No. The characters and situations are different but I do like to call it the "boredom trilogy" in how it looks at bored alienated people having trouble connecting in a meaningful way.

I wish we could get more Lubitsch in the CC!

Identification of a Woman may not be quite in the same league as some earlier Antonioni movies, but it has some strikingly beautiful and fascinating camera shots. There's also a mysterious fog sequence that looks marvelous in high definition. Most importantly, though, the synth-pop soundtrack, featuring the likes of John Foxx, Tangerine Dream, Japan, and OMD, is really something else. I wrote in my User Review that Identification of a Woman has a "softcore Euro-sleaze" feel to it in the vein of those late-night Cinemax foreign flicks during the 1980s, but this works in the film's favor.

Eyes Without a Face is a horror film in terms of horror being an emotion and not a genre. If we're talking pure emotion, then Eyes Without a Face is one of the true horror films. There are no supernatural elements, if that's what you're wondering, but there are some ethereal ghostly sequences, and a couple of jarring visceral curveballs. Somehow, it does not seem right to refer to Eyes Without a Face as a "thriller." It is a horror film, through and through.
Thank You! You made me a believer. Im picking them both up as extras tonight when i order my other titles from B&N.

Eyes Without a Face, on the other hand, is something I could live without seeing again. I've seen it twice now and I still can't figure out why everybody makes a big deal about it. I would say it's more psychological than horror. It has a few creepy moments, but it's more of a "what people do when they get an idea in their head" type of movie.
Thank You! Im going to pick up Identification tonight when I place my B&N order but i think I better wait & Hulu Eyes. Thats usually how I feel about that type of movie once Ive seen them, even if I really really like it (example The Innocents) usually once is enough. I know The Innocents is a completely different movie but I think you see what Im trying to say lol

Not Criterion, but related and probably of interest to some in here. After picking up my B&N haul, stopped at Best Buy and was shocked to find them carrying Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac. They did have it out a week early, which was probably a mistake, but even better the Vol 1 and 2 set rang up 17.99. Blind buy for me, but have liked everything so far that Ive seen from LVT. They had a pretty nice pile of them on an endcap.

My thought is leaning towards upgrade. October was the month that we got Cassavettes upgraded so perhaps October has become upgraded box month? Or perhaps it's just conjecture and wishful thinking.

Wow B&N online is complete shit

I placed an order with 25 movies, it got declined, so while I was canceling the order, one by one, 17 movies went through, but the order is still 'processing' (since yesterday)

ok that's fine, I placed the remaining 8 on another order, and guess what? declined again

while canceling, one went through and it just shipped

now the remaining 7 'cannot be processed', so I said **** it, I'll just cancel the order, cancelled on their website, but got an email from paypal that I've been charged $120, yet the order was $150

and their costumer service is as clueless as I am

Pretty much confirmed we will be getting a L'Avventura upgrade. Possible adding Les Blank's Hot Pepper as well.

Big Lubitsch fan here, and though I'd never seen it til Crit brought it out on blu, I'd put Design for Living as one of his top films. Lubitsch's stuff is so smart and deft. Real fond of Trouble in Paradise, too. Or at least of the clock between the two bedrooms.

Saw To Be or Not to Be awhile ago and wasn't as impressed with it, but you know how it goes.....a film can strike you differently when you watch it a second time. Wes Anderson apparently references it a few times in Grand Budapest, so I'm giving it a new viewing soon, just for jollies.

Recently rewatched Grand Hotel, also for Grand Budapest. Wow, they don't make 'em like that anymore. And the Count reminded me of a Lubitsch character.
