And Vampyr was just as enjoyable. What I loved most though was/is the packaging. It is amazingly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. I was almost a little too creeped out, so much so that I had second thoughts about starting the movie at 11:30pm. But so glad I did. Just an incredible film.
I also really like both these films. I first saw Vampyr ages ago on my local tv station in it's Saturday night horror film time slot and was just transfixed by it. I just loved the look of it and the minimal dialogue and score. It just seemed so otherworldly. I liked it so much that I got a Super 8 sound copy of it. Yes, this was in the pre-VHS days when home video consisted of 8 or 16mm film.
Seconds is such a ballsy film considering when it was made and it's so damn grim for something with a major studio label. Plus B&W? Rock Hudson?? All really going against the grain of what would make box office sense in '66. I must say that as good as Hudson is in this; and he's terrific, John Randolph is amazing as the before character because he has to set the stage with his frustrations and failures for Hudson's after character. Incredible film.

I really want more Wong Kar Wai from Criterion. I doubt they can release As Tears Go By or Days of Being Wild, pretty sure Kino have the rights to those. However I would LOVE for them to release 2046. Sony licences their titles out all the time and they have a partnership of sorts with Criterion, who clearly like WKW.

Vampyr has some of the coolest and most eerie visuals in the entire Criterion Collection. I'm stunned at how they were able to employ the transparent figures and such so well in a movie of that age. The DVD package is so beautiful that I will probably keep it even if the movie is upgraded to Blu-ray someday.

I've often considered using the below image from the movie as an avatar...

Just finished Three Colors: Blue, which I wasn't super into -- the full trilogy was on TCM this week so the next two are waiting on my DVR! Each one is short enough so I'll stick with em even if I don't end up liking them.

Blue is my least favorite from the Trilogy, although I think all three are excellent.

Stick with them.

Blue is my favorite. All three are excellent, though... I do agree with that. This is one of the best and most unique film series ever made.

Tbh I saw a clip from a western which brilliantly filmed - not sure what film but its 3 guys in a shoot out or something in a triangle, and the camera does a close up on each face in sequence, then close up of gun and you see subtle whitens in their eyes as to who they will shoot...

It was brilliant but I don't know it - Westerns are just too dusty and twangy for me to like :/

I generally don't like Westerns either... sometimes I encounter a Western I enjoy but for the most part it simply isn't one of my favorite genres. Meanwhile, one of my favorite genres is sci-fi/fantasy, which I am positive is not for everyone. I'm sure almost everyone has a genre or two they don't like that much when compared to other favorite genres.

Same. I go back and forth between White and Red as my favorites. They're about equal.

I go back and forth between all three. Plus, Preisner's score in Blue is just fantastic.

Have seen only Blue and Rouge in my teens.
But the trilogy is in my wishlist.

And i don't know what release to buy.
I will have to choose between the 5.0 tracks of the Artificial Eye, or the more bonus content (especially the Preisner interview that I'm interested in) of the Criterion.

What you just nonchalantly described is probably the most epic scene in Western cinema, period. It's the final scene to Sergio Leone's The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, scored by Ennio Morricone's "The Trio."

Criterion.
most AV-receivers these days are able to "upscale" stereo sound pretty good. many times i compared stereo tracks and 5.0 tracks of the same disc and didnt notice a difference.
and the three color movies dont have the souround effects of "john rambo"..

i went for the AE release. it was about half the price of the criterion release.

They did an amazing job giving the movie such an eerie, ethereal dream like quality. Some of the sets, especially in the first part (going from memory) have a really cool German Expressionism feel to them as well!
