I could also live in a castle or on a boat. Sadly, I'm Region A only. No region-free player in the near future either. Plus, I'm saving my money for the upcoming sale. Christmas in July!

A very good investment if I may say so, worth sacrificing a few purchases to pay for it.

I snatched a copy because it looked great. Haven't received any shipping notification yet but I'm hoping it'll be in the mail soon.

So finally have the evening to myself, wife is at work, time to break out some unwatched Criterions.

First up was Life Aquatic. This was an upgrade for me, but started with it as I hadn't seen the blu-ray release yet. Needless to say, I love it. The movie looks and sounds great. I won't spend much more time on it, since I don't want to start a Wes Anderson shouting match in here.

Next, which is just starting, is Seconds. I am very excited about this film. It was a blind buy for me, based on some suggestions here a while back... I think it was Great Owl during a discussion of noir. This is my first John Frankenheimer film, and unbelievably my first Rock Hudson film as well. I'll post about it when I'm done.

Hoping to watch Vampyr afterwards... figure it'll be nice night cap. Or maybe I'll start the Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr., that'll be a nice midnight movie kind of end.

Anyway, loking forward to the BN sale as well, though I'm broke so may only get 1 or 2 titles, if at all.

How random are the Criterion flash sales? I bought a bunch from their last sale and I'm thinking of holding out until the next one. But I'd like to get a ball park time frame if possible. The last one was in February, do they have them twice a year?

Very recently there was the dog one that was a quote from Macbeth.

The Criterion clue was obviously for M. Night's Unbreakable.

I kid, sort of, but I would actually be someone thrilled if that were the case.

Had no idea that Jerry Goldsmith did the score for Seconds, nor that Oscar Goldman himself was the doctor in the film. Loving this movie so far...

Late September/early October would be the next likely Flash sale based on the past two years.

For my Canadian brethren: Piņa and Blue Is The Warmest Color are on Netflix. If you didn't know that this will be news but if you already did...well...what would you recommend I watch first? That question is for anybody in the forum.

Blue is the Warmest Color is an absolutely incredible film.

I finally sat down and watched this yesterday. It was a really interesting film. I really enjoyed the story, and the relationships, but I was a little let down. I think my expecations were way to high after all the hype. I did like how he let the story develop over a long period of time, but at times it did feel like to was dragging a little. Overall though, I enjoyed it, and may give it another viewing in the near future.

On another note, I finished Seconds and Vampyr tonight. Both movies were quite incredible. Seconds was a amazing thriller, with an excellent performance by Rock Hudson. I was amazed by how quickly I was drawn into his life and how quickly it turned into what felt like a Twilight Zone life.

And Vampyr was just as enjoyable. What I loved most though was/is the packaging. It is amazingly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. I was almost a little too creeped out, so much so that I had second thoughts about starting the movie at 11:30pm. But so glad I did. Just an incredible film.

Every year I always hope that Vampyr gets announced for a BLU upgrade for the month of October. Also the commentary track is very informative and worth a listen. I think I've listened to it several times over the years.

Definitely Blue is the Warmest Color. It's one of the freshest coming-of-age stories in recent memory and it gets better and better with each subsequent watch.

I was lucky enough to attend the Rhode Island premiere of the film last November and for a three hour movie, the time sure flew by fast. I'm really looking forward to the Special Edition Extended Cut which will hopefully be released before the year is over.

I didn't find the main character all that interesting and really never connected emotionally with him. I had also been considering it as a B&N purchase but saw it on Hulu Plus first and decided to pass.
Interesting, that's how I felt as well. I thought the archival footage was the cream of the crop and definitely more interesting than the studio footage. I think the editing was sharp and seamless though. Some of that 35mm footage of the war is just amazing, esp. those shots of the soldiers crashing their boats along the shoreline at Normandy (or at least in training) and the Great Panjandrum that was like a giant wheel crashing onto the shore coming towards the camera man. Amazing stuff. Seeing the "real thing" was a revelation while watching this story of the young soldier from Britain.

The footage of the otherworldly and terrifying machines that were employed to sweep mines and such during the beach invasions is masterfully juxtaposed with the idyllic studio footage of the main character. I can understand why others do not warm up to the film, but I've always found it to be intensely engaging.
I have to add that it was indeed an effective story of one soldier's unfortunate demise in a great big war. The dehumanizing aspect was so dreadful. I think Overlord is a decent film but I wouldn't call it a "lost masterpiece" by any means.

I'd really like to see Criterion buy the rights to the RCA Red Seal version of Alexander Nevsky - with the musical score re-recorded in stereo - and issue a blu ray. Anyone else?
