I have no idea what kind of guy he is, but what's on film smacks of the feeling of self importance.

How many directors have the audacity to make a big movie about a big subject? You see a lot of big movies on small ideas but never like this. There are very few filmmakers who can go beyond a small movie on something big and make it so big, its just about too advanced for the typical person. I do find myself, that over time, I lose interest in a movie that talks about something so big that its intangible to grasp and understand. But just seeing someone actually undertake an epic project like this that is so big, is pretty admirable.

the whole "working on it since the 70's" is a bunch of crap. even art film directors have PR people pitching their upcoming work, I guess. it's like when a band talks about their upcoming albums and say, "it's the best thing we've ever done." please!

if he's been wanting to do it since the 70's, I'm sure that he was capable of finishing it within a reasonable amount of time "working on it since the 70's" says nothing about how much effort he has put into it or how potentially great it will be.

Lmao people calling Malick pretentious is hilarious. Offering films with a greater sense of purpose, works that require effort when viewing them, does not equate a director to being pretentious.

what "sense of purpose" is that?

..and what do you know about my taste in film that leads you to draw the conclusion that I have seen a film that "requires effort while viewing it (them)" and that has lead me to call him pretentious?

Okay, but self-important and pretentious aren't necessarily the same thing.

I never really get the feeling that Malick is trying to impress anyone or fancies himself the voice of his generation or anything along those lines. He doesn't seem to pander or curry favor and he's certainly not an attention wh*re.

Even if he takes himself terribly seriously (and I don't know whether he does) does he really make his films out to be more than they are? Do his films pretend to be something they're not?

'Q' has been in development since then... That's where Tree of Life came from - and if you know Malick he never rushes a film, excluding To The Wonder (well not rushed but was development a lot quicker then he normally does).

Well' the few clips shown at Canne got people very excited :/ so we will soon see lol I have faith in him

If Malick is self-important, is that why he shuns interviews and is a very private person? Maybe he has an insecurity of looking weak in public or avoids interviews because he's vulnerable at the mercy of the interviewee. I would thus call Malick a "control freak" in that regard.

Makes me want more of his earlier work to be released by Criterion.
It's a very good film, especially for a first feature.

Have you seen The Report included with Certified Copy? I didn't really enjoy it as much as his other films, but I still think it's nice to see more Kiarostami - regardless of what it may be.

Malick creates films that are experiences. He is able to bring out the beauty of the world and life, better than any other living director. There is no denying while you're watching a film of his, you're watching something that you've never seen before.

I watched La Cage aux folles. I'll admit I wasn't particularly looking forward to it, but I got into it and it was fun and heartfelt, and very funny in the last act. Definitely give this film a watch, it just might win you over.

I love it - I found it better then The Birdcage, but then again I found the casting really annoying and just felt so forced.

Really enjoyed this film though

I haven't. I'll watch it soon.

I'd like for them to release more of his films revolved around children. I've heard very good things about Where Is the Friend's Home?.

I don't see the need for Malick to make public appearances/interviews. He puts himself out already with The Tree of Life and To the Wonder. From what little we know about the man, it isn't hard to conclude that these two films are autobiographical.

Never seen The Birdcage, but I've heard it doesn't match up to this one.

Agreed. They both have many autobiographical aspects, from Malick's deceased brother to a past lover.

I haven't been on Hulu for a very long time, and I had forgotten that they had Criterion films. Anyway, last night, I watch Picnic at Hanging Rock. I was considering blind buying this one, but no am glad that I watched it on Hulu. It's a good film, but once is enough I think.

Really? I keep watching and going back, trying to find answers and secrets, even if there are none, it's still worth going back for just to see :-) but fair enough

It was just the opposite for me-Seeing it on Hulu convinced me to get it just in time for the sale. Two films I've seen there I didn't particularly care for were Vengeance is Mine and Overlord which I was considering prior to seeing them on Hulu Plus. It's a great tool for whittling down those maybe titles on your Criterion Wish List.
