Ha. They must have gotten more complaints than we thought from those releases.

I think even stores probably hated them. It's not just about the additional space when we get them home, think about the space they take up in the warehouse, or at Barnes and Noble - and how they are sure to get beat up after spending awhile on the shelves.

I have a couple already, but I'm definitely holding off on the rest.

Actually, I'll probably sell the ones I already have since I'm in the process of trimming my overall blu collection anyway.

Whereas now I'm prioritizing them as I'd never be able to bring myself to buy a title that has less content for the same price!

Ahh, I was planning to buy Tess when I picked up Insomnia next week, now I'm doubting myself.

Or you could wait until the next sale. Or the next sale. Or the next sale. Or the next sale. Or the next sale.

[Show spoiler]Or maybe even the next sale.

Just a thought.

By less content I assume you mean a DVD with identical extras, as no actual extra features are exclusive to the DVDs.

Just to be clear, Midnight Cowboy is only borderline with regard to whether the existing MGM release would make a Criterion release redundant.

There's absolutely no question the film itself would make an excellent addition. It's a great film, it's from an important filmmaking era, it was surrounded by interesting controversy and in addition to being a great film it's an awesome movie to boot.

Just a thought.
A thought I don't understand the rationale of. Why would I wait? They're not going to get any cheaper (potential coupon couplings aside), and I don't see much long-term viability for B and N.

If you want them in single releases, you can wait and see if single releases come along later. Like you said, they're not going to get any cheaper and if B&N were to close, you'd likely have warning signs well enough in advance.

But if you feel the need that must have every release right now, you could buy now and sell them off later if single releases come along (which there may not be much of a market for but that's hard to tell).

Or you could flip a coin.

I'm getting the impression that you're attempting to mock me, though I'm not exactly sure why or how. It seems like a perfectly reasonable query/thought to me. I guess typing 'Wait until the next sale' six times in a row was supposed to be clever snark of some kind. Oh well. You 'win'.

I just saw the first film in the World Cinema Project set and I couldn't be happier that I put down good money for it. I have a feeling that this is going to be one rewarding week.

Well, two extra discs that can be played in practically any home in the country is extra content to me...

The "surprise" you refer to is, in most respects, an actual surprise. I think we all acknowledge that different people have different tastes, and not everyone is going to like the same things we do. But why is it bad to express surprise that films we love seem not to get other people excited?

Sure, I understand that there are people who aren't interested in My Darling Clementine, but that doesn't stop me from saying "What? Are you insane?!" when someone expresses that lack of interest.
To me it seems ort of nonsensical at best and arrogant at worst (You don't share MY taste? How dare you) to be "surprised" at a stranger's lack of enthusiasm/disdain for a film you happen to dig. Obviously no given thing is for everyone, so it seems an odd reaction outside the context of familiarity. I might be surprised to learn that a friend whose taste generally aligns with mine doesn't share my affinity for Clean, Shaven, but what difference should it make to me if a random person on the internet doesn't? It's to be expected. It just strikes me as a bizarre reaction.

What set of blu-ray releases would top this month for you?
I don't even know haha. I'm assuming something like this.

L'Avventura
Bicycle Thieves
Carnival Of Souls
Don't Look Now
The Virgin Spring

Any Akira Kurosawa upgrade
Any Charlie Chaplin film
Any Ingmar Bergman upgrade
Any Wong Kar Wai film
Any Yasujiro Ozu upgrade

Default Picnic at Hanging Rock

I just received my copy of Picnic at Hanging Rock. I've never seen it. I was surprised to find a paperback of the novel included in the package and I'm wondering if I should read the book before watching the film. What do you think?

Just put The Vanishing in my dvd queue, and may do the same for Tati's films. Still haven't seen one yet.

Otherwise I like My Darling Clementine. Don't think I need to own it tho, and like most Fellini I wasn't crazy about La Dolce Vita. :/

Since you are doing better with your wishlist than I am with mine, how about using some of these:

Gallipoli
The Grey Fox
The Day of the Jackal
Tender Mercies
The Year of Living Dangerously
Mountains of the Moon

Of course, I can think of over a dozen Criterion upgrades also.

And I agree completely with your choice of Lone Star. Need that one on blu now.

But it's a very common, and very human, reaction, whether or not you think it bizarre.

Generally very good month regardless.

I feel the same way! Sometimes I think I must be the only person hoping for an upgrade of BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET. I love that movie!!
