You should at least wait to see the movie before getting defensive about why people dislike it. I'm not a Wes Anderson fan by any means, but even I don't think he deserves all of the criticism that he gets. That being said, I am 100% with everyone who thinks The Life Aquatic is a terrible movie. The visuals are nice, but overall, it's an incredibly dull film.
Was once a fan, but THIS was the film that ruined it for me. Well said here, Scottie.

As far as I know, isn't owned by StudioCanal. They just have the DVD/BD rights in certain countries. I could be wrong about that. In any case...

Generally speaking, Criterion's StudioCanal title rights didn't expire all at once, because they didn't have a blanket contract with StudioCanal. Each title had its own licensing agreement, so the titles will go OOP from Criterion whenever the individual contract expires.

I wasn't a Wes Anderson fan until recently. I couldn't get through The Royal Tenenbaum's or The Life Aquatic the first time I tried to watch them, I just didn't get it. Not to say Anderson has to be "gotten" to enjoy his films, but after I really started buying some of the foreign CC releases and some more obscure indie films I really appreciated his work more. While his movies have an "inside joke" feel to them and they're easy to take shots at, I still enjoy them and think they're a nice way to spend a few hours.

Only one film for me for this sale: Modern Times. I figure that you can't really go wrong with Chaplin, and so the more the merrier (I already have City Lights and The Gold Rush, which I adore). I do hope to pick up a few more films in November (Kurosawa, Bergman, Polanski, Lean, Hitchcock).

I personally find his films to be awful with an obvious attempt to be quirky for the sake of being quirky. The problem for me is that it comes off forced and irritating.

Perhaps the conclusion that is drawn will differ from piece to piece, but what about East of Eden? The mini-series covered the arc of the entire novel, while the James Dean film only covered part of it. Certainly, the word "remake" does not apply when speaking of the mini-series and the 1955 film.
I agree. I personally love Purple Noon but didn't care for Ripley. I think they're very different films. Same with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I love the far superior original but didn't care for Fincher's version. I think Ripley deviated enough from Purple to make it worthwhile to make a new version. With Dragon, Fincher's version was wholly unnecessary IMO.

I could have guessed that Polaroid doesn't like the Beatles.

BUT... if he likes modern rock music of any kind, he has the Beatles to thank as they have influenced everyone from bands as poppy as the Smiths and REM to bands as heavy as Nirvana to Metallica, etc.

I agree, I too thought it was pointless, whereas Blue is the Warmest Color, while not as graphic, had a very distinct point.

The Beatles are too big of a topic to tackle today . Short story: I hope that when I revisit A Hard Day's Night, I see things I did not when I saw it for the first time four years ago. If that fails to happen, I know I'll get something from the extras

Yes, that is another one of my criticisms with him, as well.

No way, people hating a Wes Anderson because it's quirky? Alert the presses!

I like plenty of quirky movies, but the problem with Anderson for me is it doesn't feel natural. Everything from the script to the editing to the directing to the costumes to the art direction to the acting is needlessly quirky.

For me, it's not the quirkiness, per se. It's the "in-jokiness". The films feel like they are targeted at people who get the joke. Since I don't get the joke, his films are a bit lost on me. I think it's great that he has his fans who enjoy his movies. I'm just not one of them.

I do confess that I rather like The Life Aquatic, though I don't love it.

For those who enjoy Blu is the Warmest Color, may I recommend a Room in Rome. While Blue takes place over a long period of time, Room in Rome (based in part on En La Cama) takes place over one night. It's not as raw and authentic as Blue, nor does it have the thematic scope, but I think Julio Medem does an excellent directing job and Elena Anaya is great,

I don't even understand what this means. I don't think "Quirky" is a criticism anymore than "green" is.

There are so few auteurs worth anything making movies now, thank goodness for Anderson. We need more filmmakers with a voice.
