I'm not sure if that was supposed to be a joke, but the second and third films actually were TV movies (completely aside from the "repackaging" of all three films in extended versions as a TV mini-series).

I also loved the Solaris remake, very different to Tarkovsky's but I loved it, especially the hypnotic score - just lacked Bach! :P
I liked Soderbergh's version more than Tarkovsky's.

I just can't see who you can improve films like Audition, I Saw The Devil or Oldboy etc :/
I never saw the first two. As for Oldboy, I didn't like the original overmuch, so I passed on watching the American remake. I also think Christopher Nolan's version of Insomnia is quite good, even if it's not quite as good as the original.

First sale trip today, picked up the following:

Ivan's Childhood
Solaris
Pale Flower
To Be Or Not To Be

Especially looking forward to exploring the Tarkovsky films, which are probably the most glaring gap in my film education. Along with the films available on Hulu Plus and Netflix, I've got Stalker and The Mirror on hold at my public library, so soon I'll be spending a week going through his filmography chronologically.

Actually, I liked the second movie more than the first. The third movie was a mess, but that had more to do with leaving out too much critical material from the book than anything else.

I still need to watch my copy of the extended versions to see if they (especially the third) work better.

Here's how the conversation went:

B&N boy:
"There is no sale."

Me:
"Really? You might want to check with that."

B&N boy:
"I don't know where you're getting your information, but we just had a sale a month ago, so they won't be having another one for a while."

Me:
"You might want to check your website. It says it's kicking off tomorrow."

B&N boy:
"Let me call my manager." A couple of minutes on his walkie talkie, he comes back.
"My manager says that if there is a sale, it will only be for select titles."

Me:
"Check your website." He gets on the computer and brings up the site with the ad banner showing the Criterion 50% sale starting July 1st.

B&N boy:
"I don't know what this is about, but it's probably online only, we usually don't honor our online prices."

Me:
"Fine I'll order online. Good luck with your job." He looks puzzled.

I'm so done with this store. They seem to hire clueless young people that just make shit up as they go along or strange cat ladies that smother you with too much conversation, yet still can't find the book you want and then tell you that they can order it online for you.
My local B&N is great. The people they have working in their media department are pretty film savvy and always know when the big sales are. I've gotten some great film recommendations from them over the years.

Hell, during last November's 50% off sale, one of the guys at my local B&N said to me, "These sales are great. I don't know why we don't have them more often."

Anyone hear why Pandora's Box or the von Sternberg set went oop? I'm hoping, especially in the case of PB, that it's going to be upgraded and reissued but if they've lost the rights....

would be nice to see some of the designs of the 70s come back again.
(the 20s)... there was some much stuff that had "style" and looked "modern"...

They always tell me that The Criterion sale is their most popular sale by far.

The staff love it too, because at least at my store, the people who work in Movies & Music seem to have pretty decent Criterion Collections themselves. They probably get even more discounts! haha

most people are probably waiting for these sales.. so i dont understand why they do not have the sales 4 times a year.. would probably be much better for the B&N shops and criterion.

Lol, shame :/ knowing me ill end up getting some though lol, their site only links to Amazon though - hope they have some on Ebay :/
The MoC store is pretty well hidden, but can be found here.

Thanks - another member linked me earlier ^^

They need a serious overhaul of their site - feels so out dated and old lol

Criterion is so modern and nice and fresh haha :P I am so biased >.<

But seriously, I know its more about the film, but Criterion blow most releases out of the water with the overall presentation of their releases, the artwork, supplements (minus a few releases) and quality - even just the packaging, MoC looks a bit out dated and a bit dull - where as Criterions artwork are so striking and bold and fresh.

Would still be nice to have some film from other companies :P - I have got a friend who's just started a company releases film in Korea, he's been in business a while but his companies releases are really nicely presented too and very high quality - so yeah I need to branch out to MoC and Arrow (New to this company though) - plus MoC has some epic film that Criterion don't have.

Do MoC releases contain booklets like Criterion? If so whats the quality like and contents?
