Hey this is via reddit user /u/rhfan212 (who has constantly gotten these B&N deals right) as he said earlier the sale is going to be July 1st. He just uploaded this picture to confirm. So looks like it is a week earlier than this thread reported and was expecting

You never know; they might extend it a week. I believe they did exactly that last November, which made the Zatoichi Box available for the sale.

And last Summer they didnt push the date of the sale back, but brought The Devil's Backbone out for purchase a week early so it was included in sale.

Has it ever been called "the Criterion Collection Sale"? I thought it was always the art house sale. Unless it's named differently in November.

Not sure, but apparently they may also be allowing the use of coupons, but more on that as the sale date nears

Persona
Fanny & Alexander
Summer Interlude

Just in terms of what's available on Blu-ray.

After watching The Music Room yesterday, I decided to continue on with countries where my knowledge of their cinema is limited or non-existent. I reached into my WCP boxset for Dry Summer today and it's now my favorite of the three from the collection that I have watched. It's a fairly simple tale, but told with such elegance. Ali Uğur's camera is majestic and very forward thinking for the period. What's most striking about the film is Erol Taş' performance. The commitment to such a vile, evil, selfish character is really stirring. I'm definitely eager to see what else Metin Erksan's filmography has to offer.

I found Wild Strawberries to be very accessible, and a good "starter" film for Bergman.

Well, my emotions are in an uproar after watching Umberto D. It's such a powerful film in the sense that it is incredibly depressing yet reaffirming about life.

Can anybody recommend me films similar to this? I also love It's A Wonderful Life and Wild Strawberries where we're shown the hurt and sadness of the main character before being shown the beauty of life.

Thank you!

Obvious ones would be Bicycle Thief and Au Hazard Balthasar but you've probably already seen those. BTW, I love Umberto D as well.

Another "depressing" but fantastic film is Grave of The Fireflies (non-Criterion)

Just bought Fantastic Mr. Fox and In the Mood for Love at B&N to take advantage of their sale.

ITMFL will be a first time view for me. I love Wong Kar-Wai, so I'm excited.

The topic of Bergman and my own fondness for Harriet Andersson makes me hope for an upgrade of Sawdust and Tinsel.
