Well, right in that vein. lol

With Everyone Buying so many Criterions I figured I'd ask...

If anyone doesn't want/is just going to throw away the Director's Signature Stickers for the following Titles, I'd love to have them:

Michael Mann - "Thief"
Martin Scorsese - "The Last Temptation of Christ"
David Fincher - "The Game"
Christopher Nolan - "Following"
Roman Polanski - "Rosemary's Baby"
Ingmar Bergman - "Smilies of A Summer Night"
Alain Resnais - "Last Year at Marienbad"(highly unlikely)

If you have or are going to be getting any of these during this current B&N Sale, and you don't want them/are just gonna trash em with the plastic, Please PM me... I can send a Paypal Payment to cover the Cost of the Stamp & Envelope.

Thanks.

I would love to see Odd Man Out released as a Criterion title.

I agree about WOF vs Sorcerer. I didn't know about Sorcerer when I first saw Wages. So naturally, being a pretty big fan of Friedkin, when I found out that a remake/film-with-the-same-source-material existed and was going to be released on Blu-ray, I had to check that out as well. Although I enjoyed it quite a bit, I would agree that Wages did a better job with the exposition and establishing the characters.

Thanks for mentioning Melancholia. Sometimes I feel like I must be living in a cave because I never heard of it before. After seeing your comment, I did a little Googling to find out more about it. I decided to give it a try. Just ordered it.

Eraserhead has been updated. All the shorts are a 2K restoration. And looks like they are including a booklet after all!

I saw Paris, Texas last night which was a recent blind buy. My hunch was correct and the nearly unanimous sentiment of community members who post on this thread have it right - this is beautiful film!!

I had a 'take' on the film shortly after the credits rolled, but after giving it a bit more thought, I'm not sure I had it right. The fact that the material is presented in such a way that leaves it open for interpretation is one of the greater attributes of the film.

Did anyone else consider the possibility that
[Show spoiler]Travis is an angel and that he died in the fire? As I type this now and give it some more thought it is beginning to seem more far-fetched as the theory is dependent on the idea that the Natassja Kinski character set the trailer on fire. She is perhaps feeling a great deal of guilt and that is why she cannot be around Hunter as he is a reminder of Travis. By coming to find her and through the frank conversations he has with her, he acknowledges that he was an equally guilty party in the failure of the relationship.

When he mentions on the recording that he leaves for Hunter that he is scared about where he is going (or what he has to do next - can't remember how it is worded,) is he perhaps afraid of moving on to the afterlife? And because he is an angel, he cannot be with Hunter or with both of them?

There is quite a bit of thematic material involving the universe, the big bang theory, space, and flying. In addition to that, there are at least a half dozen shots where Travis is gazing out over vast areas of land and, of course, the opening scenes in the Texas desert. Maybe Travis has come from another galaxy? Could that be why when we first him early in the film, he is wandering, mute, and sporting a disheveled appearance? He has to, perhaps, become re-acclimated to life on Earth.

All of this is a subjective interpretation that hinges upon the idea that the "fire" Travis tells about was meant literally. This morning, I considered the possibility that the "fire" is the metaphor and that it meant that s**t hit the fan too many times and he left. Maybe that is a better reading.

Anyway, the two scenes in which they converse through the window at the strip club are pure movie magic. Artfully done, yet entirely accessible.

..and a "fun fact" for anyone who cares, knows what I'm talking about, or hasn't already read it on wikipedia or imdb - I've heard the line where Nattasja Kinski says, "yep, I know that feeling" who knows how many times because it is sampled at the end of the Primal Scream song "Come Together" which is on the masterful album Screamadelica. Very cool!! Now I know where it came from.

Silent film frame rate causes this one to be interlaced.

I've always taken Paris, Texas at face value, but I like your interpretation a lot. This is one of my top five Criterion titles.

I also recognized the line from the Primal Scream song when I first saw the movie. That makes at least a couple of Criterion movies that tie in with glorious early 1990s alternative, because a line from Withnail and I is featured in a Ride song. "Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day."

Been in a big 1950s kick lately. Watched The Searchers earlier this week, and yesterday two by Nicholas Ray Johnny Guitar and Bigger Than Life. Cannot describe how much I love Joan Crawford in JG and the use of color! BTL is spectacular as well as an early critique of suburbia. I'm dying to have In a Lonely Place on blu-ray. Essential for fans of Ray and Bogart.

Also watched A Hard Day's Night this week. Long time coming since I've been a Beatles fan for many years, but I only found it mildly amusing. Kind fun seeing them show off being such goofy characters, but the old guy they meet on the train, Paul's "grandpa," was a real creeper. Not funny at all. The ending performance was the highlight. Loved the use of close ups on the band.

They don't have the Miramax featurettes on the disk, but Grandfather McCartney (who, yes, is an acquired taste ) was Wilfred Brambell, who was best known in 60's UK as the British analog of Fred Sanford on "Steptoe & Son."
The running gag about being "very clean" is considered to be an in-joke at the show's catchphrase: "You dirty old man!"
