Your best bet with pre-ordering Criterion titles on Amazon is to do it as soon as they're announced, which you'll usually find by following this thread or just checking this site. The pre-order price for most titles has been $27.97 lately, which is the price that Y tu mamá también had when it first went up on Amazon.

Going to dual format releases made sense in theory, but they should have known that movie collectors are not logical creatures.

People forget the biggest benefit of going to separate blu and dvd releases again.

With dual format Criterion seemed to upgrade films which had low inventory on DVD because they didn't want to issue a dual format release if they had tons of DVD's on hand. That's no longer a factor, imo.

Finally, you enjoyed a movie that you didn't set your expectation so high based on reviews and historical critical fanfare that you weren't let down.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. For me, many of Bergman's films, especially The Magician, have a sense of comedy to them that a lot of people don't seem to tap into because they're always focused on the "heavy-handed" nature of his films. I, on the other hand, have always enjoyed the jabs he takes at religion and the flaws of humanity that are so readily apparent in his films, and I think more people could enjoy his films if they would look at them in a different light sometimes, ya know?

For the 50% off sale, my list, thus far, is as follows:

Definite:
Persona
L'Eclisse
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Rififi
Ivan's Childhood

Maybe:
Judex
Red River (the package size is just too bulky for me)

Question: I'm really enjoying the 50's technicolor films; for example: All that Heaven Allows, Charade, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, some of the Hitchcock films in the boxed set, etc. I already have Bigger than Life, The Red Shoes, and Black Narcissus, I just need to make time to watch them.

I especially like the 50's Technicolor that portray small-town America, like The Trouble With Harry and All that Heaven Allows. Are there any more of these in the collection that I'm missing out on?

Charade came out in '63 but your point about technicolor still stands.

My list so far:

Trilogy of Life (Pasolini)
Rossellini-Bergman
Pierre Etaix

Three of the most interesting looking box sets, yet no-one here ever seems to mention them. They'll be blind buys, but solid enough.

Also L'Eclisse, All That Heaven Allows, A Man Escaped and maybe a couple more here and there.

If you're looking for Technicolor films specifically, Criterion has a nice little Themes section if you haven't seen it before, and it includes one for Technicolor films that they've released.

With respect to the upcoming 50% off sale, I'm pretty satisfied with my current collection of existing Criterion titles, but I might spring for Smiles of a Summer Night, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, and the David Lean Directs Noël Coward set. Maybe the John Cassavetes: Five Films set.

The bulk of my 50% off purchases will probably be the July releases.

I couldn't recommend the Cassavetes set more; I love these movies.

This Happy Breed was a pleasant surprise and looks great in hi-def. But, that is in the Lean box set only. I like Brief Encounter, too, but my utter disappointment w/ In Which We Serve inclines me to only give the box a luke-warm recommendation.

a film that kinda fits the description of technicolor "small-town America" is Elia Kazan's Wild River which is absolutely gorgeous on blu-ray, features fantastic acting, and tells a uniquely American story. I think Fox is still doing 40% off, so it can be had for $9.60 if it isn't already in your collection. Montgomery Clift, too! for me, at least, that'd be a selling point.

I just about agree with all three posters above. Wonderful film. What a surprise! Reflecting back upon it, however, I am not sure how frequently I'd watch it had I bought it.

just pure entertainment from start to finish.. the type of movie during which you think to yourself, "this can not possibly get any better, can it?" and then it does.

I've got it ranked as my #3 CC title out of 65.

how did you like In Which We Serve and Blithe Spirit? IWWS kinda beats you over the head w/ its British patriotism. A theme that is kinda revisited in Bridge On The River Kwai, but it is nowhere near as distracting... or I should say, it isn't the central point of the film.
