I don't know if it's been mentioned (I went back several pages in this thread) but Costco has about a dozen Criterions BDs on sale at $19.99. Mostly the 30's and 40's Alfred Hitchcock and Wes Anderson titles although I did see a few others like "Blow Out." Be aware that there were only 1 or 2 copies of each title available at the Costco I was at (Huntington Beach, CA).

I feel your pain. I have about 10 DVD's on my wishlist. Most are never mentioned around here so I doubt there's little chance of an upgrade anytime soon.

I'm going to buy a few DVD's during the B&N sale. I want to watch the films, not hang about in case a BR is released which in all honesty may improve the film quality slightly. I won't let that get in the way of the film itself.

I watched Black Moon a couple of nights ago. That was a weird one! I was surprised I hadn't already seen it since I seem to love surreal coming-of-age stories such as Valerie and Her Week of Wonders and Company of Wolves. This film reminded me of Valerie and Alice in Wonderland, of course.

I can't say the various vignettes in the film added up to something meaningful or successful, but it kept my attention more than anything else I've watched recently - probably because I was having fun anticipating what crazy thing would happen next. Flowers that scream when stepped on? OK. Talking unicorns? Okay... Feral naked children frolicking with a giant pig? Why not? The first scene made me cringe a bit when I saw the car in the distance and knew what was going to happen to that poor armadillo in the road.

Second Spin is an ideal place to pick up used Criterion DVDs. Plus, they've always got a promo code going on. Found Kwaidan on there for $9 the other week.

Very true. I've been pretty lucky so far with buying dvds and not having criterion release a blu ray edition of it. Granted I only have three or four. I would love them to rerelease The Friends of Eddie Coyle. A great 1970s crime film, that I feel doesn't get enough love.

I actually like hearing stories about people buying a DVD and then shortly afterwards a bluray is announced. It's very serendipitous.

I saw Loves of a Blonde for a film history class I saw years ago and have been wanting to get it, but I have the same fear. It's not likely to get an upgrade anytime soon, is it?

On a side note, is there any difference between the 2 versions of it on sale on the Criterion page and at B&N? It seems like there's a normal Criterion version and an Essential Art House version.

I hope so. I finally watched it for the first time earlier this week. It was very confusing, but I really enjoyed it. I'd rank it above Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man as my favorite Lynch film so far.

I actually just finished La Vie de Bohème and I thought it was just okay. I must admit that overall it didn't do much for me. The film is apparently a comedy, but I didn't find myself laughing. In fact, I found it to be more depressing than anything else.

The film is about three lower-class individuals struggling to survive on barely any income due to their difficult professions in the arts (one is a painter, one is a writer, and the other is a musician). The three individuals come together by chance and form a friendship. I would say that more than anything else, the film is a piece on humanity. Even with minimum funds at their disposal, the three friends find a way to help each other out instead of keeping the money all to themselves.

Hope this helps!

It's my favorite of his films too, but my appreciation for Lost Highway grows with each viewing. I think MD does suffer a bit for its origin as a TV pilot. LH doesn't have this problem, but MD works on your emotions in a way LH doesn't. A big part of the reason is that MD has a far more sympathetic character as the lead.

Both Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive have solid Blu-ray editions in Japan (as does Eraserhead). I've purchased MD four times already - the DVD, then the HD DVD, then the UK BD and finally the Japanese BD. I would likely also buy a Criterion edition because it's such an amazing film. It would be nice if Criterion could find a way to include the original TV pilot as an extra - that would definitely give them an edge over the other editions that are out there.

The films I mentioned are the only ones I've seen (3 total), but I'm interested in continuing to explore more of his filmography. Eraserhead intrigues me, I have Wild at Heart coming in the mail, and I have yet to see Twin Peaks. Lost Highway sounds interesting too. Since I just saw Mulholland Drive, I can wait a little while before deciding whether to import, but with the recent announcement of Eraserhead by Criterion, I am hoping they will release it within the next year. I don't know if it's possible to include the original pilot but if so that would make a great extra!

Scanners Blu-ray REVIEW

It is a solid release from Criterion, with some very good new supplemental features. The supervised high-definition transfer, however, will probably inspire some interesting discussions because it has little in common with the ones used for Region-B releases. I personally like it quite a lot.

(Very interesting disc menu ).

Thats some pretty drastic difference. Sometimes I wonder how much "approved" really means. Never saw it in theaters but a grey brown sky compared to blue is just....odd.
