So in my time out today, I stopped in Books a Million. They now carry some Criterion releases. That's the extent of the good.
The bad? Small amount, maybe a dozen titles. The majority are DVD verions. Prices are high (Think $33 per Blu-ray release) They don't price match. What a shame, they had 2 or 3 I would've bought right then if they were the BN sale price. |

I went and bought my first Criterion movies today. I wish I could have bought more, but I had to stop some where. I may go back at the end of the month, if I'm able to.
So, I got The Hidden Fortress Seven Samurai Godzilla Stagecoach Time to fire up the DVD player and do some watching. |

![]() ![]() I watched The Long Day Closes last night for the first time on the DVD that I borrowed from the library. I didn't "get it". I was bored beyond belief. It was like a depressing musical that didn't go anywhere. Then, a crazy thing happened... I started watching the supplements and the interviews and eventually even watched Terrence Davies in the 1992 episode of the South Bank Show and couldn't get my eyes off this guy. He's so intelligent and interesting! I understood what he was saying and how he suffered as a child in his upbringing and how this film was deeply personal. This was far more interesting than the film, that is all I can say. I'm glad I watched this first because I would have regretted purchasing this at the Criterion sale. It's not a film I could watch a 2nd time and even the first time it was hard to enjoy and take in. Last edited by jw007; 07-04-2014 at 07:38 PM. |

You'll need a blu ray player to play them first. |

Oh what do people think of Cronos?
I bought as a blind buy based on how much I loved The Devils Backbone - now I don't regret buying it as it does have some of Del Toro's signature horror elements to it which is nice to see how he has evolved and stuff, and loved the story/idea behind the film. But I did find it a bit weak, I know it was his first film and stuff - I need to rewatch tbh as only watched once so may need a few more viewing but it really lacked something. Might be worse for me as I may be comparing to Devils Backbone? Then again I hated Devils Backbone when I first saw it years ago, but now its one of my favourite ghost story films. Anyone feel this or had something similar? I think it would have possibly been better had it been a black and white film, for atmosphere and eeriness? I don't know, really need to re watch lol Del Toro is a weird director, I see him as two directors. The one who made films like Devils Backbone and Pans Labyrinth... and the other who made Hell Boy and Pacific Rim. I find it bizarre how varied he is with his films, from the personal, bold/beautiful films all the way to those hollywood films that have no personality at all... My god I do ramble on.... ----- Haven't even seen one mention of Berlin Alexanderplatz, another of my favorites, only available on DVD. Guess not much DVD activity going on these days, at least not here. Probably my favorite box set from Criterion (so far, I'm way behind), PQ is excellent, Fassbinder magic. |
