I've been away from the board for like a week, and I don't want to read the 20 some pages I'm behind, so please bear with me if any of the questions I post have already been covered.

The Posters on the Criterion website all say "Limited Edition". How limited are we talking? I have a $50 coupon from Criterion, and I want to get the Vivre Sa Vie and Pierrot Le Fou posters, but I was trying to wait till another discount code pops up. Think they will still have them?

Any more word on the limited edition 50th anniversary Breathless t-shirts?

Anybody think any Melies could come to Criterion? Blu or dvd, doesn't matter. Or point me in the direction of some quality releases from another company.
Also wondering if StudioCana/MoC/Criterion/Kino would ever release The Cabinet of Dr. Calgari.

Lastly, upon hanging out at Barnes N Noble, I looked at the book "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die". Flipping through the pages, there are lots of movies on the list that Criterion has put out. I just ordered it and would love to hopefully see most, if not all films on the list.

There is no right or wrong answer here. I appreciate the comment and follow up as it gives me a little more insight.
Thanks. I understand that Kurosawa is justly revered. I have not seen much of his stuff, but what I've seen of his earlier black and white movies interests me a lot more. I do intend to investigate more of his 'modern' black and white output.

I recently picked up Ran on bluray but have yet to watch it. From what I've read about it, it should be interesting. Of course, picture quality on this one would not match that of Criterion's Kagemusha blu.

I'd be interested to know what other folks think about Kagemusha. Is it one of Kurosawa's less accessible movies?

you have now made me do what i swore i wouldn't do..dip into region free blus from places other than the states, i thought it would help me contain my constant spending...but alas, it has begun and i'm stoked. because of criterion's brakhage set, i'm re excited about avant garde cinema, thus i got keen's stuff and the kenneth anger set that BFI offers...
thanks...i think!

It is a wonderful world, with plenty of wonderful films to be had. Explore it.

As cliche as it may sound, really, there has never been a better time to be a film-collector

1. I don't know how "limited" the posters are, but they had them for a while. They sold out last year, but got more and now back on the website. So I am sure they can sell-out, but I think the majority of people who wants them already got them, so they should be safe. I don't see them running out anytime soon.

2. I want to know about the Breathless shirts as well. I have been looking everywhere. Also note, that I believe these are made by fashion designers (for women) and their stuff is alot of money, so I don't know if these will be girls only or alot of money (hundreds). I hope there is guy shirts and cheap.

3. Kino has The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It's on dvd but no news on blu yet.

I actually fall somewhat into the minority in that I prefer his latter color films over his more popular early black & white films (which he made quite a few of). I think he took more chances with some of the stories he chose to do and his overall style felt more mature...

I for one, think Kagemusha is his best, and I first saw it many, many years ago, when I didn't appreciate film as I do today. I have it on blu, just waiting for the right 3 hours to sit uninterrupted and go thru it again

I saw Ran before Kagemusha and loved the film. Loved how it was like a perfect blend of something Shakespear would have done, with something Kurosawa has done, and right from the beginning of the film I was interested in seeing how it'd all pan out.

With Kage I suppose I was expecting the same kind of thing but never really got it. I was expecting something to happen, that never really happened. I would like to think I missed something early in the film, causing a ripple effect through the rest of the movie, but it was a long and slow ride from what I remember. I do plan on revisiting the movie though, might form a different opinion afterwards.

Nice! That reminds me that I still need to open my copy. I also bought Empire of Passion with it but I am not for sure if I should watch it first or last...

I would say almost all of Kurosawa's films are pretty accessible. While his samurai films are obviously great, my favorite Kurosawas are probably Red Beard, Ikiru and Rashomon. Of his color films I prefer RAN and some parts of Dreams (which needs a blu-ray release even if only for the two opening sequences about the foxes and the peach orchard. Oh and the Van Gogh sequence would look pretty stunning in HD as well.)

I for one am hoping that they pick something out of the ordinary for Kurosawas next Blu Ray. I would love to have The Lower Depths, The Bad Sleep Well, or even Drunken Angel before Seven Samurai.

I know I am probably in the minority, but just about every film Kurosawa made I consider a masterpiece. That says a lot about the man.

That's a bit like how I felt about it when I saw it all those years ago (although I hadn't seen Ran beforehand). It's probably timely for me to give it another go.

i'm the biggest AK fan (i think only from watching just a handful of his films: 7 Sam, Ran (recently), Hidden Fortress, Rashomon. i have the AK25 boxset and all the rest of his 31 films (even the 'disowned' one). so one of these days, i plan to go through them all chronologically

Got the Herzog set in today and it IS region A... so I'm assuming region-free, but if not, then at least Region A & B.
