It really blew me away. It has a tone similar to City of God. Also the cinematography is superb.

Just finished my first watch of Red River. Really impressed by that feature. Looks phenomenal as you would expect.

At first I thought it was lacking in special features since the first Blu-ray only had three supplements. Seems like Criterion housed a lot of them on the second Blu-ray as well. It's a complete package for sure.

Also watched Hard Day's Night last night with the new 5.1 mix. Wow was that good. To the people on the fence about the film...I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it unless I loved The Beatles. It's a serviceable film made better by the fact we get to see The Beatles perform some of the many classics in their library.

Watched Foreign Correspondent. Definitely second tier Hitchcock, but enjoyable. There are 3 major set pieces in this that are just fantastic, some of the best in any of Hitch's films. The windmill scene in particular is suspenseful and atmospheric. The last one features some impressive effects. However, 2 of these appear fairly early on, so the film sort of peaks too early and is less interesting until the end. There are some eye catching visuals throughout, like the escape outside the hotel. It does drag here and there, so I'd call the film sporadically entertaining. The film is a little overlong, and I didn't find myself caring about the romance in this one. A decent watch, lifted by the aforementioned set pieces. I'd have to watch it again to better digest all the political intrigue during the second half.

The film is about two brothers who own the rights to a spring on their land, which in turn supplies the entire village with water. After acquiring more land, the two brothers (specifically the older one) decide to cut the other villagers off so that they get first dibs for watering their fields.

Anyway, long story short, a back and forth battle ensues between the two parties and in one scene, one of the villagers shoots the brothers' dog at a relatively close-up range with a shotgun. The dog screams and writhes in pain before dying.

Absolutely nauseating.

Damn. That's something I don't even know if I could watch. And I watch some screwed up stuff! I can't believe that actually happened and they filmed that. I would feel terrible for awhile if I were there on set to witness that, and I would certainly never forget it. It's always queasy watching animals being killed, of course, but the dog is a domesticated animal and such a dominating presence in people's lives, they're our friends, they love us unconditionally. And to see a dog killed for no other reason then for entertainment...sick. I always feel sad whenever a dog is "in danger" or being mistreated within the context of any movie, or of course when they "die." The scene is sad and you cry and forget about it the next day, because you know in reality that dog is safe and alive after the cameras stop rolling. With this, it's just disturbing. That's really terrible.

Was the movie good besides that?

Just read about that, wow that must be a difficult scene to sit through.

The film was a bit redundant at times, but it was surprisingly not as predictable as I had imagined it to be. I would say that it was a decent film overall and the best of the four films in the set that I have seen thus far.

Going back to the animal cruelty issue, I usually do not have as big of an issue with it in films as I did with it tonight. Yes, there have been times where I have almost thrown up because of the live slaughter of animals (see: "Blood of the Beasts"), but the difference between that and this was educational vs. entertainment purposes. Killing any animal, especially a domesticated one, for entertainment purposes is as wrong as it gets, in my opinion. In an earlier WCP film, Touki Bouki, we see the live slaughter of an ox at a slaughterhouse, the job of one of the main characters in the film. I am going to assume that the director asked the factory if they could film a scene in that location for story purposes - not for the hell of it.

Yes, especially because I had no idea it was coming. Also, the scene came minutes after one of the main characters decapitated a chicken and threw it at a woman.

Watched The Certified Copy last night and, while I wasn't blown away by it (it was a bit boring in parts, to be honest), I definitely appreciated how the film makes your brain work. Asking questions, struggling to find the answers and not necessarily succeeding... oh man, that's part of what makes movies so fascinating.

arent the AU (OOP) and Italian disc better?

Quote:
the Criterion release does not use the 4K restoration as a foundation -- grain is better resolved on the Italian release.

but

Quote:
I personally prefer the color scheme of the Criterion release because I believe that it is far more appropriate for the film's period atmosphere, but you should read our reviews of the two releases and form your own opinion. I would also like to mention that the Italian release comes with a bonus disc with Giuseppe Tornatore's fantastic documentary L'ultimo gattopardo: Ritratto di Goffredo Lombardo about legendary Italian producer Goffredo Lombardo.

damn it...

comparing the screens you can see the benefit from the 4k restoration very easy..

Im new to this film so don't know much - I am loving the colour of this transfer? the colours are stunning and really emphasis the beauty of the sets and the cost design - gonna have a look at comparisons now

This transfer is pretty decent, lots of grain but that doesn't bother me at all, I feel it adds to the film lol

Oooh, didn't know ti included American version of the film - nice addition but its not hard to read subtitles :P seeing the sets and hearing the language absorbed you into the films, it won't look right in american? The transfer does look as good for that release though...

I need to watch the other version of Godzilla on Criterion release too
