Sorry that this is not a Criterion related post, but after doing a search, it looks like the Criterion thread is where Melancholia has been discussed the most.

I received my bluray in the mail today. I bought it off of ebay for a really good price. Now I know why the price was so good and why nobody else jumped on the deal before me ... it looks like it's a bilingual bluray ... not the US version that I was expecting to see. I popped it in to make sure it would play in my player. After a quick scan, it looks great (special features too)!

I guess the reason I started writing here is because I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to bilingual blurays, and wondered if I should be concerned about some kind of inferior transfer (or something like that).

Here is a quick question that is more general but pertains to the Blow Out CC blu ray that I just bought. So before watching a movie I have never seen before (or really any movie in general) I like to read the AQ and PQ reviews here to see what I am in for.

Before I watched Blow Out last night I was reading up on it and for fun thought I would read up on the Arrow release to see what was difference (since it had a different rating than the CC one) was. Well when you click on the UK Arrow steelbook here and go to BD review it just throws you over the US CC review that was done.

So my question is why does this happen? Did Arrow just use CC remaster and call it a day or is there another reason this happens because I notice this a lot with UK blu ray reviews in this database and it is throwing me off.

We can move this to a better section is this is a bad place to ask this.

The steelbox contains the same transfer as the previous Arrow release. Any subsequent change in packaging, special editions, or things of that sort are (I'm hesitant to say always because I'm sure there are exceptions) are not reviewed. It says that 'no review is available for this release' and then lists other releases for the same film. The third choice given for Blow Out is Pro-B's review of the Arrow release. That was the first edition (if you will) release.

Hope that isn't confusing.

Gotcha, so since in most cases since a steelbook just has a previous released disc inside (almost always never do we get a new remaster ) I need to be looking for the previous releases review from the same studio.

Thanks and makes sense.

iScottie,
Not that it has a chance of coming to Criterion (that's my "keep it on topic, Criterion-related" bit), but I wanted to know if you went to Cable Car to see Alejandro Jodorowsky's new film, The Dance of Reality, yet? I went Friday night, and it was easily my favorite film that I've seen this year! I had never seen so many people in there, either. I highly recommend everyone go see it!

Are you in Canada by any chance? Lots of releases here are bilingual. I have bought a few from Amazon.ca and eBay.ca that have the exact same content as the US version, just bilingual packaging and menu etc.

A little late, but my five most wanted Blu Ray upgrades:

1. My Dinner with Andre (PLEASE!)
2. Maurice (will never happen)
3. The Passion of Joan of Arc (preferably with more extras, kind of barebones)
4. Chasing Amy (existing BR sucks)
5. My Own Private Idaho (plz)

Bonus: The Red Balloon (would look gorgeous), Downhill Racer (plz).

I know it's playing, but I haven't seen it yet! I'll probably just end up renting it when it comes out in September. Also, I more than likely won't be going to Cable Car again until Boyhood is released in a couple of weeks.

Regarding the full house - when I went to the first showing of Blue is the Warmest Color there, there were people standing. It was nuts.

The only reason that current BD is out is because Criterion denied Kevin Smith's plead for them to let him do a Chasing Amy X set like he did with Clerks & Mallrats.

Bergman was born on this day in 1918. Would be kind of cool if they announced something like Hour of the Wolf tomorrow.

Thank you very much for the response. I was just about to delete my post because I'm not sure it belongs in this thread. But anyway, since you responded.........

No, I'm not in Canada, although some people think I live there because of my "Wiscaaahnsin" accent ... I'm in the US. You're right in that the bluray is indeed Canadian. I just now stumbled across it on blu-ray.com:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Melan...Blu-ray/37126/

No worries. It's all good.

I think Downhill Racer's alright but it's really a film that screams for a BD release, isn't it? Utterly gorgeous from beginning to end.

Strange Days is an excellent, underrated '90's sci-fi flick that tapped into the interest in virtual reality; IMHO it doesn't seem dated even when watching it now, but instead has a somewhat retro feel (it took place in the late '90's, on the verge of Y2K); it's also got elements of a noir detective story, which I find interesting as well.

Unfortunately, IIRC the only SD DVD out there is non-anamorphic. This would be a great choice for a Criterion Blu, though they typically don't do sci-fi films...

Criterion has done a fair number of science fiction films.

Two years ago, when Rosemary's Baby was announced as an October 2012 Halloween release, I posted a message on this site stating that I would love it if Criterion Collection released Don't Look Now for October 2013. As you know, last year CC announced I Married a Witch and The Uninvited.

With rumors swirling about a Don't Look Now release announcement for tomorrow, I am on pins and needles.

Yeah, there are a few sci-fi films in there. Just knowing that this would mean a Kathryn Bigelow movie entered the Criterion Collection and had the best presentation possible would be amazing, if it's possible. Clearly Hurt Locker will never happen, but Strange Days or Near Dark or Zero Dark Thirty would be fantastic additions. I still have to see Blue Steel. Interesting thing about Strange Days is that its many flaws reveal a clash of cinema auteurs: Bigelow and James Cameron. Their differing visions and approaches make Strange Days so fascinating.

That would be amazing. The atmosphere of this film makes me . (I have never used that smiley before but it is the only one that describes this.)
