I did enjoy much more his last movie "Like Someone In Love (in fact, I fell in love with this movie) - already bought the UK blu-ray; well, and I watched again "Copy Conforme/Certified Copy" and tend to love it much more.
it reminded me R.Linklater's "Before Sunset" (with this "real time" ballad, strolling in the street when they are talking the bateau mouche, etc... same here with Copy Conforme : they are talking and talking (often about arts, architecture (like in "Before Sunrise", but also memories...
and despite the fact that I'm not a huge fan of J.Binoche (my weakness going for Julie Delpy), she's very moving in this movie;
I love how the movie, surreptitiously, slowly is going into something strange- just creating this strange, surreal atmosphere-
I loved how I was stucked when she called him "mon chéri" (although that could be predictable...)
now, this is very strange in the end - and I didn't want to read some other reviews (because I will rewatch it a third time) : is it a dream of an encounter ? is it her memories ? is he died ?
you can't tell in the end because some things "doesn't match" with this real-time story (places, scenes, the way she re-dressed, some parts their conversation, etc...)
that's how the film goes into another direction than the Linklater series.
This reminds me the atmosphere of some old Resnais movies such "L'amour à mort" for instance...

oh and I wanted to add that he is really the king of "hors champ"/off-camera
it's really fascinating...
it even goes a step further in "Someone Like In Love"

Hey, The Traveler is subtitled and "The Report", included with Certified Copy, has forced subtitles.

Regarding Certified Copy, I found it to be similar to Linklater's Before Trilogy with some trace elements of Malle's My Dinner With Andre. The beginning in particular is very deep in a philosophical kind of way, but as the film progresses it shifts into a deep, romantic kind of way.

I need to rewatch it in order to understand it better, but I really appreciated that IMDB users' interpretation.

Don't know if this sways you, but if you like classic science fiction from that period, I think it is one of the best and almost believable. The star, Paul Mantee just died last December in Malibu. I believe he's related to the owners of one of San Francisco's oldest Italian restaurants. So it depends on what you like- I'd throw away any Wes Anderson movie first ;-)

Actually mcvitie, maybe spire will sell you his for a bargain price! [win-win]

Once Upon a Time is beyond fantastic. Just a wonderful, wonderful film.

I'll also echo the pricey comment. I've been waiting for a price drop.

I grabbed the Akerman set for a good price yesterday. I hope the films in the set are of the same high caliber as Jeanne Dielmann

I saw Hotel Monterey theatrically last year, screened from 16mm and sans any kind of score, as per Akerman's wishes. It quickly became one of my most beloved cinema experiences. I saw Jeanne Dielman in the theatre too, which was one of my top five theatrical experiences of all time. It's such a cliche, but there truly is nothing quite like that film. With Pickpocket now announced JD is at the top of my most longed for upgrade (Criterion should do a full box-set of Akerman's work too).

I watched the new The Life Aquatic Blu-ray last night, and was predictably impressed by the fantastic transfer. I had the Criterion DVD, but even found myself revisiting all of the extras in the wake of the film.

I watched Like Someone in Love and Close-Up yesterday back-to back. I've seen the latter several times but it was the first time I've seen Like Someone in Love. It was excellent. There's a lot of symmetry between it and Certified Copy.

I'm going to view Certified Copy and maybe The Traveler today. This will be my 5th or 6th viewing of Certified Copy. Some films just do it for me more than others. That's one of them.

I just finished my Kiarostami marathon with Like Someone in Love just now. Phenomenal. It's my favorite of his behind Close-Up.

This guy is one of the greats. I really need to watch Taste of Cherry on Hulu. I'll more than likely pick up The Wind Will Carry Us via Cohen, and I googled Through the Olive Trees and came across a full upload of it on Dailymotion (a similar site to YouTube). They're not my priorities right now (as I have a lot of films I need to get through, but I'm making myself a reminder).

Through the Olive Trees is rumored to be coming from Criterion.

  • Richard Burton at his perfectly craggy best, well oiled with drink, hard-bitten cynicism, and that magnificent voice.
  • One of the smartest and grittiest Cold War espionage thrillers ever made.
  • The ending.
Buy it!

Ahh. There's nothing like seeing a film the way the director intended. I'm sure if Scorsese would've been at that cropped-image Taxi Driver screening I went to a couple years ago, he'd have lost his head. I lost mine and scheduled an appointment with the director of the festival to vent my outrage.

(...and after such an enthusiastic reaction, I think Hotel Monterrey will be the first film I watch from the set. )

I just finished watching In the Realm of the Senses and I personally think it is one of the worst films that I have ever seen.

This is one of the only films that I have ever seen where I could not devote a huge portion of myself to the material thrown my way. From the moment that the film began until it (finally) ended, I could not get into it. A lot of it has to do with the film's progression. All of the oral sex scenes and other sexcapades grew excessively repetitive to the point that the film was an unofficial pornographic film. I'm not trying to be prude, as I think that sex, like everything else, can serve a particular purpose in film. It's just the way that it was carried out led to a very boring piece of work, in my opinion.

I am not knocking Oshima's directing necessarily, as I think he did an overall decent job considering the material that he was directing, but I thought the story and the entire events surrounding the film were both terrible. I'm not questioning the validity of what actually transpired, but I had a hard time believing that everything thrown to the audience was fact.

I don't know, I'm just really conflicted with my feelings right now.

Long story short: I didn't like it.

I don't want to sway you one way or the other on this, because I think what people like is very personal and unique to each individual. I've followed other people's recommendations before, only to be somewhat let down upon seeing the film myself. (I still try to appreciate the films by learning more about them).

So that being said, I seem to be in the unpopular crowd here who loves Robinson Crusoe on Mars. In fact, I went out of my way to find it on DVD (then upgraded to bluray) ... which, I'm pretty sure, is the film that opened my eyes to the Criterion company. Having seen the film originally in the theater as a 9 or 10 year old ... over and over and over again ... my reasons for loving it are highly sentimental. (I don't know that I can separate the sentimentality from my opinion).

For what it's worth ...

You're not alone. I thought it was a horrible, pointless film. Glad I checked it out from Netflix. Saved myself $25.

For those that are interested, Amazon has some CC stuff on sale, mostly Wes Anderson related though:

Snagged The Friends of Eddie Coyle and Classe Tous Risques for $33.

Stupid question: have Criterion released any Paramount-licensed material since the WB/Paramount distribution deal began?

Criterion thanks you for your purchase anyway.

Speaking of Oshima, I desperately need to get back on hulu so I can see Empire of Passion.
