Just thought of this as an idea for a Criterion horror addition... 1972's Private Parts, directed by Paul Bartel.

Personally, I didn't like it very much, but it has an arty '70s vibe about it that screams Criterion.

I just bought Eating Raoul during the sale, and loved it utterly. The "secret cinema" short film on there and the interviews with Bartel and Woronov got me really interested in seeing Private Parts, as well as Rock n Roll High School. They have such great chemistry in Raoul and Hollywood Boulevard. Their lamenting about the title Private Parts in the vintage interview was pretty funny too.

Eating Raoul is amazing. Rock n Roll High School is amazing. Private Parts... Not really.

I still have to see Hollywood Boulevard.

Check out Death Race 2000. It is fantastic. Also, check out Chopping Mall, as it features The Blands in a cameo.

Though they aren't on Blu-ray yet, Criterion also released Olivier's Hamlet and Henry V (in addition to the aforementioned Richard III).

If you want to count laserdiscs, they also released Forbidden Planet and West Side Story.

I'm really hoping for some more non-samurai Kurosawa films. It seemed like they were strongly hinting at Stray Dog / Drunken Angel a couple years ago, but I'm still waiting.

Don't have a 5th yet, but I did order 3 DVD's in the sale that should be here hopefully tomorrow. 1 of those might be #5. If his work holds up, I can see Suzuki's Youth of the Beast or Melville's Le Deuxième Souffle occupying that 5th slot.
Youth of the Beast on blu would prob make me tear up lol one of my favs. I also second Melville. Any Melville honestly.

This soundtrack is sublime. It really works well to set the mood of the film:

I can't say I wouldn't ask for anything more, my desire for L'avventura to be upgraded isn't too far behind, but it's my second favorite film ever (after Persona, which Criterion gracefully offered us this year), so I would be overwhelmed with joy.

Based on your list, it's weird to not see L'avventura listed. Have you just not seen it? If so, jump on that as soon as you can.

Which Crash? Charles Band, David Cronenberg, or the one with Sandra Bullock?

Davies isn't interested in telling a story as much as evoking childhood memories. His use of sound and picture is pretty singular and some people simply won't be into it so I wouldn't suggest a blind buy. But it's great, great filmmaking. And the commentary is terrific.
Let's just put it this way... its an acquired taste. You're right though about it being a risky blind-buy...glad I borrowed it from the library first.

Well, I purchased 3 more Criterions today from B&N!

If...
George Washington
The Freshman

What do all of these have in common? They're about adolescence and youth!

I paid an average of $16.32 a copy in conjunction with the 50% off sale (and 10% member discount and $5/50 coupon).

All 3 are blind-buys. I'm psyched to watch them.

Eating Raoul is hilarious - one of the funniest films I've ever seen. I like cheesy '80's flicks anyway, and this was definitely one of the best "dark comedies" from that decade. I saw this for the first time circa 2004-ish, on the original DVD. The Criterion Disk is a huge improvement in PQ, obviously...

For what it's worth, Woronov & Bartel (Raoul) were also in another '80's cult cult comedy, Night of the Comet (1984); this was released to Blu last Fall (not on the Criterion label, though).

I think Le Samourai may be one that will be years in the making yet, just because people want it so bad.

Then again Criterion has been pretty on point this year with pleasing fans.

I want Criterion to release these films:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Kelly-Re...dp/B00LC02ISY/

Except leave out Meek's Cutoff, it was pretty terrible.

[Show spoiler]

Also October would be a great month for Silence of the Lambs to come back into the collection. Ohhh or Pans Labyrinth (making a debut in the collection of course).

The only Criterion film I still want that I'm waiting for the inevitable Blu ray release is The Virgin Spring.

I was holding off on Picnic at Hanging Rock, so that paid off.

I'm not one to upgrade based on financial reasons, but I would absolutely buy a Blu of Carnival of Souls.
