The point isn't to win, the point is to expose people to works they may not have seeked out on their own. I mean, if I wanted to win, I would have selected Vertigo right off the bat for Hitchcock instead of selecting Shadow of a Doubt like I did. However, I feel like it is a lesser seen Hitchcock film that is one of my favorites and I felt like more people should see it. Hope this clears up some of the confusion.
Oh then I am sorry to respond the way I did. I didn't really read the link, because I thought the basis of the explanation which you gave was enough and the fact that I haven't been to that website since the change.

No worries. None of us are too happy about the name change. The forums have pretty much stayed the same aside from a couple extra trolls and a handful of idiotic topics. Give the Cup a chance, who knows what it'll introduce you to.

I might, though I was never a daily visitor to it in the first place. I got on there from time to time, but haven't since it changed for some reason.

And that Director thing does sound interesting now. At first I just thought it was going to be one of those Director A is better than Director B because he has "cooler" movies or something like that. I have no problem with personal preferences and fav films but lists and rankings suck IMO. But since you explained what this is, it's nothing like what I had in mind.

Just type Criterion in the search to see what they have.

I'm trying to take advantage of this, but their shopping cart doesn't like me or something. I added "M" to my shopping cart, then i clicked continue shopping, added Ride With The Devil, then when it came back to my shopping cart, it only showed R.W.T.D. and "M" disappeared. So of course i thought i just forgot to add it, and added "M" a second time, then when it got to my cart, R.W.T.D. was gone, and only "M" appeared.

If I were to buy 400 blows (or anyone of their earlier films) from the criterion website, would they be selling me the plastic case or the cardboard one? I know you can purchase just the case and artwork for those who have already purchased the cardboard version, but I am curious as to how they sell them in their online store. If anyone has the answer it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Your best bet is to get in touch with Criterion and ask them. Obviously, no one on these boards knows the inventory of the older-style cases that Criterion may still have at their shipping facility in Kentucky. So, I would say contact Criterion 'cause they're the only ones that are going to have any worthwhile insight into the matter.

Pretty likely you will still be getting the cardboard packaging. Outside of The Third Man, I haven't heard of anyone finding any of the films with the initial cardboard packaging in the new plastic cases. Could be wrong though, anyone?

Really??? Do they have good feedback??? That seems like a "Too good to be true" type of thing for a new title coming out, that isn't something that screams "Blind Buy" not to mention it's sealed??????

I ordered the last few Criterion Blu's I don't have from Deep Discount. Of the 6 or 7 titles ordered only Stagecoach and By Brakhage are on backorder. So those two could take awhile.

LOL, well I like Blue Velvet, but that's because Dennis Hopper is in it. I like what Lynch does with surrealism in his films, but the fans he gets for it, knowing there are far better in directors like Buñuel, is funny. Its just I think he is more popular because he is in mainstream America, which is nothing wrong, but popularity always = "greatness". It won't change.

I think the average person in America is going to hear/know about Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, or the Elephant Man before they hear/know about Un Chien Andalou, Diary of a Chambermaid, and That Obscure Object of Desire. Therefore David Lynch = a 1 seed in someones director's tournament. It has nothing to do with the films. Thats why Quentin Tarantino is always going to be more popular than Godard. Spielberg (*cough*hack*cough*) more popular than Kurosawa. Nick Cassavetes more popular than John Cassavetes, yuck!

I am afraid to order anything again on DeepDiscount. Everytime I order from there, it takes close to a month to get it. Last was that Avant Garde Kino set I ordered. Took a month and a couple weeks I believe. Heck by the time my order would come, a B&N 50% off sale will come.

Just picked up Hunger, In The Realm of the Senses, Battleship Potemkin, The General, Fallen Angels and Happy Together for just over $100. The Kino blus are a great deal. The two Wong Kar Wai's for $13.75 each and Battleship Potemkim for $16.

I actually had a few Criterions in my cart but I ended up deleting them and going for the John Ford Silent at Fox box set (since it's always over $40). The reason why is that if bn.com is going to have a 50% off sale in July, some titles that I want like "Make Way for Tomorrow" would be $11.99-$12.99 instead of $18.99 and "The Fugitive Kind" for $17.99 instead of $24.44. Good deal though for getting things that rarely go on sale.

Single titles definitely take forever. So, I noticed that when I order 2-3..they come within a week or two. Although, hopefully you got that Avant Garde!

Yeah I got the Avant Garde, but it took a month and a half it seemed after I ordered it from the Kino deal. I might buy stuff from this sale, it looks like I have a couple weeks to do so.

Yeah, he only has 8 feedback, all positive, but he's been a member since July 2007.
