I think the Gold Rush and City Lights equal The Kid's emotion. I think the Circus also has an emotional hook.

I haven't heard much either, but it caught my eye. Most historical epics and dramas seem to. In fact, that's how I got into Criterion in the first place, when I got the box set with Ivan the Terrible and Alexander Nevsky (in fact, why the heck aren't those on Blu-Ray already?! ). Then I discovered Kurosawa, and The Seventh Seal, Beauty and the Beast, the Trilogy of Life, and most recently Marketa Lazarova...I guess I'm a genre fan.

L'avventura is my favorite of the trilogy, followed by La Notte then L'Eclisse. They share common themes and I think each can help allow for a better understanding of the others.

Cool. Thanks. I'll look into those. I've heard of the first two of course but I haven't really dived into Chaplin's films.

The Kid has broad appeal because of the orphaned child. City Lights' ending has been voted most emotional/romantic moment in film history. I was equally as moved by the Gold Rush though, placing me in the minority.

Cary Grant was a badass and he didn't even have to try either. He was so effortless in his acting.

Uh oh.

I seem to be aiming to become a Chaplin completionist, sorta, so I don't expect to feel too bad if it disappoints. Might even be something I'll just need multiple viewings of to appreciate, like many other films I love. We'll see how it goes.

Are there any Hitchcocks in the collection that aren't good?

Charlie Chaplin is one of my favorite beings in the cinema world.

Even if individuals are not fans of the silent era, they cannot deny the charm that Chaplin brings to the stage.

The Man Who Knew Too Much is inferior to the remake, IMO. It has certainly got strong points, but not sure I will rewatch it much...

Marketa Lazarova seems to be one of the more polarizing movies in the collection. People either love it on multiple levels or they cannot understand it or get bored and don't even make it through it. It's on the list to check out as well but with people so split I'll try to watch it before I buy it

Look at the lineup in the movie:

Cary Grant
Audrey Hepburn
Walter Mathau
George Kennedy
James Coburn

How can a movie with that crew be bad? Speaking of Mathua, I really would LOVE to see Hopscotch get an upgrade, one of my favorite titles in their catalog.

I enjoyed Gold Rush and really enjoyed City Lights (One of the more heart warming endings around!)

I've been slowly working my way through the massive Keaton Kino boxed set as well and some of them are really good!

How would you rank them all? (if you've seen them all)

I'm wondering if I should get one which one I should get. I haven't seen any of the ones from Criterion.

That would be the best. It is quite a surreal picture that can be hard to follow. I can't say I fully understood it, but I appreciated its style.

Love Silent film though - was lucky enough to see screening of Metropolis with the new found footage - what a great night! surprised that isn't on Criterion, I know MoC has it but still...

Brand Upon The Brain was an interesting take on the Silent film genre, loved the option to have the different voice overs on Criterion release.
Have you seen any films by Buster Keaton? I consider him to be better than Chaplin. The stunts are amazing.

Highly recommend The General and Steamboat Bill Jr. Also Sherlock Jr, Our Hospitality , ........(I recommend all his films)

I was watching this early this morning but had to stop when I realized it was 1:30 am and I was only 40 minutes in. Plus I had earlier watched the 3 hour + Jeanne Dielman so I was fading fast. I liked what I saw of Marketa and was in no way bored. I hope to finish it tonight.

I know you weren't asking me, but:

The Lady Vanishes
Foreign Correspondent
The Man Who Knew Too Much
The 39 Steps

All are outstanding films, The Lady Vanishes has the added benefit of Crook's Tour being included as well.
