I've always been a huge fan of Rio Bravo, and it's probably my second favorite John Wayne movie behind Stagecoach.

Rio Bravo is such a fun and good-natured movie, and I love the grumpy, but heartfelt camaraderie between John Wayne (Chance), Dean Martin (Dude), and Walter Brennan (Stumpy) in the Sheriff's quarters. There's an engaging buildup of tension that pays off nicely with a solid gunfight.

John Carpenter's best movie, Assault on Precinct 13, is basically modeled after Rio Bravo, and it updates the story's concept to a Los Angeles run down by street gangs.

Last, but not least... Angie Dickinson is at her most beautiful and most enjoyable in Rio Bravo.

It's not one that looks good to me on paper, what with Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, and Angie Dickinson -- I'm not a fan of any of them (except Nelson as a singer) -- but I enjoy it a hell of a lot just the same.

Looking forward to whatever other westerns Criterion decides to release.
Westerns have been an under-represented genre when it comes to Criterion. In their 15 years of releasing laserdiscs, they only did three Westerns: High Noon, Silverado, and (if one wants to count it as a Western; I do) Bad Day at Black Rock. That's assuming you don't want to count several of Kurosawa's samurai films as Westerns.

They didn't release any Westerns on DVD (same caveat as above) until Ride with the Devil and Stagecoach came out on both DVD and Blu-ray in 2010. And since then, they've only released three more -- Jubal, 3:10 to Yuma, and Heaven's Gate -- until today's release of Red River.

We finished Riot in Cell Block 11 and unfortunately it is one of the rare Criterion movies I've bought and I didn't care for.

It's only 4 out of 65, so those are good odds.

It did find the second half better than the first, but over all I just left it thinking it was a competently made B-Movie, too heavy on its message and failing to be particularly interesting.

A shame, because I was looking forward to it.

Normally I think Walter Brennan is great but his performance here is something more appropriate for Blazing Saddles. It's almost as if Hawks said "Walter, I want you to put all your sidekick performances together and give me the biggest, broadest, performance you got!" Sleepy-eyed Ricky Nelson as a fast gun is awful and Angie is beautiful, with great legs, but I think it's a contest between her and Ricky as to who gives the more amateurish performance.
Like I said-I've given it lots of chances but it just doesn't click and I'm someone who grew up watching westerns and love the genre.

It's on my list (Rio Bravo) but I haven't watched it yet. I do however own and really enjoyed El Dorado. I believe they're basically the same movie but just by name value alone, El Dorado seems to have a much better cast. Instead of Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson you have Robert Mitchum and James Caan? Heck yes!

What with Hawks's Rio Bravo and Rio Lobo (and John Ford's Rio Grande) I always felt that Red River would've been better titled Rio Rojo.

It looks as though I'm all alone in the world with my love of Riot in Cell Block 11. I love this kind of old-school noir awesomeness.

Yesterday, I mentioned that I'm finishing up the fifth season of The Twilight Zone, where Don Siegel directed two episodes. Last night, I watched the episode, "The Encounter", which stars Neville Brand, who was so amazing in Riot in Cell Block 11, and none other than George Takei, years before he starred in the Star Trek series and many many years before he became the apparent curator of over-shared Facebook memes.

Nelson's casting in Rio Bravo is pretty brutal; thankfully Hawks seems to recognise that half way through and his character gets more and more marginalised until he's an afterthought at the end. Rio Bravo's definitely pretty good but I don't really understand the extreme love it often gets. Pales in comparison to Red River which I definitely think is my favourite Hawks film.

You're not alone. I haven't bought RiCB11 yet but I remember it fondly from tv viewings. It'll be a purchase at one of the 50% off sales.

An episode that was never shown in syndication in the US*, because many Japanese-Americans complained about it being racist upon its original airing so it was never included in the regular syndication package.

* Although I remember KTLA Channel 5 in L.A., who used to always do a full-day marathon of TZ episodes every year on Thanksgiving and Christmas in the 80's eventually did show it one year during the marathon and touting it as an episode not seen in years.

And yeah, In the Realm of the Sense can be kind of tedious and hard to watch but so was something like The Days of Wine and Roses . Movies about self-destructive behavior can get uncomfortable and the self-destructive behavior itself can get pretty boring.

In fact, that's usually one of the main paths in drug/alcohol films - the appeal of behavior that initially seems cool or fun or edgy quickly wears off and becomes first tedious and then ugly.

I'm not necessarily saying In the Realm of the Senses is a great movie but it's pretty good. It's not the best addiction movie but it's one of the better ones and off the top of my head I can't think of a better sex addiction movie (Shame didn't even come close).
I agree with iscottie I didn't like In the Realm at all. Sex Just felt like over kill with not much dialogue. The feel of the movie left me flat. Leaving Las Vegas is equally depressing but I loved it so idk what the deal was...

I'm thinking that this was one of the "lost" episodes that Showtime ended up showing in the 1980s. One of the other ones I remember was "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", which was originally a French short film that Serling really liked, and acquired the rights to show it as a TZ episode. But only on the network; the rights didn't extend to syndication. While the film/episode was shown frequently over the years, Showtime's airing was the first time in 20 years that it was shown with the TZ credits and Serling introduction.

The other episode I remember from Showtime was "Miniature", with Robert Duvall. It wasn't actually a "lost" episode, but the dollhouse sequences were colorized. While I'm generally loathe to say much positive about colorization, it was actually quite effective in this instance.

Recently watched El Dorado as well and really enjoyed it. The chemistry between all three of the characters is spot on. I feel that Rio Bravo tends to overshadow Rio Bravo, however in my opinion, both are equally as good.

I consider 'The Furies' a very good Anthony Mann western.

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a highlight of Season Five for me, along with "Night Call", which, as others have mentioned, was directed by Jacques Tourneur.

I first saw "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" when my 10th grade English teacher showed the non-Sterling-narrated film to the class back in 1988. I became a huge fan of Ambrose Bierce after that, and I still revisit his complete short stories collection from time to time.

I just finished Season Five. I'll be moving on to the Buster Keaton Collection soon, and on to the Zatoichi set after that.

After going through the very "light" extras, i'm a little surprised by the fact that there is almost no mention of the stink this movie made in the box office.
This is almost like Cimino himself produced the extras.
There is no critic allowed and the people interviewed are all spreading their love for MC.
What CC should have done was to get "Final Cut : The Making and Unmaking" documentary.
That would have made this package complete.
But then they possibly would not have MC commitment to this release

I'm currently watching Thief for the first time. Already love the writing, music, and cinematography. I need more Michael Mann films in my collection.
