The best month yet?

La Dolce Vita on Criterion finally! The Tati box is going to be great. I almost feel bad for the guy that bought my copy of Playtime last week for $50 on eBay.

The funny thing is that I love the cover art for Criterion DVD of The Vanishing, and I posted a couple of times in this thread that I was hoping that Criterion would use the same artwork for the upgrade.

I fell head over heels for the new cover when I saw it this afternoon, though. It's such a wonderfully appropriate way to convey the vibe of the movie, especially with regard to the final camera shots.

The Vanishing is primarily a movie about obsession, much in the same way that Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo is about obsession. This new cover art for The Vanishing perfectly captures that desperation of having a fleeting glimpse at something, only to have it disperse and fade into the fog of our memory despite our grasping for it.

With these October Criterion announcements, plus today's announcements for Blu-ray releases of Desperately Seeking Susan and Krull, I'm convinced that the Blu-ray gods are launching a full-scale assault on my wallet.

I'll be adding some sweet Blu-rays to my collection, even if I eventually end up watching them inside a house where the refrigerator holds the roof up.

The Complete Jacques Tati, F For Fake, and La Dolce Vita are going to have to wait until the November Barnes & Noble sale, but they're all going on my shelf.

The Tati set will be the only one I own with the possibility of My Darling Clementine being added as well.

I hope the La Dolce Vita restoration print makes another tour this fall. That print is gorgeous.

I'm fine with my DVDs of F is for Fake and Vanishing, but the Tati box is of course wonderful news and Clementine a classic, so those will be definite upgrades.

The fact we always get a out-of-left-field upgrade like F For Fake always fills me with hope that the next month one of my most wanted titles will be announced with almost no warning.

(I mean, Z or Missing have to come eventually, right? Maybe Human Condition? Pretty please?)

Generally very good month regardless.

Will pick up The Vanishing and possibly La Dolce Vita, depending on how much I like 8 1/2.

IMO, they really dropped the ball not announcing The Brood for October. Oh well, just another reason not to trust "inside sources."

Why is everyone under the assumption that they release a slew of horror movies in October? They released a few last year but it doesn't seem to be a trend or anything.

I don't buy every Criterion, I don't buy anything I won't get value out of. Can someone explain to me why that is so bad?

The Vanishing is the only must buy for me. I've been excited to watch that one for awhile and held off on buying the DVD. Not a big fan of the artwork, I'd rather have actual art than an optical illusion but that's just me. Liked the simple, silently terrifying, evocative art of the DVD more.

La Dolce Vita....maybe. The premise is intriguing and that artwork is fantastic. But I didn't care for 8 1/2, though I've been wanting to revisit it.

The others, not too interested but also don't know enough about them. Would have to look into them. I'm not familiar with Tati.

Seems like a solid slate for people, but I too am disappointed, not just at the lack of horror, but any of the other high profile hinted at titles as well. I swear Criterion must look through these threads and purposely not release the most wanted titles LOL

When they release Midnight Cowboy (hurry up) no doubt the rest of that months titles will be ones I want or will be interested in, make up for all my lean months

It's not, I was just noting (with mild amusement), that a similar exchange occurs, like clockwork, after each monthly release announcement, with one person stating their lack of interest in the entire lineup and then another poster quickly expressing amazement at said stance. It wouldn't really be 'Criterion Announcement Time' around here without such an exchange!

It's an odd double standard. People are allowed to say I LOVE IT OMG! But when someone says "Meh, nothing for me" people act surprised. With such a diverse catalog it's to be expected that not every month holds something for everyone.

8 1/2 isn't really similar to other Fellini titles. Its definitely more surreal than most. I wouldn't base how much you'd like La Dolce Vita off watching it.
