Hello, It’s been a very busy 12 days since we introduced MUBI, announced our partnership with Sony PlayStation, collaborated with Agnès Varda to show her entire body of work on The Auteurs, run an official short film competition with Cannes, all while covering Cannes in real time and meeting the most important distributors all around the world to sign deals to enrich our library. Now, it’s time to refocus our energies to communicate better with you our roadmap and how we are planning to position The Auteurs vs. MUBI. It’s a long journey, and we are at the very beginning. First, I want to stress that we acknowledge the power of The Auteurs brand and have no intention to let it go. The Auteurs will live and flourish. How? mubi.com and theauteurs.com will be two different urls with two different presentations, but both powered by the same membership, database, and technology. The Auteurs will be a global digital cinema where the world’s best filmmakers meet an international audience. The site will collect and present the bodies of work of established/classic filmmakers (starting with Agnès Varda), as well as giving those filmmakers the opportunity to introduce/program/curate films under their name on the site. Similarly, new works by young filmmakers will be presented as having been selected and endorsed by established filmmakers. The model that simply and concretely defines what The Auteurs is: the world’s best filmmakers showing their films and choosing others they think deserve an audience. theauteurs.com therefore will be an independent url and website simply presenting this uniquely curated VOD content along with appropriate supporting media such as articles written by the filmmakers, video interviews, critical insights, etc. What about MUBI? Where the dynamism and content of The Auteurs comes from filmmakers, that of MUBI comes from the audience. It provides a broader access to cinema; it’s library is significantly larger and less strictly curated. It is the most technologically advanced destination for all things cinema: streaming films, a social network, a discussion group, the latest news and criticism. “You decide what you want to see and we bring it to you at mubi.com.” and MUBI is the platform. You login to The Auteurs to watch films using your MUBI account. Let us know what you think. We hardly get things right the first time, but strive to make this the best destination online for good cinema. /efe And for those who are still upset with the name MUBI, Efe explains how they came up with the name: How did we choose MUBI? As discussed earlier, we decided to change our name theauteurs.com as this was a great brand to launch our platform and bring on the cinephiles, but not ideal to create an entirely new audience and introduce them to great cinema. There are very few people in the world who know what an auteur is. For everybody else, theauteurs is just a complicated name with a lot of vowels coming together that you can’t pronounce. And forget any ambition for launching in Asia (if you don’t agree, ask yourself how much time you spent in Tokyo, Beijing and Seoul). We are committed to sticking with everything that makes theauteurs.com the special place it is. But our name needs to be more accessible to scale. Over the past nine months, we went through a brainstorming exercise and came up with great names. Albeit, we did not know how challenging it would be to get the URL we wanted. Early on, we fell in love with names like peek.com, playtime.com, vertigo.com, blowup.com, steady.com, and 8pm.com. They were all amazing, but we did not know how expensive english word domains are (hundreds of thousands of dollars – flying.com is sold for $1.1 million for example, and that URL is as arbitrary as it gets), and how difficult it is to find something makes sense available (blowup.com is an established media company in Germany, playtime.com is a porn site in Austin, etc.). We bid for 8pm.com and after a month of negotiation we were asked $150,000. cine.com (my favorite URL ever) was available for $2 million. So that was not an option. Then we came up with cineweb.com, kinema.com, cinefair.com, kinoplay.com, etc. which we loved at first, but then ruled out anything with cine, kino, film, etc. in it as it’s overdone – there is hundreds, no exaggeration, film related companies with these type of names and I know we want to create a cult brand. If you were in Cannes last week, you know what I mean. Our brand needs to be special. This all left us with one option – a name with no meaning. A name we can grow and associate with great cinema. And one day, we found it: Mubi. Mubi isn’t necessarily good or bad. It just is. /efe Last edited by kndy; 06-03-2010 at 02:32 PM. |

I'm sure this question has been asked numerous times so I apologize beforehand but... is it worth getting the replacement case for a movie? The only Criterion releases I currently own are Benjamin Button and 400 Blows. I plan on getting many more when I can get them cheap and I do like my collection to look as uniform as possible. Is the $5 worth it? Also, is the process to order the cases the same as is listed on the first page still? I notice that that post was from well over a year ago. Thanks!

Some of you may have an interest in this; The Auteurs (Mubi) forum is having a competition called The Directors' Cup. 128 directors are being managed in a head-to-head film competition. It is a great way to be exposed to films that you maybe would have never watched otherwise. Here is the basic rundown, check it out:

![]() Now that being said, Why would they take directors in a competition? It isn't like they are making the same films or should I say, they are not in the same sport. Stan Brakhage can't compare to Hitchcock. ![]() Why is Antonioni an 8th seed and Cassavetes an 11th seed, while Woody Allen (no hate) and David Lynch (no hate) are 1 seeds? Who thought that up? Oh, and the film for Cassavetes is Minnie & Moskowitz not Minnie & Moscowitz. ![]() Last edited by SpiderBaby; 06-03-2010 at 06:34 PM. |

Just bought replacement cases for The Third Man, 400 Blows, and Last Year at Marienbad. Hope they arrive soon, the Criterion representative on the phone said a week, since they have plenty in stock.
![]() Any word on Seven Samurai, Thin Red Line, Antichrist, Videodrone, or Darjeeling Limited? I watched Antichrist on netlifx instant play the other night. It was basically a meandering mess of a movie that is brilliant for it's first half then the whole second half is so ridiculous that I was totally disengaged and literally laughing out loud at the silliness, and couldn't take any of it seriously. On a technical level, it's a very well made film, the cinematography is stunning, and I'm sure it will look great on Criterion blu-ray. I just wish the narrative had more substance and less cheap shock and awe thrills. Personally, I'd rather watch the Brakhage set, as it's much more meaningful and engaging. ![]() Last edited by neo78956; 06-03-2010 at 06:52 PM. |

All that being said, if Criterion ever gets the rights back to the film and releases it on blu, I would have no hesitations about double-dipping. I'm new to the whole Criterion thing here so if this is an obvious answer I'm sorry. I would like to know has Criterion lost the rights to movies in the past and then re-gained them back later on or is it a case of once Criterion loses it, it's gone for good? |

Just so you guys know, if you haven't seen it in the Hot Deals section, Deep Discount is having an extra 25% off sale and most Criterions are under $25 with free shipping. The code is SAVE25 at checkout. I picked up Contempt for $21, which is the best I have seen it at, but Ride with the Devil was also $21 or so. I put a link to their bluray page below. Just type Criterion in the search to see what they have.
