I'm really looking forward to seeing this, because I love the Nevil Shute novel. Ava Gardner is one of the greatest.

That new Kino Lorber line of Blu-rays is going to do a number on my wallet this year, because I'm interested in every single title on their queue.

I watched it in four sittings (one for each part) and I was fine. This is coming from someone that is a real stickler when it comes to watching lengthy films in one sitting (I watched The Best of Youth in one sitting.) I wouldn't say there are clear stopping points with each part, but there's enough there for the impact to be substantial.

I went through the 9-hour version over three nights. I think the pacing of the film is part of what it's about. I needed the repetitions and slow parts to let what I was seeing sink in. And then there's the scope of what it's talking about, which comes across in the length. Not just the scope of the holocaust itself but the lingering of the attitudes that enabled it. And I was also glad to have some down time just for relief.

It's unique in my film-watching. Like any movie, it is something to watch, but it's also an experience in itself. And I definitely don't think everyone who watches it will enjoy it. I'd be interested in hearing what you think.

Is Black Moon worth a blind buy? I found it on eBay for a decent price but the reviews I've read basically say it doesn't make any sense. I'm down for a movie just to experience it, but I thought I'd run it buy some more film/Criterion savvy folks first

I personally wouldn't recommend blind buying it.

I believe it's available on Hulu, if you want to watch it first.

Thanks friend. Sometimes I get suckered in to Criterions in the $15 range regardless of how the movie actually is. Think I'll take a pass until I see it myself first

I second that. I saw it and passed on because while it has some nice bits, I didn't think I would watch it again ever. Now Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is something that I would not hesitate to snag on BD.

I picked this up today at Costco for $19.99, they had an assortment of Wes Anderson Criterions for $19.99 which include The Life Aquatic, Fantastic Mr.Fox, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, & The Royal Tenenbaums.
They had The Life Aquatic out already? I thought it was a no-no before official release dates.

Thanks - Not sure what to expect really, just found it fascinating and that fact he used now archival footage? I do love a good Documentry though, and it has had rave reviews - just a bit daunting 9 hour documentary not he holocaust.

Just really interested to see his approach because in a way its strange not using archival footage to push the 'story' along and to teach, but I guess maybe the testimonials make it more powerful and the fact they survived and stuff makes it more important?

I am rambling now haha - well it should be here 7-23 days -.- no one in UK was selling on Amazon grrr

Notice Arrow on the UK Forums have announced Salvatore Guiliano so wondering in the next wave of announcements if Criterion will be announcing an upgrade themselves?

MoC released Hands Over the City earlier this year. I'm hoping these two get upgraded sooner rather than later.

On the Beach Blu-ray

Is that a typo on the poster or was Anthony Perkins sometimes billed as "Antony Perkins"?

It's unclear from the way you put it, but have you not seen the movie before? I had brought it up in the Kino thread as one of about a dozen and a half UA titles that I hope Kino has licensed from MGM for the new Studio Classics line, and then it's announced! I happened to run across my MGM/UA DVD the other night, and was tempted to watch it, but I'll wait until the Blu-ray comes out.

It is a no-no. But as I recall from the days I had a Costco membership, it wasn't uncommon for them to put things out before the official on-sale date. Hell, I recall when Image started releasing The Dick Van Dyke Show on DVD about 10 years ago, and Costco had the first two seasons for sale a full month before their street date.

It wasn't an argument about the other thing, so I didn't include it.
having no say over over advertising, I think, is dependent upon which studio is distributing your films and who the director is... but "maybe, maybe not" means that I don't care. it seems that you are having a conversation with yourself. I said that I would feel better knowing that Cuarón approved of it. (I guess I lied because I don't feel better about it.) it is still ugly.

"was not provided by anyone tied to the making of the film" was the quote upon which you are so determined to hang me... well, if what you say is 100% true ("commonly known",) it should be brought to your attention that the studio and the producers are far more "tied to the making of the film" than a guy (girl?) who does art for EA and Adidas and is commissioned by a home video distributor (who by the way had nothing to do with the film at the time of its creation) 15 years later.

and of course, my point about it lending itself to artistic interpretation....., you are, however, more concerned about proving to me matters of creative control. I don't think you are right about that either. If you prove me wrong, well then good for you, but the artwork has, IMO, more problems than that.
