Don't know if anyone else has been struck with World Cup fever, but even if you haven't, maybe you will get a kick out of this like I do.

Did you know that one of the greatest character actors of all-time is also a German midfielder? If I wasn't already cheering for Germany, this would probably put me over the top.

(Criterion connection - M, The Man Who Knew Too Much )

So they give you a ton of t-shirts and posters from their films That would be a nice consolation

Came home to:

The Double Life Of Veronique
Topsy Turvey
Tokyo Story
and Jules and Jim

I've had EVERY dual format digipak come perfect condition, they are defiantly better quality then older digipaks.

Im not keen on the digipaks used for The Man Who Fell To Earth though, the go wonky.. I like the look of the cover on digipak but don't like slideyness :/

A second viewing of Sweet Smell of Success cemented the film as one of my all-time favorites. That dialogue just pops.

Yes. I believe there have been hints of the Apu Trilogy in the past from Criterion.

I think it's one of the top 5 scripts of all-time. I rank Judgment at Nuremberg as the best script of all-time. For SSOS, I think the writing is genius and is presented so well by the actors. It doesn't come across as purposely clever of forced.

For Judgment, I think the script is very eloquent and an incredible achievement to be able to present arguments regarding complicity in the Holocaust. Anyone else a fan of the film?

Watched Picnic at Hanging Rick last night and found it very interesting. A good film no doubt, and I have no problem about its lack of resolution. I'd love to hear people's theories about it; I've read multiple but I'm curious as to others' thoughts, especially since there is purposely no resolution and the clues seem to contrast.

Considering buying The Essential Jacques Demy set when it releases, but know absolutely nothing about the films. Are they a good blind buy?

Did you know that there is an -initially unpublished - last chapter to the book that explains the mystery?

PAHC is a superb film; seen this several times over the years & it never fails to amaze & disturb me.

First of all, I don't think the film is based on an actual event, as is claimed at the beginning. Not that this should matter, but if it had been based on an actual event that would have made it more disturbing.

Re: the mystery behind the dissapearance
[Show spoiler]of the young women from the school in the cliffs, IMHO there is no real clue as to what happened here. If they perished somewhere on the rocks or gotten lost, they eventually should have been able to find them.....unless they somehow all went into some kind of crevice/opening in the cliff face/rocks & dissapeared down there. The other plausible possibility seems to be that they all ran off somwwhere, but if so, where?! And, why?! Kidnapping is a possiblity, but if so how did the kidnappers get them off of the cliff face without being seen? There were no helicopters during this time....

I'm thankful that this chapter was not included in the book that comes with the Criterion disc. The chapter is an interesting read, but I think that the book is better off without it. (I'm not revealing any spoilers here.)

just know that in the set's most popular (best?) film, every line of dialogue is sung. there was a time in my life when that turned me off tremendously. I watched about 10 minutes and told myself, "there's no way I'm going to sit through this."

I hope my library gets blu-ray copies because I'd definitely like to give it another try (some 10 + years later), but consider yourself warned.

also Pro-B gave a 'not so good' review for the PQ for one of the other films in the sets. don't know if that sways your decision making process.

I can't speak for any films in the set other than Cherbourg and Donkey Skin, but the former is one of the best films ever. It may be the release I've been the most excited for ever.

Thanks, I do actually, but I've read it's essentially undisputed that it wasn't written by the author.

Thanks for the response. I think there are a few distinct clues, but they conflict with each other. I've read quite a bit in the film and it seems that it is not a true story, as no evidence was found of it occurring through newspapers and the like. However, apparently there was a somewhat similar event near that location around the same time period. Just what I've read, of course.

It gets a lot of love but I found it fairly disappointing to be honest.

In the Mood for Love is a great film if you're into WKW's other movies or movies in general that favour mood and feelings over a strong plot. Black Narcisuss is a safe buy IMO. Beautifully shot, terrifically acted and interesting story. It's a P&P classic for a reason. It's pretty accessible and very enjoyable.

It really depends on your tastes but I have nothing but praise for Diabolique, ITMFL and Black Narcissus. All 3 are great movies.
Very much agree regarding Wages. I get how it is influential but the ending is just so, so horribly cheesy, for me it destroys the whole film. I just cannot look past it.
