I have heard a lot of good things about Pale Flowers, Hari Kiri and Au Revoir Les Enfants. A few things to consider:

- My favorite criterions that are dramas would be The Three Colors, Kid with a Bike, High and Low, Double Life of Veronique, Le Cercle Rouge.

- I really dislike the theater-esque acting found in many early Japanese flicks. That said I do like 7 Samurai but HATE Rashoman so do with that as you will.

- Would like to consider special features and specifically re-watchability as key factors rather then whether the film is ground breaking or has out of this world audio and video.

- I am open to buying 1, 2, or all 3 if the feedback is very good.
Au Revoir Les Enfants is a wonderful, yet very emotional film, regarding World War II. Children being forced to grow up faster than others due to the extreme hardships they had to face, the consequences that such minor things can ultimately have, and many more things are touched upon in the film.

I had high hopes when I watched Harakiri, as it seemed to be a great film, but I was letdown overall. The film is good in regards to its exploration of the feudal system at that period in time, as well as the corrupt officials in power, but I found it be a rather slow film. The story gets more interesting as the time goes by, but it's not something I would watch again.

Pale Flower is another film I was let down by. It just felt like a typical Japanese gangster film, or gangster film, in general, for that matter. It's difficult to quit a life of crime, especially when there's others you care about involved. I've been meaning to rewatch this film, as I hope I will like it more on a second watch.

Hey,

I just went to Barnes and Noble and purchased Royal Tanenbaums and Hard Day's Night. I haven't watched Hard Day's Night and hope its a good Blind Buy. I saw they had one copy left of Fish Tank and a movie called Beneath The Wave, which I'm told is fantastic. They didn't have any copies of Fat Girl. I was wondering if anyone had seen those three movies as well as Hard Day's Night. I'd love to know your opinion.

I'm gonna cheat.

Most emotionally-affecting Criterion (fiction): Friends of Eddie Coyle: This was my dad, and I can see it being me. Pretty tough for a guy to feel his vitality slip away.

Most emotionally-affecting Criterion (documentary): Shoah: I created this cheat so I could include this film. The systematic horror described in this film just defies comprehension, and that makes it even more affective.

Most emotionally-affecting film, period: Melancholia: For the first time, I understood what the clinically-depressed have to deal with. I never cry at movies, but this one.....

Fish Tank and A Hard Day's Night are excellent and some of my favorite films of all time.

Breaking the Waves is probably my favorite Lars Von Trier film, and honestly incredibly depressing and devastating. I'm not sure if it's for everybody, though.

Lastly, Fat Girl is something I wasn't a big fan of. The ending will stick with you for a long time and possibly forever, as it is incredibly shocking, in my opinion. I think it's safe to purchase if you like Antichrist, In the Realm of the Senses, and similar films - although I would place Fat Girl above those.

Well, my B&N half-price order finally arrived by UPS eight days after ordering (so much for member free "express" shipping), but everything was in good shape.

Now I just need to decide what to watch first tonight out of ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS, JUDEX, SLACKER, PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, L'ECLISSE, or HEARTS AND MINDS (the first three of the six titles were blind-buys, the last three I haven't seen in over two or three decades).

I'm actually leaning towards starting off with some of the bonus shorts on various discs and/or Richard Linklater's first feature IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO LEARN TO PLOW BY READING BOOKS, so I can save the main features to show when I've got friends over for my weekly screenings.

Anybody familiar with the bonus shorts/features on these Criterion releases?

From the still, I thought it is his video shelf at his home but when I played the video, I realized that he is shopping...The shelves are unlike B&N...what store is it? Which other store has separate section for criterions?

What Polaroid said. Criterion lets people who are working with them, come into the holy grail, that is the Criterion Closet. A room that very few have seen and everybody wants to go into.
