Bay of Angels Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() Super release, great restoration ![]() ![]() I also wanted to recommend these two titles -- Cheaters, with beautiful Bulle Ogier, and 24 Hours in the Life of a Woman. Both equally stylish films about gambling and love. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pro-B |

They probably will...eventually. It's not likely to happen until current stocks of the DF format are depleted enough, though.

Just watched JUDEX (1963) for the first time. The transfer is simply beautiful. The film has some impressive sequences, most notably the masked ball scene with the detailed bird-head masks giving a surreal flavor to the proceedings. There are some lovely lyrical moments like the two villains carrying the girl through the woods and being stopped by dogs, the sequence of the girl floating down the river, and some others. The magician demonstrations also work nicely in the film's context.
That said, Franju seems to be going for a heartfelt homage to the classic original five-hour serial, summarizing the meat of the plot nicely, complete with iris shots and title cards introducing scenes. Unfortunately his straight dramatic approach, the obviously 1960s hairstyles, and the choice to keep the setting in the mid-1910s, causes the film to lack the playful fun and authentic period charm of the original. Francine Bergé looks almost as good as Musidora in a body stocking but plays the Diana Monti character with a seriousness that keeps the audience distanced from her, whereas Musidora's magnetic performance in the original not only rivets the viewers' eyes upon her but seduces them into wanting her to succeed at her nefarious schemes. Also the involvement of the little boy and the detective is drastically reduced in Franju's version and that was a major source of both humor and humanistic sentiment throughout the original. We get a hint of the detective's lighter side in his preoccupation with "Alice in Wonderland" when he's with the banker's little granddaughter, but he's far more comic in Feuillade's film. Franju's JUDEX is an admirable attempt to recapture classic 19th-century and early 20th-century melodrama with a 1960s visual sensibility. As a whole, however, it comes off more as an interesting curiosity than the engaging action melodrama that it seems to want to be. It might have worked better had Franju updated the plot to the 1960s or at least the 1950s, which would have relieved the anachronistic hair, makeup, and costumes (although perhaps that was intended to be part of his surrealistic magical approach). What it made me want to do most was to rewatch the entire 1917 serial (but I only looked at a random chapter afterwards tonight to refresh my memory). |

![]() My copy of The Double Life... came the other day so can't wait to crack into that, I love love love love Hanake's films, they are so devastating - really wish he would get some films in the collection. Not seen Certified Copy so will definitely look into that, have been eyeing it up though. Don't think I have seen any of this directors films actually... Lynch is superb, Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr, Inland Empire (even just the rabbit shorts) - they all deserve a place in the collection! I think Inland Empire was the funnest film to try understand and decipher, it has so many levels to it and it has incredible performances, Lara Dern was out of they world, she was so haunting and she did feel like different people throughout the film. I also really loved the digital look of the film, it added a documentary style feel to it and made it feel more raw and real in a way. Quote:

WOW.
I have had to stop The Double Life of Veronique. Not because its boring, crap or I didn't like it. It is SO powerful, the imagery and the music - I have NOT heard music used in film this well and emotionally - TTOL had an incredible score but I think this beats it! which is a HUGE achievement in my eyes, it even beats The Great Beauty, and dare I say Koyaanisqatsi's soundtrack! I really wasn't prepared of this and can't wait to get back into it, but had to stop to post this, the music is so powerful. I don't think Three Colours had this effect on me, but will definitely revisit soon to see if they do. But my god I have struck gold with this film. Lacrimosa from Tree of Life was favourite piece of music used and was so powerful and just incredible, same composer so yeah my respect and passion for this composer has just reach extraordinary levels!
