They could use a rubber band and attach the book to the case that way.

Option A has a little more variety, but Option B gives you more movies (9 as opposed to 6), and I always figure "go for the more expensive titles when getting 50% off".

So I'll go with B, but you can't go wrong with A, either.

Thanks for the input! I guess I'll have to do some more thinking before deciding which list to get.

Question on Blind Buys:
I have a few titles I definitely want in my collection that I've already seen and really enjoyed, including Au Revoir Les Enfants, Days of Heaven, Wild Strawberries, Three Colors, The 400 Blows, and The Red Shoes.

Any strong feelings on the following which I have yet to see. Are any riskier than others/any recommendations either way? Thanks!

8 1/2 (I've seen both Dolce Vita and La Strada...too bad they don't have BDs yet)
Tokyo Story
Black Narcissus (I've seen The River, so interested in India/Asian culture + huge fan of glorious color releases)
Kagemusha (I have Rashomon and Seven Samurai)
Jules et Jim

I can speak to:

Black Narcissus - Is WONDERFUL. Powell and Pressburger are my favourite CC discoveries. The Blu Ray is incredible to look at.

Kagemusha - Is good, but probably my least favourite of Kurosawa's films. I recommend Yojimbo or Hidden Fortress over that. (I have Throne of Blood but haven't seen it yet. I expect to love it)

Jules et Jim - I enjoyed but didn't love. 400 Blows blew me away, so maybe I was expecting too much?

Criterions marketing department has found my weakness in the form of a tagline. "Effortlessly cool"

Looks like I'll be blind buying Judex.

All are good selections. Personally, I'd rate them in this descending order:

Tokyo Story
Black Narcissus

Jules et Jim
Kagemusha

You should be fine with any of the two list, because Persona is in both.

I was a little worried about Tokyo Story because Autumn Afternoon did nothing for me. But it's so highly regarded. Thanks.

Thanks for your comments! I wonder if I should get Black Narcissus before Red Shoes, which I have seen. I kind of figured Kagemusha would be one to see first. Jules et Jim I've seen parts of...I always like films where characters experience some change to their relationships.

My ranking of the P&P films in the Criterion Collection:

The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp
The Red Shoes
Black Narcissus

BUT, they are all amazing films. That isn't a slight on any of them.

8 1/2 and Tokyo Story are the definition of western and eastern film masterpieces. You will see often these films in any top 10 list from great film critics and directors.

8 1/2 is surreal at moments and very entertaining.
Tokyo Story has a different, more meditative pace. Ozu is a master in framing and scene composition.

Don't worry, I wasn't a huge fan of Jules and Jim either. The 400 Blows, on the other hand, is a gem.

I wonder how The Last Metro is.

I certainly didn't hate it, and will rewatch it and hopefully get more out of it. My wife liked it less though, so that might be a bit of a problem...

Of course--they're among the greatest films. Essentials for any collection. Are both exceptional presentations re: image and sound? I remember when I picked up Seventh Seal it was very highly praised for its BD quality.

Criterion's BD of 8 1/2 looks truly spectacular, one of the best B&W transfers on Blu-ray. TOKYO STORY looks pretty good but is nowhere near as dazzling. While TOKYO STORY is a powerful, moving film, I prefer Ozu's FLOATING WEEDS and hope that gets a Blu-ray upgrade soon.

Really love B&N's pick up in store option, especially for the digipak releases so you can look at it in person before. The hard plastic cases I'm not as worried about getting damaged in shipping, though I think we all have had bad experiences with the cardboard cases.

I caught The Last Metro on cable a couple years ago, loved it. Still haven't gotten around to watching the CC blu, but am looking forward to it whenever that is.

After a pretty bad week with the silent era genre that began with The Phantom Carriage, I decided to sit down tonight to watch Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1925 film, Master of the House. This film would serve as my first introduction to the director and his body of work.

Master of the House centers around a family on the verge of splitting apart due to the abusive and tyrannical husband, Viktor. After losing his business, Viktor has developed a rather bitter personality that has been directly affecting his wife and children for an undisclosed amount of time. After an intervention of sorts with his wife, Ida, her mother, and Viktor's childhood nanny, "Mads", Viktor stomps off to get some fresh air. During this time, Ida decides that she will take some time away from the family in order to get some much needed physical and mental rest. When Viktor comes home, he is livid and given a reality check. It is either up for him to reassess his lifestyles and change for the better or risk losing Ida forever.

The film serves as one of the earliest examples of challenging the patriarchal society. Through Ida's time away from the family, Viktor learns the importance of the female in the household. They are not there to slave away during all hours of the day, but rather they are the heart, soul, and caretakers of the family.

As much as I enjoyed the message given off by this film, I could not help being turned off by many of the obvious and phony things that weigh this film down. Note: I will put the details in spoiler tags to prevent anyone from being spoiled.

[Show spoiler]
  • Everything in the film feels scripted to the point that it feels unnatural. All of the actors say their lines and carry themselves to the point where it is laughable. No one can do any wrong by the time the film is over and everybody lives happily ever after. Given the context of the film, this is a large step in the wrong direction.

  • At the beginning of the film, we meet an unbelievably cruel individual (Viktor) who finds fault with everything, regardless of how big or small they may be. He abuses his family both mentally and physically and they manage to stand by his side, doing whatever he asks of them. As soon as Ida leaves the household, Viktor manages to do a complete 180º turn and become the most gentle, kind-hearted, remorseful individual. By the time the movie is over, you will be double-checking that you are in fact still watching Master of the House.

  • Viktor's childhood nanny, "Mads", serves as the nanny for the modern day Viktor and his family. She keeps to herself for the first portion of the film, but as soon as Ida leaves the household, she becomes the domineering individual of the family. This may have been my biggest issue with the film because I was happy that she was treating Viktor cruelly in a manner similar to how he himself treated his own family (payback can be very unpleasant). On the other hand, do two wrongs make a right?

Those are just a few of the things that I found wrong about the film. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much the film kept my interest.

Master of the House was definitely ahead of its time in terms of challenging the social structures of society. Due to its interesting story and comfortable pacing, the film gets a solid rating in my book.
