Circus World isn't the greatest but it's still apart of the Hayworth collection on blu. From the UK and Region B though.

Definitely a no-brainer for me since Weir is, probably, my favorite director. I have had the original dvd (sold it long ago) and I also have the three disc region 2 dvd that has the theatrical cut.

Can't wait to own this title on Criterion blu during the B&N sale where I can also scout out whether the digipak it in good shape.

If Like Someone in Love is indicative of the rest of Kiarostami's filmography, I hope that we never see anything more from him in the CC. I'll have to elaborate later, but in short, I never saw a film go from "hey, this is really really good" to..... well, whatever the opposite of that is.

What what what what what what!?

Kiarostami is a great director from the limited catalogue that I've seen from him. Close-Up is one of the greatest films ever made, in my opinion, and I think both Certified Copy and Like Someone In Love are modern day masterpieces.

Did I miss some announcement about Blu-ray only releases and dual format releases? In reference to the comments above about Blu-ray only coming once a dual format is sold out...

My somewhat random predictions:

Early Summer (need moar Ozu)
Monte Hellman set (The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind)
Tootsie
Spirit of the Beehive
Red Sun (I really hope that's what that new year's clue is for)

I would of course be happy with more Kurosawa, Fellini, and Chaplin.

In addition to the reasons they cite, I imagine that it may have been possible that they lost some business being that sites like eBay offered consumers the opportunity to purchase disc only copies of one format or the other (mostly DVD) at substantial discounts.

I enjoyed the way it not only explored the characters in terms of a general who we are vs what we pretend to be, it added a layer of characters actually pretending to be something else entirely due to the situations that occur during the film.

[Show spoiler]I like how Steven Boone phrased it on Ebert.com. "Kiarostami presents indefinite people with indefinite motivations and desires. The way this film ends is perfect... because it's a bracing slap in the face of not just these characters who have been slumming, pretending and withholding, but to many of us who might be going through life on some kind of autopilot."

I suppose I was referring to
[Show spoiler]the boyfriend a bit but also Akiko and Takashi with the relationship they actually have vs the one they end up pretending to have (Grandfather/Grand daughter).

Why is this page on Criterion:

http://www.criterion.com/people/119692-david-lynch

Am I missing something? Could it be cause Eraserhead is on Hulu?

There's also one for Woody Allen.

Those were created a while ago. Some of them have come true and seen blu-rays.

Ok. Yes, there is something to be said about that.. I haven't given it much thought, so I don't know what that 'something' might be, but I'll give you that much.

I felt that the events in the last hour in the film could have been described on the back of the home video packing. I'll put it in spoiler tags because I am sure there are those who disagree with me, but...
[Show spoiler]a wise old man, revered in society befriends a beautiful prostitute... Okay. and then what? the last hour just serves to establish that much - that the man is respected (consider the encounter w/ his former student at the auto repair shop) and that he is kind (consider the neighbor's confession about wishing that she could have married him.) So what? This certainly wasn't the first movie in the history of cinema to have a sweet prostitute show up for an encounter and then have the man NOT take advantage of her because he sees something sweet and innocent in her.

Kiarostami establishes his tone so wonderfully in the first act of the film. Why does he beat us over the head with it late in the film?!? Case and point:
[Show spoiler]What is established by showing the man fall asleep at the traffic light? What is established by painstakingly depicting the man find her in the alley, leave his vehicle, only to have someone honk at him so that he has to go back into his car and find somewhere to park? Watching paint dry is a tired cliche, but I'm not sure there is another metaphor that is more applicable.

And the ending... the entire film felt like an over extended student film. For me, there was no story. Just style. Beautiful style for the first 30 minutes, but then I feel like he went nowhere with it... had nothing to say. Even his style became a parody of itself.

Sad thing is I dumped a lot of DVDs and then made some smaller, custom packaging for DVDs to make room fro more Criterions. And I've started getting rid of, *GASP*, my slipcovers!! "Say it ain't so Joe!"
