I saw that you were selling off your James Dean movies. I didn't think that you were a fan.

I really enjoyed Walter Hill's films from that late 70s/early 80s era (Hard Times, The Driver, The Warriors, The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs., and Streets of Fire).

On Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, be sure you catch the 1988 Turner Preview version - as with most of Peckinpah's films, the studio massacred the film for its original theatrical release. It's not a perfect film by far, but it's always fascinated me. Then again, Peckinpah's a favorite of mine.
Thanks again for the information.

I really enjoy The Driver and The Warriors, though I'm not a fan of some of Hill's later films, such as Bullet To The Head.

On the subject of Peckinpah, I've only seen Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (my favorite), The Getaway (my fourth favorite), Straw Dogs (my second favorite), and The Wild Bunch (my third favorite).

I downgraded my DigiBooks to just the regular Amaray cases, so I sold them off.

Would anybody here be able to provide me info on how to collaborate with or be commissioned by CC to help them design future cover art?

Thanks for the reply. Based on this, If I can't get a direct line to her, I suppose the best route would be to email Jon Mulvaney a sample of my larger works and ask him to pass them on.

I think the best thing would be to contact Jon Mulvaney.

You would do well designing artwork for Criterion, as some of the work you've done is excellent.

What would you guys say are the best film to start with from Akira Kurosawa?

Some of his films sound so intriguing and get rave reviews and he seems to be a very important director? Also his films get great releases form Criterion.

Been eyeing up films like Seven Samurai, Yojimo/sanjuro, High and Low and Hidden Fortress...

I have Rashomon but not had chance to watch.

My first Kurosawa was Rashomon, but Seven Samurai is his most accessible and widely hailed one.

I've also seen High and Low, which reminded me of Hitchcock film.

I'm not really qualified to give you an answer as I have only seen 4. I'd say that if you are fond of samurai films, you may never look back. I, personally, am not fond of the samurai genre, but even watching a film like Yojimbo, it is obvious that he was an absolute master at his craft. Shot composition is just stunning.

I went with Seven Samurai first, and then Rashomon next. After those two, I kept watching more Kurosawa and I never looked back.

Seven Samurai is one of those "the masses are sometimes right" films, in that the universal acclaim for the film is spot-on.

I contacted him while I was still in college around 2009 or 2010. He said they have a very small design team, and rarely hire or even take on interns (I don't think they take on interns at all if I remember correctly). Unless you have a lot of professional experience, it might be more promising to start elsewhere.

My first Kurosawa purchase was Seven Samurai in the early 2000's. It was easily my best blind buy ever since it made me a huge fan of the director's work, as well as Mifune. I'd say with total confidence that it's his greatest achievement as a filmmaker.

With that said however, I do think Yojimbo and Sanjuro (my 2nd and 3rd Kurosawa purchases) are more accessible than Seven Samurai, and to me a safer blind buy. They're shorter, and simpler when it comes to storyline. Essentially, they're transported western movies (which in turn got remade into Leone westerns). I feel like I can watch these at any time, while I have to be in a certain mood to see Seven Samurai.

I should also mention that my favorite Kurosawa movie is The Hidden Fortress. This is a very fun adventure movie to watch, and there's quite an epic feel to it all. The locales vary more here than many Kurosawa films, and I'd say it's funnier than many others too.

Overall, I'd honestly say you can't go wrong with any Kurosawa movie

Agree with everyone saying Seven Samurai. I would follow up with High and Low. Shows that Kurosawa was more than just samurai films.

Thanks, Scott! I've been saving the real stuff for my June 26 show, so that statement is a nice vote of confidence.

I'm definitely not looking for a job or to even get paid. I would just like to be given a cover art challenge and if it doesn't make the cut, it's no big loss.

Only two days until I begin my descent into artful madness, as I watch 25 (or more) titles Criterion deemed worthy enough to carry their branding.

All are from the current numbering system (DVD/BD) and all are films I have not yet seen.

Currently at my disposal are: Blow Out, Carnival of Souls, Cronos, Dead Ringers, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Sid & Nancy. Wish me luck.

That was silly of you. The Long Riders is a terrific film.

For what it's worth, My Darling Clementine is my favorite Western, bar none.

i would not consider myself a fan of westerns by any means and I was not aware of this film's existence...

But, Ebert's inclusion as a 'Great Movie', Jay's vote, and 25/25 100% on rotten has me intrigued.

I see that it is a 20th Century Fox title. it'd be nice if they put it out. at one of their 50% sales, it could then be had for 8 bucks. those are the kind of blind buys I love!

I would recommend Yojimbo. Seven Samurai is amazing but the run time scares people off. Yojimbo is in the same genre and you might be familiar with the basic story line (Fistful of Dollars and Last Man Standing are also based on Red Harvest).
