It is a solid release from Criterion, with some very good new supplemental features. The supervised high-definition transfer, however, will probably inspire some interesting discussions because it has little in common with the ones used for Region-B releases. I personally like it quite a lot.

(Very interesting disc menu ).

Is this the disc menu?

Lots of great picks there! If you don't already own Anatomy of a Murder you should definitely get that one as well. It makes a fantastic double feature with 12 Angry Men.

Also, I know Wes Anderson is the most polarizing CC topic on here (excluding people's personal thoughts on Roman Polanksi), but I really enjoyed his movies. I think The Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite, but they're all enjoyable.

From this week's Criterion Hulu piece:
Quote:
We’ve also chosen a title from Kazakhstan: Ermek Shinarbaev’s 1989 drama Revenge, about a boy bred and raised solely for the purpose of avenging his brother’s death. This film was restored by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project and is not yet available on disc in the U.S.
Maybe reading between the lines a bit strongly but I'd say it's a very likely candidate for this year's World Cinema Project box set.

This title, as well as Law of the Border, are on Hulu with the special World Cinema Project box-art.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

I wonder if we'll see the second set this year or next.

Considering Revenge was already on the first MOC set, I would imagine it's a definite for the next Criterion set.

Hello Polaroid,

I just read your question. The screencapture member smoss469 posted is from the menu, but the face actually moves (parts of it).

I don't want to spoil it for you so when you get the disc you will see for yourself

It's not just approved...it was supervised by Cronenberg. Which actually means more.

Already own the UK Scanners but will be picking up the CC for Stereo alone. A different transfer and awesome artwork is always a bonus!

Thanks for the Scanners review!

I was wavering on this one a little, but I've taken a liking to revisiting some of the 1980s "second tier" horror-edged movies lately by way of Scream Factory (Cat People, Lifeforce, etc.), and, although it's been a while since I last saw Scanners, I know that it falls somewhere along those lines. It'll make for a heck of a fun late night movie.

On an unrelated note...

I'll be saving my viewing of Picnic at Hanging Rock, L'Eclisse, and All That Heaven Allows for next weekend, since I've got some Twilight Time stuff that I'm enjoying first. I actually took a break from watching movies this week and haven't watched anything since last Monday. I do this a couple times a year to finishing reading books on my list and just to recharge, in a sense.

I've accepted that I'm never getting caught up. Right now, just on my desk I have...

2 Seasons of Breaking Bad
31 Movies
3 Boxed Sets. (Total of 35 movies there)

This doesn't include the 2nd half of the massive Universal Abbot & Costello set, the Zatoichi CC set and other misc. sets in my closet.

If I include other movies on a shelf, it's probably closer to 50 movies plus the boxed sets.

I'll just try to chip away at it, but to get caught up I'd have to probably miss a week of work or more

Stop buying. Save the money and hit the sales again at the end of the year.

At least 50% of that was the result of gifts, not buying. I had a birthday last month, before that, an anniversary in April. That's where a lot of it came from.

Obviously "stop buying" is a solution, but buying isn't the main problem.

Friends of Eddy Coyle is one of my favorite Criterions, with excellent liner notes. IMHO this is a quintessential '70's crime drama; Robert Mitchum is excellent, as are all of the supporting actors, including Peter Boyle. Though the whole film is superb, the brief dialogue & scene at the very end is especially well-done....

Foreign Correspondent is my 100th Criterion on Blu-ray

P.S. I'm looking to buy The Third Man, what price do they actually go for? I don't care if it's used, as long as in good condition.
