Here is are some of my random thoughts.
My wife, who rarely watches "my movies" as she refers to them, watched this with me when TCM Underground showed it some months back. I was quite surprised that she stuck with the whole thing. Afterwards, she left the room shaking her head saying "I don't know, I just don't know." She hasn't watched another one of "mine" since so I assume she didn't like it!

I watched it for the first time yesterday afternoon. It's quite incredible. Isabelle Adjani's performance is sublime.

Pretty much a given at this point. (A recent similar given was The Big Chill.)

PACKAGING PHOTOS

Hello everyone. Here are the promised packaging photos for L'Eclisse and All That Heaven Allows. The review for the latter will be slightly delayed (will be live this weekend) so that we can post a review for A Hard Day's Night late tomorrow night. (More photos in each review).

Have a great Friday everyone

I'm glad to finally see the plastic cases for three-disc releases! Are they pretty much the same size as the one and two-disc plastic cases?

Hi dorothyv

These new cases are just a tiny bit thicker (but really just a little bit).

This might be a silly question but is it the Blu on the left and then DVDs on the right? Or is it Blu and DVD Disc one right, Disc two left? I feel as if the left side disc would be more compromised to damage

Look closely at the photos for both titles. It clearly says "DVD Two" on the left-hand disc, and "Blu-ray" on the upper of the two right-hand discs.

You & me both! I have multiple titles that I haven't opened yet because I plan to swap them when I find a better undinged copy. They look nice, but what a pain in the backside to get undamaged.

Oh no what are people going to do about shelf space

I am preferring Ebay to Amazon for ordering, well bidding for a first, getting some pretty sweet deals

I wonder if the new 3-disc cases will be available from places like Casetopia. If Criterion would make the cover inserts available (and at less than the usual $5 a pop), I would like to move all 15 or so of my 3-disc dual format releases from digipaks to plastic cases. If Criterion would provide cover art for Blu-Ray only releases (very unlikely) I wouldn't mind tossing the extra DVDs (never been a fan of the dual format releases !).

Outstanding! Thanks for sharing the photos, Pro-B.

I really enjoyed the Olive Films release of Douglas Sirk's Sleep, My Love, so I'm looking forward to having more of his films.

Owl! Please tell me you haven't only seen one Sirk film!?!?!? He's my single favourite director, you have some wonderful experiences ahead of you!

I have only ever seen Tarnished Angels, but I found it pretty strong, straight up melodrama for my taste. Would you say that TA is indicative of Sirk's work, or should I add digging into his catalog (in search of more colors) to my list?

(Please keep in mind I'm already behind on my list by about a thousand)

All three of his films in The Criterion Collection are outstanding! I don't see why you (or anyone) won't like them. I hope we see more on Blu-ray from him soon.

I do think Tarnished Angels is a fine film, but I may think of Sirk's well-known films it may have slightly lesser going on under the surface. It's also pretty straight-forward in Sirk's attitude towards the material, whereas some of his others adopt a greater sense of irony and artifice - the three leads are shared with Written on the Wind, which couldn't be a more different film. I don't think TA is shallow by any means, but compare it to say, Imitation of Life and All That Heaven Allows - both are ostensibly much more melodramatic than TA, but I think they're bursting with subtext and for me are slightly richer films. Though the more I think about it, A Time To Love And A Time To Die is making me think that may be his greatest film. Regardless, at the very least even if they don't sound like your cup of tea I think you owe it to yourself at least to experience Sirk in full colour. Pro-b's review is still forthcoming, but I'd hazard a guess and say All That Heaven Allows on blu is going to look pretty spectacular.

Thanks, I appreciate your input. I think I'll see if Sirk pops up on Hulu, and hold off on any more blind buys for the time being. I don't see any, but Hulu search is not great.

To add: And there is nothing wrong with Tarnished Angels in my mind, I think I've heard Sirk named checked so many times over the years I was expecting something else. And melodrama, like avocados, isn't my favorite.
