I tend to prefer Criterion's release. BFI's encode is slightly more zoomed in and contrast boosted.

HUGE NEWS!

Someone on CriterionForum that has a Criterion source has confirmed Criterion will release "The New Hollywood boxset" that includes:

Five Easy Pieces
The Last Picture Show
Easy Rider
Head
King of Marvin Gardens
A Safe Place
Drive, He Said

Now on CriterionCast the rumors are saying:

this set will be out in November
It will be in the mainline
It will be on blu-ray

All I have to say is, I will be broke by just looking at the price of this. Big news I must say for Criterion to get these films. This is a dream.

This is HUGE if those indeed come out on Blu-Ray. Isn't Easy Rider already out on Blu though?

And the one thing that Criterion certainly does have going for it is slightly less cropping on the sides of the image.

Looks like a stellar release. Thanks for the hard work!
Good afternoon Seretur,

Indeed, it is a stellar release. The supplemental features, in particular, are very good.

And you are correct, Carlo di Palma is probably the only person that would know what the correct color-scheme for Red Desert is. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us, which leaves plenty of room for speculation.

I am not an authority on the subject, but my preference is for the BFI release. Criterion have a history of color-correcting many films (for example, their Melville releases), and in this case I feel that the green tint is the more accurate one.

In any event, I hope that you enjoy this release.

It is.

If I remember right it came out in a digibook a little while back. I guess it's possible Criterion could re-release it as a part of a box set though, if Sony licensed it out to them.

Bingo. This will be a box-set ONLY release, which I can respect. Atleast Criterion got these films. This is a huge step.

I could try to look this up myself, but I'm feeling kind of lazy right now. Are all of those films owned by Sony? I'm wondering if Criterion went through the trouble to obtain the license from multiple studios.

Also, I think older major studio releases being licensed by Criterion could become a more frequent blu-ray trend. Based on most of my friends' blu-ray collections, it seems like quite a bit of the general public are only buying new/blockbuster releases on blu-ray. I think if a studio wants to release one of their more appreciated catalog releases, they will be more eager to go through Criterion at this point due to their built-in loyal fanbase.

On the surface, this would almost appear to be a Bob Rafaelson collection, but I'm in for Last Picture Show, Head and Five Easy Pieces at least! Head ran on TCM a couple of years ago and looked amazing!

I believe these are all Columbia Pictures films, so yes owned by Sony.

I am as well starting to think catalog titles could be making their way to Criterion with the fanbase already here and the lack of sales for these films to the general public. It saves these companies money for letting Criterion do the distribution and make some money off of it. It works out for all sides, even us.

I just hope with this expanding Criterion, I hope this means more releases a month and not taking away from harder to find films.

Well, I LOVE Five Easy Pieces and Last Picture Show - two of the best films of the 70s, period. But what an odd set if it's true - a strange choice of films to lump together.

I didn't know much about Criterion until fairly recently. Has their number of standard catalog DVD releases (not counting Eclipse and Essential Art House) always been about 4-5 per month as it it now?

I also would be surprised to see if this does happen. "Easy Rider" was released on Blu-ray not that long ago on Blu-ray, TLPS was re-released with "Nickelodeon" last year but not for Blu. But that would be great if Criterion did release it on BD.

This is where maybe I get the fact that this is "Box-set Only" so Sony can still make money off of their single release of Easy Rider, but you can't have a New Hollywood set without the big one.

Well 6 of the 7 I believe has Jack Nicholson's hands on it in some form (writer, director, actor, producer) and all of them were important to the movement so I can see why they are in this set. It's like the French New Wave for Hollywood.

I just hope someone can get Dennis Hopper's THE LAST MOVIE out as well (even though I want OUT OF THE BLUE first, THE LAST MOVIE was around this time movement).

The number has changed as Criterion got bigger. It dips too.

DVDBeaver has their review/comparison up for the "Close-Up" blu-ray now for those that are interested.

Pretty suspicious to me. This was the very same (DVD only) box set that Sony was to have released last October. Sounds like one of those rumors that gets more exaggerated each time it's repeated. Amazon had it priced at $71.99 at one point.
