I had one of those theatres. It worked out well as I was able to see Life Itself without having to drive to Toronto.

Hm, I wonder if Life Itself would be up Criterion's alley?

Probably not as it's Magnolia owned.

It's one of the best documentaries ever made. It made me somehow love film even more.

I agree. Roger Ebert was my favorite critic and this documentary is a lovely homage to him and his influence on cinema.

I didn't at first realize it was the same "Colin McCabe", but I was quite surprised and happy to see he was included in the supplements on this disc, as he was a name I had seen while I was at my university studying film back in the turn of the century. Unfortunately, this deeply personal film by Terence Davies didn't really connect with me, but I did think the interview with Davies (from the South Bank show) and the McCabe interview were quite illuminating and engaging!
Re: The Long Day Closes -- I absolutely love this movie. I found a bad VHS dub online after Criterion announced it and was bowled over. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it and I'm sure I will watch it again and again. One of my very favorite Criterion releases. That said -- it's not for everyone. Davies isn't interested in telling a story as much as evoking childhood memories. His use of sound and picture is pretty singular and some people simply won't be into it so I wouldn't suggest a blind buy. But it's great, great filmmaking. And the commentary is terrific.

Those are both excellent points.

Hopefully the Magnolia release will have good special features.

I picked up quite a few this weekend:

Yojimbo/Sanjuro
In the Mood For Love
Three Outlaw Samurai
Cronos
When Horror Came to Shochiku(Eclipse)

I was looking for The Naked Kiss thanks to a recommendation from some posters here, but my B&N did not have it in stock, so I asked them to order it, along with Shock Corridor. I'll pick those up along with Scanners next weekend, and hope I have the restraint to leave it at those three.

So a fun question for everybody, what are the 5 Criterion films you'd like to see upgraded to BluRay the most? Here's my list:

1. Sword of Doom
2. Dead Ringers
3. Blood for Dracula
4. The Human Condition
5. Le Samourai

Wow, that was harder to narrow down than I thought.

I don't even like Dawn of the Dead very much, but I think it is deserved because of the pedigree alone.

October Guesslist:
The Brood
Midnight Cowboy
The Ninth Configuration
Sisters
The Vanishing

Hopscotch
Night Train to Munich
Thieves' Highway
Green for Danger

Don't have a 5th yet, but I did order 3 DVD's in the sale that should be here hopefully tomorrow. 1 of those might be #5. If his work holds up, I can see Suzuki's Youth of the Beast or Melville's Le Deuxičme Souffle occupying that 5th slot.

I loved Green for Danger, one of the funniest final lines I've seen in a movie. As for Youth of the Beast and Le Deuxieme Souffle, you should enjoy both of them if you're a fan of those directors.

If we're making wishlists for October, then I'll throw in a nomination for Jacques Tourneur's Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon. Since we're getting Out of the Past released from Warner Archive apparently in the near future, let's put another Tourneur film in the fold for good measure. Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon has a French Blu-ray release that is supposed to be pretty good, so I know that a high definition transfer is out there.

Of course, The Vanishing cannot be upgraded soon enough. I'm really looking forward to replacing my DVD.

If they upgrade that one I'll never ask for anything more.

This soundtrack is sublime. It really works well to set the mood of the film:

La Dolce Vita, Fellini
The Virgin Spring, Bergman

And these are titles that must be considered in the collection:

McCabe & Mrs. Miller
The Gospel According to St. Matthew
Symphonie Pastorale
Blow-Up -- I'd rather this one added before L'Avventura is upgraded
Raise the Red Lantern --OR-- Farewell, My Concubine --OR-- Huo Zhe (To Live) -- Chinese cinema
The Offence --OR-- The Hill (Sidney Lumet/Sean Connery collaboration)

And, as I argued earlier, a Kathryn Bigelow film: Near Dark, Zero Dark Thirty, or Strange Days

I'm watching Polanski's Macbeth through Amazon Instant Video right now (before I commit myself to the blind purchase) and I got a good kick out of seeing Playboy's own, Hugh Hefner, listed as the executive producer in the opening credits.
