Tree of Life is a film you either love or hate - I understand that and respect that its not everyones cup of tea. I just can get enough of it, easily have watched sit 100-200+ times, god knows ho many times I have listened to the soundtrack, its breathtakingly powerful! I am obsessed haha!

Started watching Under The Skin - LOVE the intro sequence, and really digging the real people/hidden camera side of it - scarlett johansson really does feel like an alien, she has really taken that form, she just doesn't seem human.

Been listening to soundtrack for a while now - I'm in love with it, can't believe how old the guy who did it is, very talented, such a haunting and atmospheric soundtrack.

I'd like to give it another try some time. The science experiment scene was extremely off putting. Maybe if I went into it a second time knowing how long it would last and that it will soon pass.. maybe then it won't ruin the movie. Wasn't particularly fond of how it wrapped up either.

I watched Häxan off of TCM last night. It's a Swedish/Danish silent horror film from 1922. It's structure is that of a series of 7 vignettes and it starts out like a history lesson of witchcraft through the ages (hence the title of the 1968 re-release). Literally there are woodcuts and engravings where specific drawings are directed to by a pointer stick. As the film moves on it turns to live acted out segments. All I can say is what a strange little film this is. And it must have been shocking in its day. The scenes with Satan alone probably disturbed people, but nowadays it's actually quite funny. There are several laughs to be had in this, and moments of WTF-ery. The makeup though is surprisingly good. I liked the sets, and combined with the color tints, there are some fantastic visuals to behold. The final shot is just awesome, followed by a cut to a title card which when read in English just makes for a hilarious transition. I'll admit I'm not big on silent films, but being that this is horror I had to check it out, plus being in the Criterion Collection. If you are into silent and horror, this definitely comes recommended. As someone who reviewed the film online said, it's one of the earliest horror films and documentary types, and it could also be seen as one of the earliest exploitation movies in that it used an educational stance to explore more sensational subject matter. It definitely works as a curiosity, and in that frame of mind, you'll enjoy it. Still, as with many silent movies, I found myself to be uninterested at times and felt the film could be shorter. I actually thought I was watching the shorter re-release with the jazz score as TCM stated, but the score did not sound like jazz and the film went on longer than 74 minutes. TCM lied. I was watching it late and didn't expect that so I was a little put off by that too. I'd be interested in watching the shorter cut. This is a movie that I feel would be great with a humorous commentary.

Terrence Malick is one of the greats of the cinema.

He possesses the unique ability to capture and convey raw emotion and meaning through the use of imagery. Dialogue is not entirely necessary in his body of work because each is reminiscent of a poem that gracefully plays out on the big screen.

In order to experience the beauty of life, one must seek solace in those often hidden and reflexive spaces and I feel Malick captures such areas in fine detail in into each and every one of his films.

Whether it be a war epic or a film about two lovers separated by the unknown, Malick manages to tap to the roots of human emotion.

I did but sad to say that I stopped after about 8 seconds, it gave away what I call a spolier The film is on my shelf so it will be watched in the next few months.

The creation sequence? it's 22 minutes I believe.

it my favourite part of the film - Lacrimosa is so powerful, put against those stunning space images just creates incredible cinema, so simple yet so emotional.

The voice over of the mother and the beautiful sequences by Douglas Trumbell omg.... Be right back need to watch TTOL again! ahhh >.<

On another note - UNDER THE SKIN - half way in and MY GOD its incredible, so haunting and eering, NEED this on bluray - it just INCREDIBLE >.<!

He show love and care so well on screen, its so natural and beautiful, the sequence when the mother and father were embracing each other in TTOL, on the grass and in the dark room with a single light, pure beauty and love - it doesn't feel forced like other films, it doesn't need words to explain who they feel, its all their in the image.

some beautiful moments:

The power and emotion captured in these sequences is just mind blowing, make me want to cry I'm so overwhelmed >.<!

I'm fine with the bulk of the film, although I don't connect with it as you or others do. I don't think the manner in which he depicts "love and care" is entirely original. It is reminiscent of everything from a Norman Rockwell painting to a commercial for cotton.

when you say it "doesn't feel forced"... I can not think of another stretch of film that comes off with more self awareness than the "formation" scene. natural, effortless, simple... none of those words describe that scene at all when you consider the conceptualizing, filming, and editing of that sequence.

I meant the love and care between the characters doesn't feel forced, it feels natural and real.

Its not of everyone, and thats fine, we all appreciate different things - there is just something about this film that click with me and effects my emotions and really reaches out to me.

And hey, whats wrong with a film looking at other art forms for inspiration/ideas, I think its brilliant when they reach out and celebrate other forms

I recently watched "Ivan's Childhood", "The Devil's Backbone" and "Chungking Express". I really like the atmosphere in "The Devil's Backbone". I found "Chungking Express" a little more difficult to like than the other two, but it is a good movie though. I will certainly rewatch it.

What did you think of Ivan's Childhood?

I very much enjoyed The Devil's Backbone, so much so that I bought the Criterion yesterday.

I remember watching The Tin Drum on showcase when I was smaller and thinking what an odd movie it was. I kinda want to revisit it since I see criterion has released it on blu.

Also those Three Reasons videos on the criterion YouTube channel really make me want to blind buy all their movies.

I have not seen that movie yet, but I really should.

It doesn't seem exactly like my cup of tea, but I won't know until I watch it.

Their April Fool's Three Reasons for Kindergarten Cop made me want to go out and get Kindergarten Cop.

They really do have a knack for those.

Yeah, I wonder what channel would actually show that movie nowadays. Maybe IFC.

Yeah, they are pretty good. I mean I've rented some movies because of them so that's pretty good.
