Ohwell, staring at the cart now and by some odd occurrence, only 1 Blu-ray, the rest are DVDs.

I know that this is hardly an uncommon sentiment, but I still find it surprising somehow every time I hear it. How anyone could not find comedians like Chaplin or Lloyd hysterical is simply beyond me, I suppose.

A lot of silent comedy is slap stick based which gets old QUICKLY. Stunts can carry a movie but not for everyone. A lot of people love comedy but they prefer the dialogue aspect of it.

Nothing Chaplin or Lloyd ever did "got old QUICKLY."

Especially when people actively participate in a criterion thread and call themselves cinephiles.

In your opinion, but the people you can't believe don't like it... some would disagree.

I've got a few silent comedies but I can see why they aren't for everyone.

That guy who pops in every now and then is pretty cool, I've heard

I found with Safety Last!, which I have since sold, that the gags went on too long.

At the risk of being pelted with rotten fruit, I cannot stand Jacques Tati. I have watched M.Hulot's Holiday which scored 3/10 and Playtime which was never finished due to it being one of the most idiotic, unfunny experiences ever.

Put my B&N order in for:
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox
  • Foreign Correspondent *
  • Monsieur Verdoux *
  • Quadrophenia
  • Visiteurs Du Soir *
The ones with an asterisk are blind buys, so I hope they're good (I figure I can't go wrong with Hitchcock, Chaplin, and an epic).

There's plenty of others that interest me, but I really need to get around to renting or streaming them.

Awww, you must have missed out on the nightclub scenes at the end. I thought they were the funniest parts.

This one is on my CC wishlist right now but I haven't heard enough about it (and I don't recall seeing much on it on IMDB and other sites but I haven't checked in a while).

I keep passing it over when buying CC releases, but it still interests me.

Playtime isn't really a comedy though.

I personally love Chaplin, my favorite actor of all. That being said, I think it's easily understandable why people would not care for his films or other silent films. It's not for everyone, but I don't think that makes someone an less of a cinephile. To not appreciate Chaplin's impact, however, is a different story.

It's absolutely a comedy. A satirical criticism of modernity, but undoubtedly a comedy.

I've had very mixed experience with silent comedies. For example, I loved The Kid, but that one also had some emotion behind it and I connected with that. Many fall flat for me, however. I think it's just discovering those few diamonds in the rough because I'm not a big fan of the genre.

Foreign Correspondent is one of Hitchcock's finest early works IMO. Monsieur Verdoux is a very unique Chaplin, it's not for everyone and liking Chaplin doesn't guarantee you'll like it. However, I think it's an essential film in his oeuvre.
