Is it announced in the news here? (I check them regularly)

By the way, the Criterions I have in my wishlist (and were released prior to 2014) are:

The 39 steps
The Lady Vanishes
The Man who knew too much
On the Waterfront
Paris, Texas
Purple Noon
Seconds
Three Colors Trilogy
Weekend

I'm glad then I bought in this sale Days of Heaven instead of Seconds, since the first one is around for a few years.
I would be very surprised to see the Criterion editions of the three Hitchcock films go out of print. Those titles were in the US Public Domain until mid-1997; the foreign copyrights were restored in August of that year, and notice of intent to enforce was then filed with the US Copyright Office.

The upshot is that Criterion licensed the films from the new copyright holder (Carlton Film Distributors, Ltd.). Since then, the Criterion editions have been the major source of income for Carlton where these three titles are concerned; I seriously doubt they would want to rock that particular boat.

That said, don't wait too long to buy them. Life is short, and if you're anything like me, you'll want to watch them over and over again.

The OOP films can still be got on eBay. I've got Pierrot le Fou if you are interested. /shamelessadvertisement

Criterion's OOP percentage is roughly 3%. Twilight Times' percentage is roughly 19%.

(I did the math for him. )

Still quite a difference. What's a flip-flopped ratio among friends?

Just watched Frances Ha and loved it. I can certainly understand why it's very polarizing, with more on this forum disliking it than liking it, but I really enjoyed it.

You're not alone.

It reminded me a bit of Lena Dunham's GIRLS, but with a more inherently likable lead character.

Truly enjoyed Frances Ha after seeing it on the Criterion Blu earlier this year. Stunning...I feel this film is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Gerwig is fantastic, and her lack of artifice/guile really made the character enjoyable to watch. She was also excellent in Greenberg, but truly shines in this film....Not sure if it's my favorite NB film, but it's definitely up there.

Excellent b&w cinematography, and I definitely saw the French New Wave homages, specifically of Truffaut's films - not only Jules & Jim, but the running through the streets reminded me a lot of The 400 Blows.

Frances also strongly reminded me of the character Delphine in the excellent French film Summer/The Green Ray (Eric Rohmer, 1986). Not only are the two characters in similar situations, but the dinner table scene as Frances keeps making awkward comments & was met by blank stares reminded me a lot of the similar lunch scene in Summer when Delphine was awkwardly justifying why she was a vegetarian to a table of meat-eaters...

IMHO, the movie was essentially about a character on the road to finding herself.

[Show spoiler]The deterioration of Frances & Sophie's extremely close friendship was both painful & poignant to watch, though it was an inevitable result of their growing independent of each other - or, rather Sophie becoming independent of Frances...

[Show spoiler]Re: the going to Paris on a whim sequence, it was quite foolish & irresponsible of Frances to do this - a last-minute plane ticket probably cost $1,500 - $2,000, and she definitely would end up deeply in debt as a result. I also know she was paying through the nose on her international phone call(s)....However, in defense of the character, I felt that she was just very needy & wanted to see her friends in Paris, even though the idea was impractical. It was ironic that she couldn't get in touch with them while there (though completely expected - after all, she was only there for two days).

[Show spoiler]I was impressed by the ending scenes when Frances finally moved to an apartment on her own & seemed like she was going somewhere career-wise. Though, I did find it somewhat unrealistic that she could afford the rent for a relatively nice NYC apartment by herself (her parents weren't helping her financially, and it didn't look like she had any roommates) on an administrative/secretarial salary. Those forum members who either live in NYC and/or are more familiar than I am with the rent situation there, please feel free to correct me here if I'm mistaken....

It's kinda like girls, but with a character arc. They're both basically about privileged millennials with a tenuous grip on reality, though. Frances Ha seems to love its main character while acknowledging she has her head way up her butt for most of the movie, unlike Girls, where most of the point is how awful the characters are and how they never seem to learn anything. I like both, but Frances Ha is definitely the lighter, more upbeat of the two while Girls can get tiresome after a while. I really liked Frances Ha even though Frances is the kind of obnoxious "manic pixie dream girl" character that usually makes me want to throw rocks at the screen.

Watched Days of Heaven. Good movie. Absolutely beautiful, looks like art, feels like an American classic. During the moment where Richard Gere has his gun pointed at Sam Shepard, I suddenly let out an accidental audible gasp . I have to laugh because I never do that. I felt like one of the girls in my viewings of either Divergent or The Fault in Our Stars in the theater.

And, the locust scene was incredible! An absolutely stunning visual feast of a sequence in film.

A big appeal of the movie is the easygoing mood and the warm, simple beauty of nature and the golden wheat fields at late in the summer afternoon. It reminds me of my road trips out west and it kind of makes me want to live in the country. Terrence Malick and the cinematographer did a tremendous job here, and he proves over and over to be a visual artist.

I don't think that's entirely fair. Frances seems to have a pretty good handle on reality right from the start. She understands bills, she knows money doesn't fall from the sky, she wants to be a dancer but even from the start you get the feeling that she knows she's a fairly mediocre talent.

One of the things I loved most about this movie was that coming of age in this particular context constituted embracing and coming to terms with familiar realities rather than becoming aware of them via some sort of contrived epiphany.

She also got huge points for never acting like the world owed her anything or was conspiring to hold her back.

That was very refreshing.

I absolutely love Jean Cocteau's movies. But ive been trying to get through the supplements on Orpheus for like two days now. There is something about the way he describes everything that just puts me to sleep. On the tour of the villa, him describing the frescos i literally wanted to die lol

Lone Star. Don't understand why that one isn't out already on Blu-ray. I still have my DVD and keep waiting for the upgrade.

Just finished watching George Washington for the first time. Wow, everything about the film was simply beautiful. It baffles me as to why David Gordon Green continuous to make uninspired comedies. He has a special gift in filmmaking, that a lot of people could only wish for!

Prince Avalanche was great, and I've heard good things about Joe...

I completely forgot about Prince Avalanche, I haven't seen it yet but I definitely need to check it out though. As far as Joe goes, any film I watch with Nicolas Cage, I have a real hard time buying into.

I recently blind bought and loved it - it did have that Malick feel to it, but it didn't feel like it was trying to copy or rip them off if that makes sense.

I can't wait to re watch was a superb film.
