I don't have an issue with the Lynch thing, but this just isn't accurate. State censorship is a form of censorship, not the definition of it.

most beautiful film and the best soundtrack that i could imagine for such a movie. since i own the criterion bluray i watched the movie at least 4 times and the bonus features twice. i went trough the booklet many times as well.
Wong Kar Wai's best movie , and probably a nice start as well to get to know the directors work.

reading such reviews makes me really sad. (but that was probably to be expected by someone that rates Mortal Combat with 4/5 Stars...

In the Mood for Boredom and Annoyance

Unlike "Chunking Express" which is eminently watchable, this movie is unbelievably boring to watch and I could not make it through the entire picture before I gave it the proverbial "gong." On top of the boredom you'll experience watching is a subtle flowing annoyance- the theme song that pumps for this movie continuously and makes you want to claw your proverbial eyes out. Almost makes me wish Criterion had brought us Armageddon on blu ray instead. Almost.

If you own and like The Thin Red Line, then I'd say Days of Heaven is an extremely safe pick up. Been ages since I've seen it and will be buying it myself. Can't wait to give it a look again.

I'd be tempted to outright dismiss a review like his just for the fact that "proverbial" is used twice in the same paragraph. Not to mention that In the Mood is one fantastic film.

Anyone suggesting they would rather have had Armageddon on Blu-ray in the Criterion Collection over In The Mood For Love is either making a joke or simply doesn't have as good of an appreciation for Wong Kar Wai. In The Mood for Love is a masterpiece.

don't waste the emotion. name a movie. any movie. and I will find you some pathetic moron who went to the internet to post his/her sucky opinion for all the world to see. even though the opinion you referenced does suck, there is some semblance of control of the English language. I've seen a lot worse. many times, such opinions say far more about the person than they do about the film being critiqued.

This made me laugh out loud! So true

As for The Thin Red Line, I enjoyed it, mainly for the visual (obviously) beauty of the film and Zimmer's score, but I was thrown off because it is not a typical war film at all. I didn't get a whole lot out of it story wise. But there are some fantastic cinematic sequences in it. I think with Malick I'm always sort of halfway. I never hate his films but I don't love them either. When I watched Tree of Life I was thinking the same thing, I'm not getting much out of it story wise, and I knew I was going to hate this movie. But the visuals were incredible and there were some good individual scenes in it. I did feel some emotional catharsis, though it could have been stronger. I think that was my first Malick movie. Days of Heaven is on Netflix instant but I see it recommended here so often and I've seen a few Malick movies that I thought I'd just consider a blind buy.

I'm usually just a lurker and love reading what the regular posters have to comment but I felt I needed to express myself about this issue of In the Mood for Love. I watched it a few weeks ago for the first time on blu-ray and absolutely loved it. Every frame was a delight, the music amazing and I felt like having some wonton soup.

I kinda felt the same way about ToL.. I didn't outright hate it and there were things that I admired about it, but I don't feel the same as many others do about it.

Malick's two movies made in the 70's which unmistakably bear his signature style are, to me, completely different animals. They are both very special films. I like what Ebert said in his snippet that is posted on rottentomatoes.com:

"This is a movie made by a man who knew how something felt, and found a way to evoke it in us."

High praise. You can't really go wrong with something like that. Ebert knew how to praise a movie and could articulate it really well and in a way different from others. He was smart when it came to that.

TToL is my favourite film ever, (as is Antichrist).

Its a stunningly beautiful film, so much depth to it, the score is incredible.

I just wish we could get/see the 6 hour cut for more character development.

I've said it before, but I much prefer Malick's Lubezki films. I think his sensibilities are articulated better and the approach to narrative offers an overwhelming emotional impact (for me, at least.)

I just wish his preferred cut of The New World was on Blu.

I agree completely, his early films are incredible, but I just find his later work more emotional and powerful, Lubezki creates incredible imagery - him and Malick were born to work with each other.

I would love to see TNW on Criterion too :P - seeing as Thin Red Line didn't get extended cut for Criterion, I doubt TTOL or TNW would if they were to be released sadly.. but here is hoping..!

i still have to watch Days of Heaven (got the bluray since a year or so ) , and To the Wonder (since it was released in my collection). and i feel like i should revisit badlands.. got the criterion but have never watched the bluray...only a TV rip years ago

i have to be in the mood for his movies. i love them, but cant watch the randomly...
same goes for a lot of Lars V. Trier Movies.. (antichrist , melancholia...)

to each their own, but TToL feels like the work of art an auteur creates after really believing what everyone has said about how great he/she is.

it probably has more artistic value than the album I am about to reference, but to me, it's the film equivalent to Oasis's album Be Here Now.

My thoughts exactly. I also saw In the Mood for Love for the first time a few weeks ago, and my mind was racing around it for the next couple of days.

Just found out Leos Carax's Mauvais Sang is on Netflix. Finally. Been wanting to see this ever since I watched Holy Motors.
