I pretty much own most of the existing Criterion titles that I've been dying to own, so I usually just go into Barnes & Noble with something specific in mind and pick it up.

This month, I'll be limiting myself to the new July releases for the most part, but I've also got a hankering to see Robinson Crusoe on Mars again. The David Lean Directs Noël Coward set is calling my name, but I'm going to wait until later in the month when I'm sure that I've got a decent financial cushion. There are a lot of Kino Lorber titles coming out later this month that I really want.

You should probably research the movie before you think of getting it. I've never heard someone say they thought that AHDN was a documentary before now.

Well I know NOTHING about The Beatles or any thing they have done? So how can you blame me? Its a 'film' about the Beatles, which to me sounds like a documentary?

If it was a documentary i'd be more inclined to try it and see if it can maybe show me something about them that may change my perception on them, but to me they are just an over rated boy band which does music I can't stand.

I just ask my store to order copies of the titles I want that they don't normally stock, and then hold them for me. That way I get to use my membership card to get the additional 10% off (when you order directly online from B&N.com, your membership only gets you free shipping). And since I'm buying in-store, I get to examine the discs and make sure I'm getting nice copies before I pay.

Right now my local store has ordered Fish Tank and a couple of non-Criterion art house titles for me that I'll pick up next week.

I'm sure that I'll love A Hard Day's Night. I've seen bits and pieces of the movie several times over the decades, and I enjoy the vibe of The Beatles when they were riding that wave of popularity.

I probably won't get around to seeing it this weekend, though, because I'll be off the grid for most of tomorrow and Sunday for a couple of 4th of July races.

I've also been enjoying a "drive-in movie" phase over the past few days that will continue into this weekend. When I'm back at home on Sunday afternoon and evening, I'm planning for a triple feature of Just Before Dawn, The Final Terror, and The Burning (1981). If I have time, I might just have to spin my Criterion DVD of Equinox. It's like a greasy hamburger that is not good for you, but it's still oh so good.

My B&N recently reorganized their DVD section but they still have a decent area dedicated to Criterions, my only problem is that I can't find any of the Eclipse sets, and I was hoping to pick up "When Horror Came to Shochiku" this month...

What do you guys think of Cries and Whispers? It's had my eye for a while and I'm considering grabbing it during the sale. Have there been any rumblings of an upgrade?

From Criterion's website.

Quote:
Meet the Beatles! Just one month after they exploded onto the U.S. scene with their Ed Sullivan Show appearance, John, Paul, George, and Ringo began working on a project that would bring their revolutionary talent to the big screen. A Hard Day’s Night, in which the bandmates play slapstick versions of themselves, captured the astonishing moment when they officially became the singular, irreverent idols of their generation and changed music forever. Directed with raucous, anything-goes verve by Richard Lester and featuring a slew of iconic pop anthems, including the title track, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “I Should Have Known Better,” and “If I Fell,” A Hard Day’s Night, which reconceived the movie musical and exerted an incalculable influence on the music video, is one of the most deliriously entertaining movies of all time.

Any one else have thoughts on Judex? I love Eyes without a Face, but this would be a blind buy,so I'm being cautious.

I recently bought, watched a clip and it sold it to me, the costumes, the visuals - look incredible

I would say safe to say "yes" at some point in the future. Criterion is working their way through the Bergman library. When? I could not say.

Funny. My local B&N has drastically reduced their overall stock of Blu-rays, but the Criterion section is still as robust as it ever was.

Not liking Hitchcock films would be one thing. Calling Hitchcock an overrated schlockmeister would be another thing entirely, wouldn't it?

It's a fictional comedy with The Beatles playing themselves. I'm loathe to make this comparison, but in concept, it's much Spice World.

Yes, but in general usage a "boy band" it's a group of teen boys assembled by a producer to present a look and perform songs written by others.

The Beatles came together by themselves, made a living playing clubs, and were writing most of their own material by the time they got a record deal.

Your opinion is that you don't like what you've heard, which is perfectly valid. Calling then a boy band, though, is not only wrong but makes you look as if you don't know what you are talking about.
