B&N in my town are such mouth-breathing morons. I went by last night to see what they had on hand, which was pretty slim. A couple of blu titles were scattered in the DVD section, a couple on POP racks. I saw a lad working by the counter and asked him whether more stock was coming in for the sale. Here's how the conversation went:
B&N boy: "There is no sale." Me: "Really? You might want to check with that." B&N boy: "I don't know where you're getting your information, but we just had a sale a month ago, so they won't be having another one for a while." Me: "You might want to check your website. It says it's kicking off tomorrow." B&N boy: "Let me call my manager." A couple of minutes on his walkie talkie, he comes back. "My manager says that if there is a sale, it will only be for select titles." Me: "Check your website." He gets on the computer and brings up the site with the ad banner showing the Criterion 50% sale starting July 1st. B&N boy: "I don't know what this is about, but it's probably online only, we usually don't honor our online prices." Me: "Fine I'll order online. Good luck with your job." He looks puzzled. ![]() I'm so done with this store. They seem to hire clueless young people that just make shit up as they go along or strange cat ladies that smother you with too much conversation, yet still can't find the book you want and then tell you that they can order it online for you. The Lady Vanishes is your best bet, IMO. I also saw Suspicion only one time and do not consider it essential Hitch, although I look forward to seeing it again one day.

I'd like to say thanks again to those who tried to give advice yesterday.
Sadly my local shop had neither Charade nor Revanche in stock. (they had 7 copies of Thief, for example... why???) Oh well, 14 new criterions to the collection...... ![]() Last edited by TriuneImpurityRites; 07-01-2014 at 03:36 PM. |

![]() Let me rephrase, I've never seen ANY criterion release in any B/N store I've been to have more than 3or4 copies in stock. It just seemed out of place; or in other words, I bet this location NEVER sells all those copies. |

Usually the more popular mainstream titles the stores will sometimes stock more copies esp. to have in stock for the 50% off sales. I am always glad they do. The perfect way to pick out the best looking cases IMO.

One thing that I meant to mention in my User Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock, but somehow forgot to include, is that John Jarratt, the actor who played Albert Crundall, is the same actor who plays the chilling villain role in the 2005 Australian horror film, Wolf Creek.
Wolf Creek was too sadistic for my tastes (although I did not walk out on the film like Roger Ebert did), but Jarratt is quite amazing in his role. I wonder if he was deliberately chosen because of the Picnic at Hanging Rock angle. |

Haha, I feel for you. I hate it when people are obtuse like that. I have heard from others though that their B&N clerks are fellow film enthusiasts and are very obliging. It must be something in the local water supply ![]() |

Regardless, the protagonist of each film is typically in a rather difficult place in their life. Over the course of the film, they learn more about themselves through their interactions with others. |

Finally decided to move on the Criterion DVD's of "Green for Danger" and "49th Parallel" during the B&N sale.
Which means, based on my past luck, Criterion will announce blu-ray upgrades of both titles within the next 30 days! ![]() |

What does everyone think of 'All that Heaven Allows'? I am torn between this movie and 'King of the Hill'. I have 'King of the Hill' on hold for me at my local B&N store, but was thinking of replacing it with 'All that Heaven Allows' and picking up 'King of the Hill' later on in the month. Thoughts?

I agree that they are hard to describe, but I wouldn't call them romantic at all, unless you would call Eyes Wide Shut an unconventional romance. (Similar themes (to La Notte, at least) ) |
