it is, everyone! Thanks to all that submitted their top 5 most re-watchable Criterion films (from Blu-rays or DVDs). Out of exactly 70 lists/postings, here are the most re-watched films culled from all the people who posted. In the parenthesis after the film is the number of times the film was listed in people's top 5 (ie. Seven Samurai was listed on 18 out of 70 lists). The higher the number, the more popular the film was overall. I didn't include any films that received less than 2 appearances on any list. Perhaps this list will also help those who are curious about best Criterions to blind-buy. Enjoy! ![]() Seven Samurai (18) The Third Man (14) Night of the Hunter (13) Three Colors Trilogy (9) Videodrome (9) The Thin Red Line (8) Brazil (7) Dazed and Confused (7) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (7) Rushmore (7) The Lady Vanishes (6) Yojimbo (6) 12 Angry Men (5) The 39 Steps (5) The 400 Blows (5) City Lights (5) La Haine (5) M (5) Rosemary's Baby (5) The Royal Tenenbaums (5) Charade (4) Chungking Express (4) The Double Life of Veronique (4) Le Cercle Rouge (4) Sweet Smell of Success (4) Beauty and the Beast (3) Blow Out (3) The Darjeeling Limited (3) Godzilla (3) The Gold Rush (3) House (3) The Killing (3) Modern Times (3) Repo Man (3) Wild Strawberries (3) Anatomy of a Murder (2) Antichrist (2) Army of Shadows (2) Being John Malkovich (2) Bottle Rocket (2) A Canterbury Tale (DVD) (2) Eating Raoul (2) Five Easy Pieces (2) The Game (2) I Know Where I'm Going! Surprised by how high up The Thin Red Line is. I've only seen it once when I was younger, and I can't really remember it that well. I don't remember liking it that much though, but I do need to see it again now that I feel I'm mature enough to better appreciate Malick's efforts.

Thanks for compiling that Most Rewatched list, jw007! I'm glad that people share my fascination with The Third Man and The Night of the Hunter.
I just came home to find these Blu-rays at my doorstep... Double Indemnity Touch of Evil Sabrina Gunfight at the O.K. Corral Death Wish It's a shame that Riot in Cell Block 11 came out a week too late, otherwise I would have won the award for most awesome haul in the history of Blu-ray.com. I personally am rather surprised The Third Man received so many votes since its been out of print for some time now. I guess people either have the Studiocanal version or rent it on Netflix. Other surprises for me were: Videodrome, Rushmore and I guess Yojimbo. |

Completely agree. I almost included it on my own list but sometimes its difficult watching a film like this often. It's one of my coveted Criterions of all though and definitely my favorite Malick film. It goes well beyond war and into the human condition in ways that no other film I've seen boldly go into.

I should have voted on that most rewatchable list! I'd vote Videodrome, Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (it's really long, but it's the kind of movie that I love getting lost in and can watch over and over - I can't believe no one else mentioned it), Royal Tenenbaums, Nashville, and Wild Strawberries (such a life-affirming movie!). |
