The Masters of Cinema Collection will almost certainly be the reason I eventually go region-free.

At $650 it really doesn't sound like a very good deal.

Price wasn't a part of the question.

Default Spartacus (again)

What happened to my yesterday's post? I was asking if anybody knows about a potential release of Spartacus (Criterion Collection) on Blu-ray?

Mods probably went on another overzealous purge of posts. Happens quite a bit.

Hehe... It's great to see the MoC love...but I think that the love should be shared on the MoC thread, not the Criterion thread.

I don't think the MoC thread gets enough love due to its UK placement so I don't see any issue with occasionally throwing them a bone, especially since titles sometimes overlap and they basically are providing the same type of product. Plus, a lot of Criterion supporters are unaware of the MoC series so its just helping out fellow film lovers.

Honestly, I think the MoC thread should be stickied in this sub heading. While I understand the splits are by nation its a bit silly to have to go to the UK branch of the forum when really they fit in right here and would benefit greatly from the exposure that they lack from being in the UK portion of the site.

I answered your question yesterday.

Not gonna happen on Criterion. I believe you're only option is gonna be the recently released Universal blu-ray.

Just curious if anyone has the AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa set? And if so what kind of quality are the films and box set? Just wondering if it's worth buying should I see it at a decent price.

You're right, it probably should be stickied. I honestly didn't know there was one till now.

Criterion has definitely spoiled me as on movies. I've actuall bought as many (or more) DVDs' lately as I have Blu-ray. I did just purchase MoC's Une Femme Mariee on blu, but I also added Jules and Jim and Made in the USA from Criterion. Currently I'm 2/3 of the way through Rossellini's .War Trilogy.

I've also become a fan of Andrei Tarkovsky. Watched and loved Andrei Rublev, Stalker, and waiting on Solaris.

So far I have resisted buying and DVDs for a few years now, even Ctierion DVD. I'm always afraid I'll buy something just to have it come out on Blu in the future. I do plan on buying some Eclipse sets fairly soon though since I doubt those will ever come to Blu.

Like Chad, I am reluctant to buy any DVD's, since the Blu-ray version may pop up not long after I make a purchase. I am holding off on "Throne of Blood," and "Rashomon" for that very reason.

I used to feel the same way when I started out on blu. I've come to realize (for me personally) that the movie is more important than the format. I won't be buying your average movie on DVD, but the classics are worth owning and enjoying - blu or no blu.

These days I get my Criterion DVDs on ebay used, usually around $10-15. If they get released on blu-ray not a huge deal.

if you can swing the boxset for less than $220 (use the deepdiscountdvd coupon save25) or less than $200 it's a great deal!

if you need a review go here:
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews3/kurosawa.html

i got both the boxset and 16 individual releases and the other 6 missing from the boxset movies.

just beware that the AK25 is MOVIE only, NO BONUS features or extra discs WHATSOEVER. they have a book, but that's it.

as for the PQ, most are the newer prints and anamorphic utilizing the full resolutions (both 1.3 and wide). the only film that is different is 7 samurai. the most recent 3 disc release spread the film across 2 DVDs which gives it more bitrate. but here in the boxset it's squeezed down into 1 disc only and fills the frame whereas the 3disc set zooms out a bit to accomodate for overscan.
