Does anyone know if Criterion is going to re-release their dual-format digipak editions as Blu-ray only amaray editions ? What's the plan?

As for TPC... I agree with the poster that said the trick is to always go in with low expectations. I never let anything get hyped up too much for me so it's a shock when something turns out to be disappointing. I only recently "got" Bergman so I ordered a bunch of his Criterion's in the sale. I'm excited to see some of his more well known work. All I've seen is The Hour of the Wolf and The Passion of Anna. I really enjoyed the second half of THOTW. Haunting stuff.

Hopefully you enjoy TPOJOA more though. It's great.
Thank you!

Regarding Bergman, this is my ranking of his films (from what I've seen).
  • Persona
  • Wild Strawberries
  • The Virgin Spring
  • Smiles Of A Summer Night
  • Autumn Sonata
  • Summer Interlude
  • The Magician
  • The Seventh Seal
  • Summer With Monika
I just watched Summer with Monika last week and it's probably my least favorite out all the films I've seen. That being said, it's still good. I also need to desperately rewatch The Seventh Seal, as it was my introduction to Bergman and a lot of thought-provoking issues were thrown my way. I clearly was not ready haha.

Whenever I have five and a half hours to spare, I'll watch Fanny and Alexander.

Only after stock has depleted for the dual format ones I imagine.

Nothing is certain yet.

One could assume that once they run out of the dual-format stock of a particular film, it will be repackaged in both a standard Blu-ray and DVD packaging, but there has been no word yet.

That being said, such dual-format releases as Picnic at Hanging Rock and Red River will not be re-released due to the included novel.

That's what I believe, but I'm not entirely sure.

I remember looking around Criterion's website a week or two ago and several of the dual-format releases, such as A Brief History of Time and Breaking the Waves, were listed as "out of stock".

Upon checking now, they appear to be back in stock and still only available in the dual-format.

It's just that the Highsmith novels are more widely known and one might feel more inclined to call it a remake or a retread.
I wouldn't call Purple Noon a remake, either. I'm not sure where you're getting that from. I'm not saying that movies are "remakes" of novels. I'm saying that because "remake" means "to make again", that a second film adaptation of a novel can be considered a remake of the first film adaptation of the novel.

People tend to call John Carpenter's The Thing a remake of Howard Hawks' & Christian Nyby's The Thing from Another World. People tend to call the 1936 film Satan Met a Lady and the 1941 film The Maltese Falcon as remakes of the 1931 film. People tend to call David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a remake of Niels Arden Oplev's. People tend to call Soderbergh's version of Solaris a remake of Tarkovsky's.

I know this is an oft-argued point, but I'm just saying that the definition of "remake" does not preclude calling a new adaptation of a novel or short story a remake of a previous film version.

RE: Harold Lloyd - The Freshman is one of the best releases by Criterion this year in terms of technical presentation. It's absolutely gorgeous. The jokes and gags, on the other hand, got repetitive very, very fast. I scratched my head in wonder as to whether they were thrown in to annoy the audience or to make them laugh. Safety Last! is probably his best film from what I've seen. It's worth seeing alone due to the set designs and the final twenty minutes where Lloyd climbs the building.

RE: The Passion of Joan of Arc - I've had it on my DVR for several months now. I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I will change that sometime this week, though.
Not only Bergman, but Chaplin said it was the greatest film ever made up to that point in his opinion. (early 1920's) I guess it's different strokes for different folks... I can't stand Salo, a film that people rave about around here.

The score from KTL is enthralling, adds an entire new dimension to the film. I enjoyed the film much more with the experimental soundtrack. (surprised that it was not the default audio selection)

I guess I'm gonna wait then. I'd like to purchase an amaray edition of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Well, I disagree with that, too. I haven't seen both versions of any of the films you have referenced above, but it seems clear to me that TTMR exists in an entirely different universe than Purple Noon as it drew from the original novels and not PN or any of the other films that came before it.

Perhaps the conclusion that is drawn will differ from piece to piece, but what about East of Eden? The mini-series covered the arc of the entire novel, while the James Dean film only covered part of it. Certainly, the word "remake" does not apply when speaking of the mini-series and the 1955 film.

I just got back from the library with 5 more films I need to "try before I buy". Before, I was throwing caution to the wind regarding blind-buying, but now I think it is totally foolish if one doesn't like the film when buying something out of the blue.

Here are the titles I borrowed:

Hearts and Minds
The Long Day Closes
La Promesse
L'Eclisse
All That Heaven Allows

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed La Promesse. The PQ is just okay, but probably the best it's ever looked. I proudly own that and it was a blind buy.

I also enjoyed The Long Day Closes but would not own it. However, the PQ and AQ are spectacular!

I have seen All That Heaven Allows but it has been ages. I do seem to recall that I enjoyed Written on the Wind much more.

hey j dubs - how goes it?

since we've talked a lot about blind buy philosophies, here is one way that I look at it:

it costs 2 people around $20 to see a movie on the big screen. once the experience is over, you're left with nothing except your memory. being that big screen showings of older films are few and far between (especially for those in smaller towns,) I think grabbing a CC title for $18 or so and experiencing it in hi-def with (if you instincts are correct) a good chance that you'll revisit the film at least once, then I think blind buying is fine.

Army of Shadows and Rififi were blind buys for me with the first costing me OOP prices. I enjoyed those films so much that it will balance out the occasional film for which I have mixed feelings.

furthermore, for me anyway, I bought probably a half dozen DVDs of films that I absolutely loved when I saw them for the first time, but for one reason or another, I never got around to watching them again and they have been sitting on my shelf for years. I don't know if anyone else has experienced that, but what's worse? buying a film you like and never watching it (a matter of not getting around to it) or blind buying and having (at least) an "it was ok. I'm glad I saw it" experience. ..and the total duds you can unload on ebay or whatever.

I loved Wild Strawberries and Virgin Spring. Seventh Seal has a fantastic BD presentation. What are you feelings for the quality of Wild Strawberries? I screened on DVD, but of course am targeting the BD this month. Are the visuals as impressive as the B&W for Seventh Seal?

just when i think i am out, they keep pulling me back in...(got a 20% coupon today)

i think i have narrowed it down to these three (all blind):

the 400 blows (so highly regarded, seems i can not go wrong)
the battle of algiers (again, highly regarded. subject matter i would certainly enjoy)
hearts and minds (this one seems like something i would very much enjoy, but it is either a "must own" or "garbage")

any thoughts would be appreciated!

I heartily recommend The Battle of Algiers and The 400 Blows. Can't speak to Hearts and Minds as I haven't seen it.
